Chapter Two

1215 Words
Selene’s POV As I made my grand entrance into the mating ceremony with hundreds of eyes watching me, the last conversation between me and Lilah played in my head. I cannot do this, Lilah. I will not.” “You can, Rina. If you don't, I am going to escape anyway and that would be bad for all of us. “Is that a threat?” “No, Rina. You are a better fit for the Lycan King than I am. It's very simple. Pretend to be me, take my place and become his Luna. “And what if he finds out?” “He won't. No one would. We have the same face and body. You are my identical twin sister, Rina. No one can tell the difference between us. “I don't think this is a good idea, Isabelle…” “Do it or I will escape.” You really are selfish, aren't you? Do you even think about the consequences of your actions before you do them? I have spent all the years of my life cleaning after your mess and looking like a bad one. I will not do that anymore. “Then, we all die.” I noticed how my mother froze in her seat as she watched me walk towards the altar. There was a shocked look of recognition written in her eyes. If there was one person I knew that would decipher my true identity really quickly, it was my mother. She had given birth to Isabelle and me and had raised us for the past twenty-two years of our lives. So, there was absolutely no way that she wouldn't have been able to tell the difference between us at first glance. What the hell are you doing, Selene? Where is your sister? My mother's panicked voice echoed in my head as she connected to me through our mind link. You have to calm down, mother. I'll talk to you after the ceremony is over.” “No!” My mother screamed in my head and from where she was seated, her eyes looked wide and scared. “Where is Isabelle and why are you dressed as the Lycan's bride instead of her?!” She ran away. I am forced to do this to save our necks. From the side of my eyes, I could see how her shoulder dropped from the bombshell that I had just dropped. With a deep breath, I turned off the mind link and focused ahead. Once I arrived at the altar, my eyes searched around me for any signs of the Lycan King, but he was nowhere to be seen. I frowned at myself, slightly annoyed that the Lycan King would be late for his own mating ceremony. Not that I cared. “The Lycan King won't be able to make it.” The one hundred-year-old but middle-aged looking wolf witch, Lilith, informed me in a whisper. “He sends words to conduct the ceremony without him.” I looked at Lilith square in the face and a feeling of anger brewing inside of me. “Is this some sort of joke?” “Pardon?” Lilith looked taken aback by my reply. In our pack, it was considered blasphemy to disagree or express distaste over the Lycan King’s decision. But I did not care the least. It was hard to tolerate this embarrassment and his level of arrogance and insolence. I squared my shoulders and stared at Lilith, dead in the eyes. I would not continue with this if the Lycan King weren't here. Surely, you do not expect me to get mated with my own self, do you? “There is a way to get the mating ceremony done without the Lycan King.” Lilith found her words again. “His Lycan ring.” I bit my tongue as the rage in me threatened to consume my entire being. “He is just as self-absorbed and heartless as they say he is.” Lilith sighed and shook her head at me. You really are a feisty one, aren't you? Luther seems to have met with his match. Sighing deeply in surrender, I let Lilith commence with the ceremony. And as I watched her tie the red matte ribbon around my arm, connecting the other end to the red ruby Lycan ring, my thoughts traveled to Isabelle and I wondered how far she could've gone now. We had had the help of a loyal servant, sneaking Isabelle out of the house and away from the eyes of everyone else. There was a car waiting for us in the woods at the back of our house and as Isabelle entered the car, she held my hand and her eyes softened as she gave me an apologetic look. “I'm sorry, Rina…” I don't want to hear any of your apologies, Isabelle. Not from someone who would rather save herself instead of her own family. “Rina…” Goodbye, Lilah. I have a mating ceremony to catch up with. ……. After the mating ceremony, my mother pulled me away from the sight of the public as I made to enter the dark limousine that was waiting to drive me to my new home. To the Lycan King. “What the hell is going on?!” My mother flared at me after she glanced around us to be sure that no one else was watching. “What do you mean Isabelle has escaped?” “She eloped with her secret boyfriend,” I answered without batting an eye. “Your perfect daughter didn't stop for a second to think about the fact that her rash action could get us all killed.” I could see my mother break with every word that I spoke, but I struggled to compose myself and not let my own weakness show. One of us had to be strong for the other. If I hadn't done this, the entire pack would have found out about Isabelle's disappearance, and you know what that would have meant for us. So, forgive me for pretending to be my sister, mother. I just had to do that. “Oh, Selene.” The tears in my mother's eyes fell to her cheeks and she pulled me into a hug. The sweet scent of her lavender body mist wafted into my nose and I tried to remember the last time that she had hugged me like this but I couldn't recall. I am so sorry. I am so sorry you had to take on something you were never prepared for. My cheeks burned, and my body softened as I remained in my mother's arms, but a few seconds later, I pulled away from her and slipped back my tough demeanor. “I have to go, mother.” I said to her, “I'll see you around.” Without another word, I turned on my heels and headed back to the limousine. The chauffeur opened the car door upon seeing me and I entered the car. As the limousine started, I stared out the window and watched my mother's sullen face. Just like I had thought, this story was no Beauty and the Beast fairytale, for I was going to be Lycan Luther's worst nightmare.
