Sophie’s POV
The drive to my parents’ house was very quiet.
Nathan held the steering wheel tightly.
Every few minutes, he looked at me like he wanted to say something.
I just kept looking out the window.
My mind was full of thoughts.
The man I had started trusting was the same man who came into my family’s life to destroy
everything.
How could that be?
How could someone who had been so kind to me also be the person who wanted to ruin my
family?
When we got to my parents’ house, everyone was already there.
My parents were sitting on the sofa.
They both looked tired and worried.
Michael stood near the window with his arms crossed.
Luke and Anita were sitting at the table.
They looked nervous.
Nobody said anything when Nathan and I walked in.
The room felt strange.
Almost like someone had died.
My dad slowly stood up.
Sit down. Both of you. We need to talk.
I sat on the edge of the chair.
Nathan sat beside me.
Our knees almost touched, but he didn’t hold my hand.
He just leaned forward and looked at the floor.
My dad took a deep breath.
Before you were born, Nathan’s father and I built Luckwood Tech together.
I looked at him.
We were best friends,
Dad continued.
We trusted each other. Then something happened.
He paused.
A lot of money went missing from the company.
I frowned.
His father thought I took it.
Nathan looked up.
They fought,
Dad said.
They stopped talking and went their separate ways.
Nathan’s father never got over it. He died believing that I had betrayed him.
I looked at Nathan.
And you came here to finish what your father started.
Nathan didn’t deny it.
I did.
His voice was quiet.
I came here with one plan.
I wanted to destroy Luckwood Tech. I wanted to ruin your family and make you pay for what I
believed happened to my father.
He looked at me.
I spent months learning everything about the company.
I knew its problems. I knew where it was weak.
“Then I met you.
He paused for a moment.
I walked into that boardroom ready to fight your family.
But then I saw you.
You were standing there arguing with my lawyers and refusing to back down.
I tried to hate you.
He gave a small shake of his head.
I really tried.
But the more I saw you, the harder it became.
I fell for you, Sophie.
My heart hurt.
I never planned for that.
I never thought I would care about you.
But I did.
He looked down.
And I knew I couldn’t destroy your family anymore.
So I changed my plan.
I stared at him.
“So the court case was a lie?”
“The beginning was.
”
He looked into my eyes.
“But after I met you, my feelings were real.
”
Michael suddenly stepped forward.
“And what about this?”
He held up his phone.
A message was on the screen.
It was from Cam Phillip.
It had been sent to Nathan two days before our wedding.
Everything is set. Once you marry her, Luckwood Tech is yours completely. The deal is done.
My stomach dropped.
“If you really changed your mind, then why was Cam sending you this?”
Nathan’s face changed.
“Because Cam was doing something behind my back.
”
Michael frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“Cam had his own plan.
”
Nathan sat back.
“He was making the company weaker so he could take it for himself.
”
“And you expect us to believe that?”
“I fired him the next morning.
”
Nathan looked at me.
“I wanted to tell you everything.
”
“But your parents had already agreed to the marriage.
”
“If I stopped everything then, Luckwood Tech would have been finished.
”
I didn’t know what to think anymore.
Everything was too much.
I stood up.
“I need some air.
”
“Sophie.
”
“I just need to think.
”
I left the room before anyone could stop me.
I went upstairs to my old bedroom.
I closed the door and leaned against it.
Then I started crying.
I quickly wiped my face.
I hated crying.
Especially because of him.
A few minutes later, the door opened.
I knew who it was before I even turned around.
Nathan.
“Get out,
” I whispered.
He stayed where he was.
“Sophie.
”
“Please.
”
My voice broke.
“I can’t think when you’re here.
”
He stayed quiet for a moment.
“I’m not going to force you to talk to me.
”
I looked at him.
“But I don’t want to leave you alone while you’re hurting.
”
I looked away.
“I don’t know what to believe.
”
“I know.
”
He slowly walked closer.
“I’m sorry.
”
I looked at him.
“You should have told me.
”
“I know.
”
“You should have trusted me.
”
“I know.
”
Tears filled my eyes again.
“I hate that you made me feel like I knew you.
”
His face fell.
“You did know me.
”
“Did I?”
He didn’t answer right away.
Then he said,
“Not all of me.
”
I looked down.
Neither of us spoke for a while.
Then he opened his arms.
He didn’t come closer.
He just waited.
I stood there for a few seconds.
Then I walked into his arms.
The moment he held me, I started crying again.
I cried against his chest while he held me.
“I’m sorry,
” he whispered.
“I’m really sorry, Sophie.
”
I closed my eyes.
For once, I didn’t push him away.
I just let myself cry.
“I want to believe you,
” I whispered.
“You can take your time.
”
“I don’t know if I can forgive you.
”
“You don’t have to forgive me right now.
”
I looked up at him.
“But I’ll prove to you that my feelings are real.
”
I didn’t say anything.
I wasn’t ready.
But I didn’t walk away either.
We stayed there for a while.
Neither of us knew what would happen next.
Later, we sat quietly in my old bedroom.
We were both trying to understand everything that had happened.
For the first time since we got married, there was no arguing.
No shouting.
No pretending.
Just us.
“I need time, Nathan.
”
“I’ll give you time.
”
“All of this is too much.
”
“I know.
”
He looked at me.
“But I’m not going anywhere.
”
I looked down at my hands.
Part of me wanted to believe him.
But another part of me was scared.
That night, I stayed close to him, but I couldn’t sleep.
There were still too many questions.
Cam.
The missing money.
Our parents.
Nathan’s father.
The message.
And our marriage.
Something wasn’t right.
If Cam was really working alone, then who was behind everything?
And why did I feel like someone was watching us?
