It Only Gets Worse

Chapter 2: It Only Gets Worse Kira’s POV Three days earlier……. “Kira” I hear my name from a distance. I wonder who is calling me. I do not keep any friends in my neighborhood and I try to mind my business as much as I can. I do not turn to look back and I increase my pace fast enough but not noticeable to whoever is calling me. “Kira, Kira, can you not hear me?” the voice persisted. As the person keeps coming closer, I realize it is my best friend, Ava calling me. I know she will be mad if I tell her that I did not realize she was the one calling me. She would then talk about how she would immediately know I am around her just by my scent. Playfully, she would accuse me of not being a true friend. “Did you not hear me calling your name?” Ava questioned “Well, I was about….” “Do not try to lie to me Kira. You did not recognize my voice. I can……” “…. sense you are the one even if you are a 100 miles away from me”. I help her complete her sentence so she would not have to. She has been saying this line for as long as I can remember. “But what do you always think about?” Ava asked me. I guess this is a question that does not need my answer because she clearly knows what I think about. I tell her everything without keeping even the tiniest information from her. “I know a lot is happening right now, but you just need to stop worrying” Ava continued. I was right. She definitely knew what has been going through my mind she just felt the need to ask to sound more caring I guess. All of a sudden, she just starts smiling sheepishly at me. I am confused by how she has just switched from worrying about me to smiling like her gym crush had finally asked her out on a date. “Why are you smiling?” “Guess” she responded while still smiling wildly. The only time I had seen her smile to this extent was when her dad had promised to get her a car after college. She had gotten in a ghastly accident just a week later after her father had given her the car. Ever since then, she has developed a phobia for driving any automobile. I wonder what name this phobia would be called. “Seriously, you will not even try to guess? You can be impossible some times. Actually most times’’, she said trying to feign anger. My head is actually blank and I know Ava will not let me be unless I give her a million possible guesses. I decide I will keep saying anything just to get her to angrily say it. “You have a date to attend this weekend?” I answered. “Well…. I would have liked that. But that is not it” she responded. “Mira has finally given birth after her previous miscarriages” I tried to guess again. Mira is her pet dog who has had about five miscarriages in the past. She has gotten weak over the years. Ava had named her Mira after her brother, Michael and me, Kira. She took the first two letters of Michael’s name and the last two letters of my name. When I had asked her why she chose to do that, she said she saw both of our qualities in the dog. Michael was energetic and I was resilient. The dog had those two qualities. “Why do you have to remind me about Mira’s condition? She is going through a lot now and I feel really sad when I look at her” she stopped to wipe a tear that was beginning to drop on her cheek. “Kira, you are trying to change the subject of our discussion” she accused me. I did not plan to do that but that was a smart idea I will take note of in our future “guess it” discussions. “No, I was not trying to change the discussion” I try to sound as truthful as possible. “Anyways, I guess I will have to tell you then. You are very very bad at guessing” she says while holding my hand as we walk down to the path leading to my house. “Well it is regarding our last discussion” We said a lot of things when last we met. I cannot really figure which one she was talking about. “Which one in particular?” I asked. “Oh my goodness, do you ever remember anything at all? I told you I was going to check for available job vacancies that you can apply for” she responded. I remember us talking about job vacancies but I knew there would be no outcome from it. I had searched the whole of Northam and had not found any. I was either rejected, ignored or told that I was over qualified. At this point, I think I have given up. “I overheard the HR of my workplace saying they had a vacant position they needed to fill up and I recommended you” Ava reveals. Ava has always been a supportive friend right from day one. I was so happy at this news that I hug her tightly and did not let go until she pinches my right arm. “So, what is the job description?” I try to ask amidst my excitement. “It is the job of a cleaner” Ava says with a low tone. While this was not the job I had been hoping for, I am grateful to Ava for helping me source for one. “It is okay Ava. I am perfectly fine with it. It will help sort some of my pending responsibilities” I said to express my appreciation. “Ok then, just arrive on Monday and you will be directed to the HR’s office”. She hugs me tight and bids me goodnight. I am not able to sleep at all as I am so happy that I will finally have a stable job to help my parents. I do not know why I have a good feeling about this job. I must do my best in impressing whoever would interview me. Present…… “Girl, did you pluck a four-leaf clover?” Ava asks me as we step out of Chester Incorporated. “What do you mean?” I ask. “Like seriously, what just happened there is completely normal to you?” “I know it is not normal but what do you expect me to do. I have been searching for a job and this shows up so I have no choice” I respond. “Are you not scared one bit?” Ava queries. “To be honest I am not scared. I am just wondering what he is trying to achieve with this move” I answer. “I am not trying to scare you with what I am about to tell you now but I just have to tell you”. Ava says. “Go on, say it” I reply. “His former P.A was sacked for reasons no one knows about. You know I am quite close to the HR. Even the HR does not know the reason which just makes everything more suspicious. No one has been sacked before without know nobody knowing the reasons behind it” Ava says with a low tone that showed she was scared for me. “So, you think he might do that to me?” I ask to be sure of what she meant. “Knowing Kevin Chester, nothing he does has ever been good, it only gets worse” Ava replies with a tone of finality.
