Chapter 5: This Is Not Normal Kira’s POV The clients are already seated. I looked around and saw an empty seat that the beginning of the room. I needed not to be told that the chair was reserved for Kevin Chester. I sit down on it and immediately I felt a sense of superiority. Like it was designed for me, Kira Mason. “Good morning Mr. White” I greeted the CEO of the company that was sitting right next to me. I had checked the internet for his name after I reasoned he could be in the meeting. All thanks to the document Kevin gave me showing the company and the project they wanted to contract to our company. “And you are Kevin’s representative right? Nice meeting you.” He held out his hand to shake mine. It was a construction project for a branch of his company. I did not want to waste much time and not show my nervousness as well. I passed the contract agreement to him immediately. “Miss, the payment is quite on the high side. What is special about this project that your company wants to make a huge profit from this” Mr. White says with a frown on his face. I know this is not how this man would have talked to Kevin if he was here. Since I was representing Kevin, I would put on that nasty attitude of his. Moreover my dad had once told me that when he negotiates with clients, he does not beg. He just straight up tells them what they get from working with him that other people cannot offer them. “Mr. White, I am sure you have searched the whole of Northam before deciding to contract your project to Chester Incorporated. Our company values integrity and most importantly the satisfaction and happiness of our clients. Our works speak for themselves. We do not need to put up adverts because our clients advertise and refer us to their families and friends. But if you remain unconvinced it is okay, we will respect your choice” I say with a tone that carried authority and firmness. I tried to but could not bring myself to act nasty and nonchalant. I also was not sure if that would be the best way to talk to a prospective client. Mr. White took his time and checked through the contract agreement once again and talked with his staff that came along with him before responding. “I have checked it again and I have decide to go on with it. I am sure I will get the worth of the money” he says and takes out his pen to sign at the space reserved for his signature. I was unsure whether I should put my signature. The other space was reserved for the CEO not the CEO’s representative so it was definitely not in my place to sign. “I must say, Kevin really has capable hands. Nice doing business with you, Miss…” I had not introduced myself earlier. “Kira. Kira Mason. Nice doing business with you too, Mr. White. I hope we get to handle more of your projects in the future” I respond with a smile plastered on my face. I heaved a sigh of relief as I stepped out of the conference room. The next thing I have to do is to give Kevin the documents to sign. I walk up to his secretary’s office and ask to see him. “He is currently not in his office. You will have to see him tomorrow” his secretary replies. Was he not in the office just now? I will have to give his secretary the document then. “Please, can you help me get this across to him tomorrow?” I ask her politely. “No, please do not give me anything. I do not want any problems. You have two working hands, hand it to him tomorrow yourself” she says and rolls her eyes at me. What problem can possibly arise from giving someone a document? There were still many things I have not yet known about Chester Incorporated. I go to my office to wait for the closing time. I am very bored and decide to go through the document again since I do not have any work I was doing at the moment. I check the nature of the project, the time duration, the resources to be used and the amount everything was going to cost. Something was not right about the figures written. I know this because I was usually with my dad most of the times whenever he was drafting construction contracts. Since this was a long time ago, I check the internet for the prices of each materials. The figures were seriously inflated. I had to recheck twice to be sure of what I saw. Mr. White was absolutely right about his observation. This was a big time scam. Now I was a participant in this evil. Was this how Kevin Chester got his wealth? By scamming ignorant people? My phone begins to ring. It is Ava. “Girl, what are you still doing up there? It is thirty minutes past the closing time” “I am coming now, just wait for me.” I put the document in my bag. I will ask my dad to confirm my findings. The walk home is very quiet. I am still thinking about everything. “Is anything the problem, Kira? First you got out of your office thirty minutes past the closing time. You are usually the one hurrying me to come out. Now, you are oddly quiet on our way home. Something must be going on” Ava says. I want to tell her about everything I had discovered but I need to confirm it but first from my dad before drawing conclusions. “Or is it about Kevin calling you by another name? I have told you it is normal but if you want I can explain why” Ava continues. I have even forgotten about that. Since, she brought it up now, I might as well hear it. “Yeah, please explain” I reply. “Well I have heard people in my department making jokes about how Kevin usually calls them by another name. The head of our department has even once said that Kevin had claimed not to know him during a meeting all the heads of department had with him. He almost got sacked if not for the intervention of Ryan. Though it has never happened to me personally. I guess that is his own way of catching fun” Ava reveals. “This man is definitely a weirdo” Ava nods in agreement. Unlike Ava, I do not think this is normal. Absolutely not.
