(Ariana’s POV)
I thought choosing Damian would make things easier.
I was wrong.
The moment the bond settled—truly settled—inside my chest, the world shifted around me. Not softly. Not gently. It was like stepping onto unfamiliar ground and realizing the earth itself was watching.
Feeling me.
Judging whether I belonged.
I woke before dawn, wrapped in Damian’s arms, the steady rise and fall of his chest grounding me. The fire had burned low, leaving only glowing embers and shadows stretched long across the room.
I should have felt peace.
Instead, my skin buzzed.
Not fear.
Awareness.
The bond pulsed beneath my wrist, warm and alive, sending small sparks through my veins. I could feel Damian even in sleep—his presence anchored, solid, a quiet promise of protection.
But beneath that… tension.
The pack.
They knew.
I slipped carefully from his arms, pressing a soft kiss to his shoulder before standing. The moment my feet touched the floor, the sensation intensified. Every sound sharpened. Every scent layered itself into meaning—stone, pine, smoke, wolf.
Me.
I inhaled sharply.
This wasn’t human awareness anymore.
I wrapped myself in one of Damian’s shirts and stepped closer to the window. The forest beyond stirred with life. Wolves moved at the edges of my perception—patrolling, watching, whispering.
I could feel their emotions like faint echoes.
Suspicion.
Curiosity.
Resentment.
Fear.
Fear of me.
“You shouldn’t be awake alone.”
Damian’s voice came from behind me, low and rough with sleep.
I turned. He was sitting up now, eyes silvered faintly, gaze locked on me as if the bond had tugged him awake the moment I stepped away.
“I didn’t want to wake you,” I said softly.
He crossed the room in seconds, hands settling on my hips, pulling me against him. The bond surged in response, heat blooming in my chest.
“You don’t leave without me,” he murmured. Not a command. A truth.
I rested my forehead against his. “They’re watching.”
His jaw tightened. “I know.”
“They’re afraid,” I added. “And angry.”
His eyes darkened. “They don’t get to decide your worth.”
I hesitated. “But they do get to decide whether they’ll follow you.”
A muscle jumped in his jaw.
“That’s my problem,” he said.
“No,” I said gently. “It’s ours now.”
He studied me carefully, as if seeing me again for the first time. “You feel it more clearly.”
I nodded. “I hear them. Not words—feelings. The bond… it opened something.”
He exhaled slowly. “That’s not supposed to happen so fast.”
“So I really am different,” I whispered.
“Yes,” he said without hesitation. “And not in the way they fear.”
He kissed my temple. “You’re stronger.”
The pack gathered by midmorning.
Damian didn’t announce it. He didn’t need to. The moment he stepped onto the stone platform outside the Alpha house—with me at his side—the air changed.
Eyes tracked us.
Whispers rippled.
Elena stood near the front.
Waiting.
I felt her before I saw her—sharp jealousy coiled tight, burning like acid beneath a practiced calm.
“This is a mistake,” she said loudly, breaking the hush. “You didn’t even wait for the council’s blessing.”
Damian’s grip on my hand tightened. “I don’t need permission to choose my mate.”
“She’s human,” Elena snapped. “Or she was. Now she’s something else. Something unstable.”
I stepped forward before Damian could speak.
The pack stilled.
“I didn’t choose this bond,” I said, voice steady despite my racing heart. “But I chose him.”
Murmurs rippled.
Elena scoffed. “And that makes you Luna?”
I met her gaze. “No. It makes me willing to stand beside the Alpha even when your fear turns into cruelty.”
Her eyes flashed. “You don’t belong here.”
The bond flared.
Not violently.
Commandingly.
The ground beneath my feet thrummed, a low vibration passing through the stone. Gasps broke out as several wolves instinctively dropped their gazes.
I froze.
Damian’s eyes widened—then softened with something dangerously close to awe.
Elena staggered back a step.
“What did you just do?” she whispered.
I swallowed. “I didn’t try to do anything.”
Damian stepped forward, voice ringing with Alpha authority. “Enough.”
Silence slammed down.
“She is under my protection,” he continued. “She is my chosen mate. And if any of you believe that gives you the right to challenge her—”
He let his power roll free.
Wolves bowed.
Some reluctantly.
Some instinctively.
Elena stood rigid, fists clenched.
“This isn’t over,” she said quietly.
I believed her.
(Damian’s POV)
I had known Ariana would change.
I had not known she would awaken.
What she did in the courtyard shouldn’t have been possible—not without years of bonding, training, or latent power.
And yet the pack felt it.
So did I.
“She’s not human anymore,” my wolf murmured, awe threading his voice.
No, I answered slowly. She’s something new.
That terrified me.
And made me fiercely proud.
When the pack dispersed, I pulled her into my office and shut the door firmly behind us.
“You need to tell me everything you feel,” I said.
She nodded, sitting across from me, fingers fidgeting. “It’s like… the bond isn’t just connecting us. It’s reshaping me. I can feel emotions. Pressure. Authority.”
I leaned forward. “Authority?”
She swallowed. “When Elena challenged me… something answered. Not anger. Certainty.”
My blood ran cold.
“There are legends,” I said slowly. “Rare bonds. Ones that don’t follow the rules.”
Her eyes widened. “You think that’s what this is?”
“I think,” I said carefully, “that the bond didn’t just choose you as my mate.”
She held her breath.
“I think it chose you as my equal.”
The room went silent.
“I don’t want power,” she whispered.
“I know,” I said softly. “Which is exactly why it answered you.”
She stood abruptly and crossed the room, hands pressing to my chest. “Then teach me. Please. I don’t want to hurt anyone.”
I covered her hands with mine. “I will. Every step.”
The bond pulsed—warm, approving.
But beneath it, a darker ripple stirred.
A warning.
That night, Ariana dreamed.
And this time, the dream did not belong to her.
She stood in a forest lit by silver moonlight. Wolves circled her—not threatening, not submissive. Watching.
Waiting.
A voice echoed—not Damian’s.
Balance must be kept.
She woke screaming.
I was there instantly, holding her, heart hammering as the bond screamed alarm.
“What did you see?” I demanded.
She clutched my shirt. “Something ancient. Something that knows me.”
I closed my eyes.
The legends were real.
And if the pack thought Elena was dangerous…
They hadn’t yet seen what the bond had truly awakened.
