What the Pack Sees

1163 Words
(Ariana’s POV) I woke to the sound of breathing that wasn’t mine. Deep. Steady. Protective. For a terrifying half-second, I forgot everything—rogues, werewolves, mate bonds—and panic flared. Then I shifted slightly, and strong arms tightened around me, anchoring me instantly. Damian. The memory of the night before rushed back all at once: the firelight, his hands, the way his voice had softened when he said my name like it mattered more than anything else in the world. I relaxed into him without thinking. The bond hummed contentedly, warm and alive beneath my skin, no longer sharp or overwhelming—just there, like it had always belonged. “You’re awake,” he murmured, lips brushing my hair. “How did you know?” I whispered. “I always know,” he said simply. That shouldn’t have felt comforting. But it did. I turned slowly to face him. Morning light filtered through the tall windows, illuminating the sharp lines of his face, the silver in his eyes softer now, calmer than I’d ever seen them. Last night had changed something. Not just between us. Within him. Within me. “Damian,” I said quietly, “what happens now?” His thumb traced slow circles on my arm. “Now the pack sees you.” My stomach tightened. “They already have.” “Yes,” he agreed. “But not like this.” I swallowed. “Like your mate.” He didn’t correct me. He kissed my forehead instead. “You don’t have to face them today if you don’t want to.” But the bond pulsed gently—encouraging, steady. “I do,” I said after a moment. “If I’m staying… I won’t hide.” Something fierce flashed through his eyes. Pride. “Then stay close to me,” he said. “They will feel it. The bond. There’s no denying it now.” I hesitated. “Even Elena?” His jaw tightened. “Especially Elena.” The pack house felt different in daylight. Louder. More alive. As Damian and I walked through the halls together, conversations faltered. Wolves turned. Scents shifted. I felt it—the way awareness rippled outward, the way attention locked onto me like gravity. Not hostile. But not welcoming either. Damian’s hand settled at the small of my back, firm and possessive. The simple touch steadied me more than I expected. “She’s glowing.” “Can you feel it?” “That bond—gods—” Whispers followed us into the main hall. The breakfast tables were full, but silence spread outward as Damian guided me toward the raised platform at the front of the room. He didn’t announce me. He didn’t need to. The bond did that for him. I felt it spill outward—warmth, connection, certainty—like the pack itself was being forced to acknowledge what Damian and I had already accepted. He turned to face them. “My pack,” he said calmly. “This is Ariana.” No titles. No explanations. Just my name. “She is under my protection,” he continued. “She carries my mark. And she stands beside me by choice.” Murmurs rippled through the room. Elena stood slowly. My pulse spiked. “You claim choice,” she said coolly, eyes locked on me, “but bonds influence the mind. Humans are weak to compulsion.” The insult stung. Before I could react, Damian spoke. “You will not insult her,” he said, voice like iron. “Not in my presence.” Elena’s lips curled. “Or what?” The air shifted. I felt Damian’s power rise—not explosive, not violent, but immense. Controlled. Terrifying. “Or you will learn what it means to challenge your Alpha,” he said quietly. Every wolf in the room bowed their head. Including Elena. But the hatred in her eyes didn’t fade. It sharpened. (Damian’s POV) They could smell it now. The bond. It rolled off Ariana in gentle waves, unmistakable and undeniable. Even the doubters felt it—the way the pack instinctively leaned toward her, the way my wolf settled instead of snarling. She belonged. And more importantly—she chose to. That choice mattered more than any instinct. I watched the pack carefully as they adjusted. Wolves were creatures of hierarchy and certainty, and Ariana disrupted both simply by existing. But disruption wasn’t weakness. It was evolution. “Elise,” I called. She stepped forward immediately. “Alpha.” “You’ll escort Ariana today,” I said. “Show her the territory. Introduce her properly.” Elise hesitated, then nodded. “Of course.” Ariana glanced at me, uncertainty flickering. I leaned close, murmuring, “I’ll be nearby. Always.” Her shoulders relaxed slightly. Good. As they left the hall, I caught Elena watching them, her expression tight, calculating. Dangerous. The rogues weren’t my only problem. (Ariana’s POV) Walking the territory was… surreal. Elise showed me the borders, the training grounds, the places where wolves gathered to celebrate, to mourn, to bond. “This land responds to Damian,” she explained. “And now… to you.” I frowned. “I don’t control anything.” “Not consciously,” she said. “But you anchor him. The Alpha’s mate always does.” That word still felt heavy. Mate. As if summoned by the thought, a sudden wave of dizziness hit me. I grabbed Elise’s arm, gasping. “Ariana?” “I’m fine—just—” The world sharpened abruptly. Too sharp. I could hear heartbeats. Smell the earth. Feel Damian—far away but suddenly alarmed. “Damian,” I whispered. A moment later, he was there. He appeared out of nowhere, arms around me, power flaring protectively. “What happened?” he demanded. “I don’t know,” I admitted breathlessly. “It felt like… too much.” He closed his eyes briefly, pressing his forehead to mine. “The bond is settling,” he murmured. “Your senses are adjusting.” Elise looked shaken. “That was fast.” Damian opened his eyes sharply. “Too fast.” “What does that mean?” I asked. “It means,” he said slowly, “that whatever happened to you during the rogue attack accelerated things.” My chest tightened. “Is that bad?” His expression softened—but worry lingered beneath it. “It means you’re becoming something the pack hasn’t seen in a very long time.” “Which is?” I whispered. He kissed my temple. “Someone powerful enough to change everything.” That night, as Damian held me close again, I couldn’t shake the feeling that peace was temporary. The pack was watching me. Elena was waiting. And the bond—no longer fragile—was growing teeth. I wasn’t just the Alpha’s mate anymore. I was becoming something the world wasn’t ready for. And deep down… Neither was I.
