(Ariana’s POV)
I woke up knowing something had changed.
Not because the room looked different—it didn’t. The same soft gray walls, the same tall window overlooking the forest, the same quiet hum of guards stationed outside my door. But inside me… something had shifted.
The mark burned.
Not painfully. Not sharply. Just enough to remind me it existed, like a second heartbeat beneath my skin.
I sat up slowly, pulling the blanket tighter around my shoulders. Sunlight streamed through the curtains, warming my legs, but it did nothing to calm the strange restlessness twisting in my chest.
Damian.
I could feel him.
Not clearly—not like a voice or a thought—but like a presence. Solid. Steady. Close. It was the same sensation I’d felt right before he returned from the fight last night.
The realization made my breath hitch.
This isn’t normal, I told myself. You’re not supposed to feel someone like this.
But then again, I wasn’t supposed to be marked by an Alpha werewolf either.
A soft knock came at the door.
“Come in,” I said.
Elise stepped inside.
She looked different today—less sharp, more guarded. Her eyes flicked to my wrist instantly.
The mark glowed faintly beneath my skin.
Her jaw tightened.
“You’re awake,” she said.
“I am,” I replied carefully.
There was an awkward pause.
“The Alpha called a council meeting,” Elise said. “He asked me to escort you.”
My stomach dropped. “A… council?”
“Yes.” Her lips pressed together. “The pack elders. Betas. Gammas. Anyone who thinks they have a say in Damian’s choices.”
“And I’m one of those choices?” I asked quietly.
She didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
The council chamber was massive—stone walls carved with symbols I didn’t recognize, long wooden benches forming a circle around a raised platform. The air buzzed with tension, thick with the scent of wolves and something sharper beneath it.
Disapproval.
Every head turned when I entered.
I felt exposed instantly. Human. Fragile. Out of place.
Damian stood at the center of the chamber, dressed in dark clothes that hugged his powerful frame, his posture calm but coiled like a storm waiting to break.
His gaze locked on me.
The bond surged, warmth flooding my chest, grounding me. He didn’t smile—but something softened in his eyes.
“You’re safe,” he said, voice carrying through the room.
The words weren’t just for me.
They were a warning.
I took the seat beside him, hands folded tightly in my lap.
Murmurs rippled through the chamber.
“She’s human.”
“This is reckless.”
“The Alpha’s judgment—”
Damian raised a hand.
Silence slammed down.
“We will begin,” he said evenly.
An older man stepped forward, silver hair braided down his back, eyes sharp as flint. “You brought a human into our territory, Damian.”
“Yes,” Damian replied.
“And marked her.”
“Yes.”
Gasps echoed around the room.
The elder’s gaze cut to me. “Do you understand what you are, girl?”
My spine stiffened.
“I understand I didn’t ask for this,” I said, voice trembling but steady. “And I understand I’m being talked about like I’m not even here.”
The chamber went still.
Damian’s lips twitched—barely—but pride flared through the bond.
The elder studied me for a long moment. “You’re brave,” he said. “I’ll give you that.”
“Bravery doesn’t make her Luna,” a woman snapped from the benches.
I turned.
She was stunning—long dark hair, piercing green eyes, power radiating off her in waves. Her gaze burned with barely restrained fury.
“Elena,” Elise muttered under her breath.
“She’s not our Luna,” Elena continued, standing. “She’s human. Weak. Temporary.”
My chest tightened.
Damian’s voice dropped, dangerous and quiet. “Sit down.”
Elena ignored him. “You’re risking the pack for a fling.”
That was when Damian snapped.
The floor cracked beneath his feet as he stepped forward, power rolling through the chamber like thunder.
“She is not a fling,” he growled. “She is my mate.”
The word echoed.
Mate.
Elena’s face went pale. “That’s impossible.”
“It’s not,” Damian said. “And I will not hear her disrespected again.”
I swallowed hard, the bond humming with raw emotion—anger, protectiveness, something fierce and undeniable.
The elder raised his hand. “Enough. Damian, this bond… is it complete?”
“No,” Damian said immediately.
Every eye swung to him.
“I marked her instinctively to protect her,” he continued. “She has not accepted the bond. She has not been claimed.”
Relief rippled through the chamber.
My heart twisted.
Elena’s lips curled into a satisfied smile.
“So she can still leave,” she said.
“Yes,” Damian replied.
The word hit harder than I expected.
“And if she does?” the elder pressed.
Damian’s jaw tightened. “Then I will honor her choice.”
A lie.
I could feel it now—the bond had grown stronger overnight, more honest. His pain lurked beneath the calm like a wound he refused to acknowledge.
The council murmured again.
“The rogues will not stop,” another Beta warned. “They sense weakness.”
Damian’s eyes flashed. “There is no weakness here.”
“They will see a human mate as leverage.”
Damian turned to me then, his voice softer. “This is why I need you to understand what staying means.”
The room faded.
All I could see was him.
“What does it mean?” I whispered.
“It means danger,” he said honestly. “It means being part of a world that will never fully accept you. It means your life will never be simple again.”
I nodded slowly.
“And leaving?” I asked.
He hesitated.
“It means losing you,” he said quietly. “And it means I will still protect you from the shadows. Always.”
The bond pulsed painfully.
I stood.
The room erupted into shocked murmurs.
“I didn’t ask to be here,” I said, voice shaking but growing stronger with every word. “I didn’t believe in werewolves. Or mates. Or fate.”
I took a breath.
“But I believe in choice.”
Damian’s eyes burned with intensity.
“I won’t decide today,” I continued. “I won’t be pushed by fear or pressure or threats. Not from rogues. Not from this council.”
Elena scoffed. “You think you have power here?”
I turned to her. “I think I have myself.”
Silence fell.
The elder nodded slowly. “Three days,” he said. “As agreed. After that, the human decides.”
The meeting adjourned abruptly.
As the chamber emptied, Damian approached me.
“You didn’t have to do that,” he murmured.
“I did,” I said. “If I’m going to stay—or leave—it’ll be on my terms.”
His gaze softened. “That’s exactly why the bond chose you.”
Before I could respond, shouting echoed from outside the chamber.
A familiar voice cut through the noise.
“Ariana!”
My blood ran cold.
I turned toward the entrance.
“No,” I whispered.
Damian stiffened. “What is it?”
The doors burst open.
And standing there—disheveled, furious, and unmistakably human—was my ex-boyfriend.
“You thought you could disappear?” he snarled, eyes locking onto me. “You ruined Christmas. You ruined everything.”
Damian stepped in front of me instantly, power radiating off him in lethal waves.
“Leave,” Damian growled.
My ex laughed nervously. “Who the hell are you?”
The bond flared violently.
“I’m the man,” Damian said coldly, “who will end you if you take another step toward her.”
Fear flashed across my ex’s face.
But behind it…
Something darker stirred.
Because he wasn’t alone.
And the scent flooding the chamber wasn’t human.
It was rogue.
