Chapter seventeen

The ink on the thick parchment was barely dry when the raven returned from the eastern front, bearing the broken crimson wax seal of Alpha Silas. Inside the Citadel’s inner reception chamber, two hours past noon, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. The heavy velvet draperies had been pulled back to let in the pale afternoon sun, illuminating the polished mahogany table where the draft of the Ironwood Accord rested. Valen sat at the head of the table in his full Alpha mantle—a high-collared tunic of black wool reinforced with dark iron pauldrons and draped with the thick, silver-fox fur of his lineage. Beside him sat Nora, poised and silent in a tailored dress of deep charcoal velvet. Her long dark hair was half-pinned with carved silver combs, her expression entirely composed despite the heavy weight of the moment. Opposite them sat Lord Raymond—the senior diplomatic envoy of the Crimson Fang Pack. He was a tall, lean wolf with slicked-back graying hair, sharp blue eyes, and a face carved into a permanent, aristocratic sneer. Surrounding him were two heavily armed guards who stood rigid near the archway, their hands resting nervously on their sword hilts. "This is not a negotiation, Alpha Vane," Lord Raymond spoke, his voice dry, raspy, and laced with suppressed indignation. "This is outright extortion. You demand the permanent territorial transfer of the Ironwood timber mills—the single most lucrative logging operation in the Eastern Coalition—along with ten years of tax-free trade access through the eastern pass." Valen didn't blink. He leaned back in his high carved armchair, resting one arm over the carved wooden armrest while his other hand remained flat on the table near Nora's. "You misunderstand your position, Envoy," Valen said, his deep voice carrying a low, tectonic frequency that made the silver inkwells on the table vibrate. "I am not negotiating with Silas. I am stating the price for his nephew's head." Lord Raymond’s thin lips pressed into a tight line, his sharp eyes flicking toward Nora with obvious disdain. "Alpha Silas assembled a coalition of five packs to secure our eastern borders from northern aggression. To strip us of our primary timber supply for the release of a single officer—" "Commander Vane is not merely an officer," Nora interrupted softly, her calm, clear voice cutting through the envoy’s rising irritation. Raymond turned his gaze toward her, his eyebrows pulling together in a harsh, condescending frown. "The Alpha's guest would do well to leave military matters to the sovereign lords who understand the cost of war." Before Valen could unleash the lethal wave of territorial aura building in his chest, Nora raised her small hand in a quiet, stopping gesture. She looked directly into Raymond's arrogant blue eyes, her brown eyes completely calm, cold, and razor-sharp. "Commander Vane is Alpha Silas’s blood nephew and the designated heir to the Crimson Fang lineage," Nora said, her voice smooth and unhurried as she laid out the facts like pieces on a chessboard. "Silas has no living sons. If Commander Vane remains in our holding cells or dies in iron chains, the Crimson Fang Pack enters a succession crisis the moment Silas falls. Your allied Alphas in the Eastern Coalition—specifically Alpha Drake of the Blood-Ridge Pack—are already waiting for Silas to show a sign of weakness so they can fracture the alliance and claim his territory." Lord Raymond froze. The pale color drained from his face, his jaw loosening by a fraction of a millimeter as he stared at the young woman sitting beside the Supreme Alpha. He had expected a low-born servant girl who would sit in passive silence while men traded threats. He had not prepared for a master mind who understood the internal blood-line politics of his home pack better than his own councilors. "You lose the timber mills today, Lord Raymond," Nora continued, leaning forward slightly, her posture straight and commanding. "Or you lose the future of the Crimson Fang Pack tomorrow. Choose which asset Alpha Silas values more." Silence settled over the reception chamber—dense, absolute, and broken only by the crackle of the hearth fire. Valen looked down at Nora, his golden eyes blazing with an intense, roaring pride that vibrated through their mate bond. He slowly reached across the table, picking up the silver quill, and slid the parchment across the dark wood directly in front of the frozen envoy. "Sign the treaty, Raymond," Valen commanded, his voice dropping into a cold, thunderous register that echoed off the stone walls. "Or return to Silas and tell him to choose a new heir." Lord Raymond’s hand trembled slightly as he reached for the silver quill. He looked at Valen's cold, unyielding face, then back at Nora’s calm, unreadable brown eyes. He knew he had been completely outmaneuvered. The wolf-less Luna had backed the Eastern Coalition into a corner where surrender was their only surviving option. With a heavy, ragged exhale, Raymond dipped the quill in black ink and signed his name across the bottom of the parchment, pressing the crimson seal of the Crimson Fang Pack into the hot wax below. "The Coalition forces will begin their withdrawal from the Ironwood River by dusk," Raymond said quietly, his aristocratic pride utterly shattered as he pushed the signed treaty back across the table. "Commander Vane will be released at the border post?" "The moment our scouts verify that every Coalition warrior has crossed to the eastern bank of the river," Valen replied smoothly. "Not a second before." Raymond rose from his chair, offering a stiff, bitter bow to Valen, before casting a final, wary glance at Nora. Without another word, the envoy turned and marched swiftly out of the reception chamber, his two guards scrambling to follow him into the corridor. The moment the heavy double doors clicked shut, Torin stepped out from the shadowed alcove near the window, a broad, booming laugh bursting from his chest. "By the Moon!" Torin cheered, slapping his broad hand against his thigh. "The timber mills alone will double our winter trade revenue! We just secured the eastern border for a decade without losing a single drop of blood!" "Send two vanguard squadrons to occupy the logging forts immediately," Valen ordered Torin, his tone sharp and disciplined even in victory. "Ensure the transition of ownership is enforced before nightfall." "At once, Alpha!" Torin bowed deeply to both of them, a fierce, triumphant grin on his scarred face as he turned and hurried out to rally the vanguard. As the chamber fell quiet once more, Valen turned to Nora. He reached out, taking her hands in his broad, warm palms, pulling her gently out of her chair and bringing her flush against his broad chest. "You handled him brilliantly, Nora," Valen murmured, his voice rich with deep, unyielding devotion as he looked into her dark brown eyes. "You stripped an entire coalition of their economic leverage in five minutes." Nora rested her hands flat against his iron-clad chest, feeling the steady, powerful thrum of his heartbeat against her palms. A soft, genuine smile touched her lips as she looked up into his burning amber eyes. "They thought my lack of a wolf made me blind to their games, Valen," Nora whispered softly, her fingers lightly tracing the silver wolf crest on his shoulder pauldron. "They are going to learn that the most dangerous weapon in this Citadel isn't a wolf spirit—it's knowing how to read the enemy." Valen let out a low, dark rumble of pure satisfaction deep in his chest. He lowered his head, his warm lips capturing hers in a deep, lingering kiss that sealed their political triumph with the absolute, unbreakable fire of their mate bond. The eastern threat was broken, the elders were silenced, and as Nora stood wrapped in the arms of the Supreme Alpha, she knew that her reign as Luna of the Blackwood Pack had truly begun.
