Chapter eleven

1212 Words
The midnight air over the Blackwood mountains was cold enough to turn a man’s breath into ice the moment it left his lungs. High above the valley floor, on the northern battlements of the Citadel, Nora stood with her hands resting on the snow-dusted stone parapet. She wore a heavy cloak of dark blue wool lined with white fur, its heavy hood pulled up against the biting wind that whipped through the high spires. Beside her stood Valen. His broad frame blocked the worst of the mountain gales, his hand resting securely against the small of her back. His territorial aura hummed beneath his skin, casting an invisible, warming shield around her that kept the freezing mountain air at bay. Far below in the valley, a long line of torchlight moved steadily through the narrow mountain pass. The low thrum of iron-shod hooves and heavy wagon wheels echoed up the canyon walls as Torin’s vanguard returned from the Bloodmoon border. "They returned faster than I anticipated," Nora said softly, her dark eyes following the crawling river of fire below. "Torin moves like a shadow when he has a clear objective," Valen replied, his deep voice carrying a quiet rumble of satisfaction. "And he was moving on your intelligence, Nora. He knew exactly where to strike without wasting time on reconnaissance." Nora looked out over the dark expanse of the valley. "Did Mark resist?" "If he did, he failed," Valen said plainly. "Mark is a coward who only bullies those smaller than him. When faced with two full squadrons of my elite vanguard, he would have locked his gates and hidden behind his guards." Ten minutes later, the massive iron gates of the lower courtyard ground open on their heavy chains. Valen guided Nora down through the inner galleries to the courtyard overlook, where the air was thick with the scent of pine sweat, cold steel, and fresh snow. Torin dismounted his massive warhorse with a heavy clatter of armor, his dark cloak spattered with mud and frost. Behind him stretched a line of thirty heavy wooden supply wagons, each stacked high with iron-strapped grain crates and heavy wooden barrels of medicinal oil. Torin marched up the stone steps toward the grand portico, removing his leather riding gloves. He stopped five paces from Valen and Nora, dropping into a formal, deep bow that brought his knee to the snow-covered stone. "Alpha. Luna," Torin announced, his rough voice ringing clearly across the torchlit courtyard. "The mission is complete. We breached the hidden cellars beneath the old timber mill at two hours past midnight." "Report," Valen commanded. "The inventory was precisely as Lady Nora described," Torin said, looking up with a razor-sharp glint in his eyes. "We found two hundred and fifty crates of prime winter grain and seventy barrels of concentrated oil hidden behind fake stone bulkheads. We seized the full tribute owed to the Citadel, along with the fifty percent penalty for fraud." Nora felt a subtle, electric thrill run through her veins. For years, she had carried those heavy crates down into those dark cellar holes under the lash of overseers' whips. To see them now, loaded onto Blackwood wagons to feed the northern people, felt like a silent, poetic justice. "And the Bloodmoon guards?" Nora asked quietly. Torin offered a grim, scarred smile. "The border overseer attempted to claim the cellar was private property of House Mark. When I informed him the order came directly from the new Luna of the Blackwood Pack, he attempted to draw steel." Torin gestured behind him toward the third wagon in line. Bound in iron chains, his face bruised and covered in grime, sat the chief tax collector of the Bloodmoon Pack—the very man who had overseen Nora’s daily rations for five years. "He is yours to judge, my Luna," Torin said, bowing his head again. "He awaits your command in the lower holding cells." Nora looked down at the chained man sitting in the wagon. She recognized his sharp, pinched face instantly. He was the man who had deducted half her bread ration whenever a dish was broken in the kitchen. He was the man who had laughed when Lady Mindy ordered her thrown into the cold cellar without a blanket. Now, he sat shivering in iron links, staring up at the grand portico of the Blackwood Citadel, his eyes wide with absolute, horrifying terror as he recognized the girl in the fur-lined cloak standing beside Supreme Alpha Valen. Valen turned his head slightly, his golden eyes fixing onto Nora's pale face, reading every flicker of emotion passing through her mind. He leaned down, his voice dropping into a low, private murmur that only she could hear. "Say the word, Nora," Valen whispered, his voice dark and deadly. "I will have his head placed on a spike at the Bloodmoon border post before dawn." Nora stared at her former tormentor for a long, quiet moment. The cold wind howled around the stone pillars of the courtyard, rustling the heavy wool of her cloak. She could feel the immense power sitting at her fingertips—the absolute authority to end a life with a single nod of her head. She looked at the man's trembling shoulders, his pale, sweat-slicked face, and the pathetic way he tried to curl into a ball to escape the freezing air. Nora took a slow, deep breath, letting the steadying warmth of Valen’s bond fill her spirit. "No," Nora said, her voice clear, calm, and carrying across the quiet courtyard. "Execution is too quick for a man who managed numbers for a living." Valen raised a brow, a dark spark of intrigue flashing in his amber eyes. "What do you propose?" "Stripped of his rank," Nora commanded, looking directly into Torin's sharp eyes. "Put him in simple woolen tunic and work boots. Put him to work in the lower grain vaults under Mrs. Gable's supervision. He will spend this winter manually measuring out rations for our border guards—the exact rations he tried to steal from them." Torin’s scarred face split into a broad, booming laugh that echoed off the stone walls of the fortress. "By the Moon, that is a far worse sentence than a quick blade! He will starve on his own precise accounting!" Valen looked down at Nora, his chest swelling with an intense, roaring pride that made his wolf whine with pure devotion. She hadn't chosen revenge out of petty rage; she had chosen a punishment that demonstrated absolute dominance while reinforcing the discipline of his territory. "You hear your Luna," Valen ordered, his voice thunderous across the courtyard. "Take him to the vaults. And distribute the seized grain to the southern border outposts by noon tomorrow." "At once, Alpha!" Torin barked, turning to execute the orders. Valen wrapped his broad arm around Nora’s shoulders, pulling her close against his side as the courtyard erupted into disciplined activity. He looked down into her dark brown eyes, his heart beating with a fierce, unyielding devotion. "You rule with iron and intelligence, Nora," Valen murmured, pressing a warm kiss against her crown. "The elders may have questioned your bloodline... but by morning, the entire realm will know who holds the true power in the North."
