The grand corridor of the Bloodmoon Pack house descended into a dead, terrifying silence.
Nora felt the warmth of Alpha Valen’s heavy hand on her cheek, a stark contrast to the glacial air of the drafty hall. Her heart hammered against her ribs, echoing in her ears like a war drum. Every survival instinct she had built over a decade of torment roared at her to pull away, to drop to her knees, to beg forgiveness for whatever unseen offense she had committed. But as she looked up into those molten silver eyes, her muscles refused to obey.
"She is my Luna."
The words hung in the air, heavy and absolute, shattering the brittle composure of every noble wolf standing in the grand entryway.
Alpha Mark of the Bloodmoon Pack took a jarring step forward, his jaw slacking before snapping shut in visible outrage. Beside him, Mindy looked as though she had been slapped across the face. Her cheeks flushed a violent, splotchy red beneath her heavy makeup, her delicate hands trembling as they clutched the silk fabric of her designer gown.
"Alpha Vane... surely you are mistaken," Alpha Mark stammered, his voice straining to maintain a polite, deferential veneer while bleeding panic. He gestured frantically toward Nora, as if pointing out a smear of grime on a fine piece of china. "That girl is Nora. She is a wolf-less orphan, a charity case kept on our estate out of pure mercy. She has no pack rank, no bloodline of note, and no wolf inside her. She cannot be your mate. The Moon Goddess would never give the supreme Alpha of the Northern Territories a broken runt!"
Valen’s hand remained rested gently against Nora’s face, his thumb tracing the bone of her cheek with unbearable softness. But at Mark’s words, the posture of the legendary Alpha shifted.
Slowly, Valen turned his head. The warmth in his expression vanished instantly, replaced by a expression so ice-cold, so utterly devoid of humanity, that Alpha Mark recoiled a full step back.
"Are you questioning the divine will of the Moon Goddess, Alpha Mark?" Valen asked. His voice was not loud, but it possessed a dense, terrifying weight that seemed to press down directly on the chests of everyone present. "Or are you questioning *my* ability to recognize the woman soul-bound to my own?"
"N-no, of course not, Your Grace," Mark stammered, sweat breaking out across his brow. "I only mean—"
"You mean to speak ill of my Luna in my presence," Valen interrupted softly, stepping completely in front of Nora, placing his massive, broad-shouldered frame between her and the hostile gazes of the Bloodmoon court. He raised his left arm slightly, gesturing to the tall, stern warrior standing just behind his right shoulder. "Torin."
"Alpha," the warrior replied instantly, stepping forward. Torin was Valen’s Gamma, a broad-chested man with scar-pitted skin and eyes as sharp as flint.
"Prepare the transport," Valen commanded quietly, his amber-silver gaze fixing back onto Nora. "We are leaving."
Gasps echoed down the long hallway.
"Leaving?" Alpha Mark gasped, stepping into Valen's path, though he kept a respectful three-foot distance. "Alpha Vane, the Solstice Summit has not even begun! The regional Alphas have traveled hundreds of miles to negotiate the northern trade routes with you! You cannot simply leave the feast!"
Valen didn't even look at him. His focus was entirely pinned on Nora, who stood frozen in the shadow of his massive frame. She looked so small in her oversized, faded sweater—her skin pale, her dark hair tangled and dull from cheap lye soap, her hands red and swollen from scrubbing cold floors. Yet beneath the dirt and weariness, he saw the sharp, beautiful line of her jaw and the quiet, fierce resilience burning deep in her dark brown eyes.
Thirty years he had searched for her. Thirty years of endless political banquets, empty courtships with ambitious high-caste females, and the suffocating fear that he was destined to rule his massive empire entirely alone. He had been offered princesses, warriors, and daughters of ancient bloodlines, yet none of them had stirred a single flicker of heat in his chest.
And here she was. Kept in the dark, forced to scrub floors for wolves who were not fit to breathe the same air as her.
"My business in the Bloodmoon territory is concluded," Valen said, his voice ringing out clearly through the grand hall. "I came here searching for nothing. I leave with everything."
"She is a member of my pack!" Mindy shrieked suddenly, her composure snapping completely. She pushed past her father, her eyes wild with humiliation and hatred as she pointed a manicured finger at Nora. "She belongs to the Bloodmoon Pack! You cannot just take our servants! She hasn't been granted permission to leave!"
Valen’s eyes locked onto Mindy. The temperature in the room plummeted. An oppressive, suffocating pressure dropped over the hallway like an iron curtain—the pure, unadulterated territorial aura of a apex Alpha.
Mindy gasped, staggering backward as her knees buckled under the weight of the pressure. She hit the stone floor hard, clutching her throat as if the very air had been stripped from her lungs. Alpha Mark dropped to one knee, groaning under the immense force of Valen’s aura, his own wolf whining in submission within his chest.
"She does not belong to you," Valen growled, the sound vibrating straight through the stone floorboards. "She never did. Touch her, speak to her, or look at her with disrespect again, and I will tear this pack house down to its foundations."
Nora’s breath hitched. She had spent her entire life watching wolves bow to authority, but she had never seen authority like this. It was absolute, unyielding, and terrifying. Yet, as Valen stood before her, radiating enough power to bring an entire pack to its knees, the hand he extended to her was steady, gentle, and patient.
"Nora," he said softly, his voice dropping into a low, warm tone meant only for her ears. The crushing pressure in the room eased slightly, giving her room to breathe. "Will you come with me?"
Nora looked at his outstretched hand. His palm was broad, lined with calluses from swords and training equipment, radiating an impossible, comforting warmth. Then she looked past him, at the glaring, hateful faces of the Bloodmoon wolves—the people who had treated her like garbage, who had let her freeze, starve, and bleed for nineteen long years.
She had no wolf. She had no status. She had nothing to offer an Alpha who ruled the north. If she went with him, she would be stepping into a world of politics, danger, and scrutiny far beyond anything she had ever known.
But if she stayed, she would die in the dark, scrubbing floors until her hands gave out.
Nora took a deep, trembling breath, reached out her bruised, cold hand, and placed her fingers gently into his palm.
The moment their skin touched, a jolt of pure, golden energy shot up her arm, burning away the chill in her bones and sending a wave of electric warmth straight to her heart. Valen’s fingers folded gently over hers, strong and protective, closing around her small hand like a fortress.
"Let's go home," Valen whispered.
Without another word to the kneeling, terrified Bloodmoon leadership, Valen turned, pulling Nora gently beside him as he swept out of the grand hall and into the crisp, starry mountain night.
