Chapter four

1555 Words
The transition from the lush, temperate pine forests of the Bloodmoon territory to the jagged, frost-dusted peaks of the Blackwood domain was harsh and unforgiving. As the high-end armored convoy climbed higher into the mountain passes, the paved roads gave way to reinforced stone highways carved directly into the living rock. Outside the SUV's tinted windows, towering walls of black granite stretched upward toward a moonlit sky, shrouded in swirls of silver mist. Nora had drifted into a light, fitful sleep, exhausted by years of physical labor and the emotional whiplash of the night's events. But as the vehicle slowed to a crawl, the shift in engine pitch pulled her back to full consciousness. She blinked against the soft ambient lighting of the cabin, instinctively pulling Valen’s heavy coat tighter around her shoulders. Sitting beside her, Valen was already awake—or perhaps he had never slept at all. He was reviewing a series of encrypted tactical documents on a glass tablet, the cool blue light highlighting the sharp, uncompromising angles of his jawline. The moment she moved, his eyes snapped away from the screen, softening as they landed on her face. "We are entering the inner valley," Valen said, his voice a low, soothing murmur that settled the immediate wave of panic in her chest. "Look." Nora leaned slightly toward the window, pressing her hand against the cool glass. Below them, nestled in a vast, bowl-shaped mountain valley surrounded by natural sheer cliffs, lay the heart of the Blackwood Pack—the Citadel. It was unlike anything Nora had ever seen. While the Bloodmoon territory consisted of sprawling timber estates built for ostentatious luxury, the Blackwood Citadel was an imposing fortress of ancient stone and modern steel. Towering watchtowers flared with blue-burning braziers, and sprawling stone residential sectors radiated outward from a massive central stronghold that sat like a sleeping dragon in the center of the valley. It looked impenetrable, terrifying, and utterly grand. "It's... massive," Nora breathed, her voice filled with quiet awe. "It is a fortress built to survive anything," Valen said, placing the tablet aside. "For thirty years, it has been my military headquarters and my home. Now, it is yours." Nora’s heart did a nervous flip. The reality of her situation came crashing back over her. She was a nameless servant in threadbare clothes, entering the most formidable pack stronghold in the hemisphere as its prospective Luna. As if sensing her spiking anxiety, Valen reached across the small gap between them, sliding his broad hand over her cold, trembling fingers. His warmth seeped instantly into her skin, grounding her. "You do not need to perform for anyone tonight, Nora," he said firmly, his thumb stroking her knuckles. "My personal wing in the main stronghold is completely isolated. You will have food, rest, and privacy. I have already instructed my head housekeeper to ensure you are not disturbed." "And your elders?" Nora asked quietly, looking into his amber eyes. "Your court?" Valen’s gaze darkened slightly, a sharp glint flickering in his eyes. "They will be informed of my return and my choice. If any of them have grievances, they can bring them directly to me tomorrow. Tonight, you rest." The convoy cleared the grand iron gates of the outer perimeter, where dozens of heavily armored Blackwood guards stood at rigid attention. Unlike the guards at Bloodmoon, who wore mismatched leather armor and carried themselves with arrogant laziness, these warriors moved with precise, military discipline. As Valen’s vehicle passed, every single soldier slammed a clenched fist over their heart in a synchronized, thunderous salute to their Alpha. The vehicles swept through the sprawling stone courtyards, finally coming to a halt beneath the arched entryway of the main stronghold. Torin was out of the front passenger seat in a flash, opening the door for Valen before moving to assist Nora. But before the Gamma could even extend a hand, Valen stepped out into the crisp mountain air, turned, and reached directly into the cabin to take Nora’s hand himself. The night air was freezing, carrying the sharp scent of snow, crushed pine, and iron. As Nora stepped out onto the polished flagstones, she felt the immediate weight of several dozen eyes on her. Guards, high-ranking household staff, and night-shift attendants lined the broad stone steps of the entryway. News of the Alpha’s sudden, unexpected return from the Solstice Gathering had clearly traveled fast, but nothing could have prepared the staff for what they were seeing. Their ruthless, untouchable Alpha was walking slowly, deliberately matching the small steps of a thin, fragile-looking girl wearing his personal winter coat. Whispers swept through the ranks like wind through autumn leaves. Nora felt the sharp, probing stares—curiosity, confusion, and subtle disdain radiating from some of the higher-ranking staff members standing near the double doors. She instinctively shrank back, trying to minimize her presence. Valen felt her hesitation instantly. Without pausing his stride, he shifted his arm, wrapping it securely around her waist and pulling her flush against his side. The subtle move was a massive public declaration: *She is protected.* An older woman standing at the head of the entrance steps bowed deeply as they approached. She was dressed in a sharp, immaculate grey wool dress, her iron-grey hair pulled back into a tight, severe bun. Her sharp blue eyes swept over Nora, registering the dirty shoes, the pale skin, and the lack of an active wolf aura, but her expression remained strictly professional. "Welcome back, Alpha Vane," the woman said, her voice crisp and clear. "Mrs. Gable," Valen acknowledged, stopping in front of her. "This is Nora. She is my mate and the Luna of this pack. You will treat her authority as equal to my own." A silent shockwave rippled through the gathered servants. Mrs. Gable’s eyebrows twitched upward by a fraction of a millimeter—the only tell of her utter astonishment—before she bowed even lower than before, sweeping her skirt out. "It is an honor to welcome you to the Blackwood Citadel, Lady Nora," Mrs. Gable said smoothly, her tone entirely respectful. "Your private quarters in the Alpha's wing have been heated, and a light meal has been prepared." "Thank you," Nora said softly, her voice carrying a quiet grace that belied her ragged appearance. Valen guided her past the heavy iron-oak doors and into the grand foyer. The interior of the stronghold was breathtaking—high vaulted stone ceilings, burning hearths the size of small rooms, and massive banners bearing the black wolf crest of the Vane bloodline. They ascended a broad, winding stone staircase that led up into the private upper spires, leaving the whispering staff and guards far behind. The higher they climbed, the quieter the stronghold became, until the only sound was the soft tread of their boots against thick velvet runners. Valen stopped in front of a massive pair of carved oak doors at the end of a private gallery lined with ancestral portraits. "These are my personal quarters," Valen explained, placing his hand against the heavy brass handle. "Your suite is connected directly to mine through an inner study. You will have complete privacy, but I am only a door away if you need anything." He pushed the doors open, revealing a vast, dimly lit master suite anchored by a roaring stone fireplace. The room smelled of cedar and lavender, furnished with rich dark woods, plush velvet seating, and a massive bed draped in heavy furs. On a low table near the fire sat a silver tray laden with fresh bread, roasted meats, hot soup, and fruit. Nora stepped onto the soft rug, her tired feet practically sinking into the pile. She looked around the warm, opulent space, feeling completely out of place, as if she were stepping into a dream that might shatter at any second. Valen stood near the threshold, keeping a respectful distance now that they were alone. He removed his outer gloves, his eyes watching her with a quiet, intense tenderness. "Eat what you can, Nora," he said softly. "The baths are through the door on the left. The staff has placed fresh clothes for you inside." Nora turned to face him, clutching his coat tightly against her chest. "Valen... why are you doing all of this for me? You don't even know me." Valen walked forward slowly, stopping just a foot away. He reached out, his warm knuckles lightly brushing against her temple, smoothing back a lock of her hair. "I know that you survived years in the dark without letting it ruin your heart," he said quietly, his voice thick with raw emotion. "I know that my wolf, after thirty years of silence, roared the moment you breathed near me. And I know that I am going to spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to scrub another floor, fear another threat, or doubt your worth again." Nora’s eyes welled with heat, a single warm tear escaping and trailing down her cheek. Valen caught the tear gently with his thumb, wiping it away before bringing his hand back to his side. "Sleep well, my Luna," he murmured. "Tomorrow, we begin." He stepped back and quietly pulled the heavy double doors shut, leaving Nora alone in the warm, golden light of her new reality.
