A PETRIFIED PRISONER scanned the cafeteria for a safe place to sit, his hands nearly shaking the mashed potatoes off his tray. “Sit here, kid.” Jon Polansky said, patting the seat next to him. His cellmate, Ren DeJesus, sat on the other side of Polansky, giving the kid a skeptical glare. Ren was not sure he wanted to cozy up to the young inmate who had been assaulted on a regular basis by his frightening roommate. Ren still had no idea how close he and Victor Garbow were connected. The two had never spoken, nor did anyone else in the penitentiary, for fear of irritating Victor’s cellmate. “Thanks,” Victor whispered, as he shoveled his watery mashed potatoes into his mouth.
