Chapter Ten: His Weakness, His Fury
Luna barely had time to breathe after the attack in Liam’s penthouse. Her mind was still spinning from the gunshots, from the blood on Liam’s skin, from the way he held her like she was the only thing keeping him grounded.
But now… he was pacing.
His shirt was gone, replaced by a fresh black one stretched across his chest. His jaw was set, his eyes cold as ice. Luna felt her stomach twist — she knew that expression.
Liam was about to do something she wouldn’t like.
“You’re leaving the city tonight,” he said without turning around.
Her heart stopped. “What?”
“You heard me.” His voice was flat, controlled. Too controlled.
“You’re not safe here. I’m sending you to a secure location with my men until this is dealt with.”
“No,” she whispered.
He faced her slowly. “This isn’t a discussion.”
Her fear from earlier ignited into something hotter — anger.
“You can’t make that decision for me!”
“Yes,” he snapped. “I can. And I will.”
She stepped forward, trembling but determined.
“Liam, I’m not running away. I refuse to hide while people come after me because of you.”
His eyes flashed with something dangerous. “Because of me? You think this is about me?”
“You said it yourself!” she fired back. “They want to hurt you — and I’m just a way for them to do it.”
His jaw clenched so hard she thought it might c***k.
“You’re not ‘a way,’ Luna,” he growled. “You’re the one thing I can’t lose.”
She froze.
He ran both hands through his hair, frustration simmering under the surface. “You don’t understand. When I saw that man outside… when he tried to break into my home… I almost lost my mind. If anything had happened to you—”
“Nothing did,” she whispered. “Because of you.”
“That’s exactly why you need to go!” he shouted, voice echoing through the penthouse.
Luna flinched — not because she was afraid of him, but because she had never seen him lose control like this.
She stepped closer, her voice low. “Liam… I’m not leaving you.”
He stared at her like she had just torn down every wall he had left.
“Luna,” he said, breathing hard, “I don’t want you anywhere near this. It’s ugly. It’s bloody. It’s—”
“It’s your world,” she said softly. “And I’m already in it.”
He closed the distance between them in two steps, his chest rising and falling rapidly.
“You think you’re strong enough to handle this?” he whispered, almost to himself. “You think you can survive in my world of enemies and weapons and death?”
She lifted her chin. “I survived today.”
A slow, dark, almost painful smile tugged at the corner of his lips.
“You drive me insane, Luna Hart.”
He grabbed her wrist — gently, but firmly — pulling her closer until she could feel every breath he took.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing to me,” he whispered. “What you make me feel.”
Her heart thudded against her ribs. “Then tell me.”
His grip tightened. His eyes dropped to her lips.
For a moment, she thought he would kiss her — hard, angry, desperate.
Instead, he released her abruptly and turned away.
“Pack your things,” he said hoarsely. “You’re leaving.”
“No.”
He turned back. “Luna—”
“No,” she repeated, stepping closer. “I’m staying. With you.”
He swallowed hard, his control slipping.
Her bravery — or foolishness — was breaking him.
“Why?” His voice was raw. “Why would you choose this? Choose me?”
She met his gaze without fear.
“Because you protect me. Because you care. Because I feel safe with you. And…” She blushed, looking away. “Because I don’t want to be anywhere else.”
Silence.
Then he moved — quick, sudden — caging her against the wall with his hands on either side of her head.
“You have no idea,” he breathed, “what you’re doing to me.”
Her breath trembled. “Then show me.”
His eyes darkened, a storm ready to break.
But instead of kissing her, he forced himself to step back again, chest rising fitfully.
“I can’t,” he whispered. “Not like this. Not when I’m this close to losing you.”
The tension between them crackled like electricity.
The war outside wasn’t the only one happening tonight.
Liam Moretti was fighting himself —
and losing.
