The car came to a stop in front of the building, and Caden stepped out first. He turned to offer me his hand, and without thinking, I took it. His grip was firm, unyielding, as he helped me out of the car.
“This is your new life, Ashley,” he said, his voice soft but firm. “And you will never have to face it alone.”
I stood there for a moment, looking up at the massive building. It felt like the start of something big, something life-changing. But I knew one thing for certain: I was no longer the victim. I was in control now. And I was going to take everything I deserved.
Caden’s grip on my hand tightened slightly as if sensing the uncertainty still lingering within me. I couldn’t help but glance back at the car, the vehicle that had transported me into this strange new life. My heart pounded in my chest, a mixture of nerves and excitement swirling within me. The weight of the past the betrayal, the pain, the anger was still fresh, but I could feel it slowly dissipating in the presence of Caden’s unwavering strength.
He led me up the steps to the imposing entrance, the door opening with a smooth creak as we stepped inside. The interior was even more lavish than I had anticipated dark marble floors gleamed beneath the soft, golden lighting. Ornate chandeliers hung from the high ceilings, casting a soft glow over the expanse of the foyer.
It was beautiful, yet cold, and somehow fitting for the man who owned it.
“This is your home now,” Caden said, his voice almost like a promise as he guided me further into the building.
I nodded slowly, unsure of what to say. I had no place here. My thoughts were still in disarray, caught between the whirlwind of emotions that had taken hold of me since I stepped into this world. I had just escaped my old life my marriage to Levi, the fake sister who had once been my closest confidante, and the betrayal that had led to my death.
I had died once, but now... now I was alive. And this was my second chance.
Caden led me through a set of double doors into a grand sitting room. The furniture was luxurious, with soft velvet sofas and chairs arranged around a large fireplace, its flames flickering with warmth. The space felt welcoming in an intimidating way as if it was designed to draw you in but also remind you of your place.
He gestured to one of the sofas. “Sit. I’ll have something brought to you.”
I took a seat, my body still tense from the overwhelming shift in my life. Caden moved to a nearby table, his movements purposeful as he grabbed a glass of scotch. He turned to me, his gaze assessing, calculating.
“Tell me, Ashley. What do you want?” His voice was low, serious.
I blinked at the question, taken aback. “What do you mean?”
He stepped closer, his eyes never leaving mine. “What do you want now? You’re no longer bound by their lies. You’re no longer tied to the past. What will you do with your freedom?”
His words hit me like a slap to the face. I had never considered it before not in any serious way. What did I want? For so long, I had been trapped in a cage of my own making, defined by the expectations of others, and by the roles I was forced into. I hadn’t even thought about what I wanted out of life.
Caden’s eyes softened ever so slightly as he watched my reaction. He took a step back, offering me space, as if giving me the time I needed to think.
“I want to make them pay,” I said, the words slipping from my mouth before I even realized what I was saying. The pain, the anger, the resentment all of it surged to the forefront. Levi, Kelly, the life they had stolen from me, the future they had tried to destroy. “I want them to suffer. I want them to know what it feels like to lose everything.”
Caden’s lips curled into a small, knowing smile. “Then you will.”
His tone was cold, almost detached, but there was something in his eyes a glimmer of something darker. He was the kind of man who didn’t just talk about vengeance. He made it happen.
“I’ll help you,” he continued, his voice steady. “But you need to understand something. The road to revenge is never easy. It will be messy. It will be brutal. And I won’t stop until I’ve seen them broken.”
I swallowed, the weight of his words settling over me. I had never been a fighter. I had been too weak, too afraid to stand up for myself. But now, now that I had been given this second chance, I wasn’t going to let them get away with what they did. I wouldn’t be weak anymore.
“I’m ready,” I said, surprising myself with the conviction in my voice.
Caden’s smile deepened, and he nodded in approval. “Good. You’re exactly where you need to be.”
There was no going back. My old life, the one with Levi and Kelly, was dead. I was reborn in this world of shadows and power. And now, I was going to take what was mine.
