Chapter 19January, 20, 1852: The Reunion Charles did not make it back for Christmas. Joshua caught small pox just after Thanksgiving and nearly died. He was only beginning to recover by the New Year. On the morning of January 19, 1852 Charles was standing on a footstool, stocking fabric onto an upper shelf when he heard the door open. Looking over his shoulder he saw Francis Hicks. He stepped down and extended his hand. “Hello Chief, it’s good to see you,” Charles said with a smile. His face then tensed when he saw the suffering in the chief’s eyes. “Charles, I think you’d better come to the reserve quick. Sally has taken a turn for the worse.
