Chapter 14Home from the Goldfields Traveling by horse without the burdensome wagons proved much quicker, and Charles arrived in Town of Kansas the last Sunday of May, 1850. He stabled his horse and then rushed over to Sarah’s house. She partially opened the door. “Yes,” she said softly. “May I help you?” “Yes,” he said, “I was hoping you could give some food to this tired and weary traveler.” Sarah continued to stare at him questioningly. It was only then that Charles realized that he had not shaved or had a haircut in almost a year. When he began to laugh, Sarah’s eyes begin to sparkle. “Charles!
