Chapter 9 - The Secret of the Island

1096 Words
However, Queenie quickly suppressed her craving, instead giving me a disdainful glare and turning her head away. Lillian, on the other hand, occasionally glanced at Harold, who was still busy by the sea, with a hint of regret in her eyes. "Don't worry, Harold will surely find something to eat. He's not worse than that guy!" Queenie said, still holding high expectations for Harold. The two women sat by the campfire, watching Harold flipping and searching along the seashore from a distance, hoping he would find something to eat. As they waited, their stomachs growled, and hunger consumed them. Meanwhile, on our side, we had already eaten. The fish on this island were naturally fresh and uncontaminated. I grilled the fish to perfection, releasing a burst of delicious aroma. The combination of the fish's fragrance and the refreshing bamboo juice made the experience even more enjoyable than having a feast in the city. Mandy and I were happily indulging in laughter and joy. Seeing our enjoyment, Queenie and Lillian could only pick up firewood, throwing them into the fire one by one. Their mood was extremely irritable. "I'm so angry! That bastard is doing this on purpose! What's so great about it?" Queenie gritted her silver teeth, snapping several branches in her hand. Lillian seemed a bit silent, only glancing at us with envy and a trace of regret. After being upset for a while, and when the sun was about to set, Harold finally returned from the seaside. When the two women saw his dejected appearance with empty hands, their hearts skipped a beat. However, they couldn't help asking, "Did you find anything?" "Oh, don't mention it. Christopher just gave me a beating. My head hurts, and my hands and feet aren't flexible. I almost caught some big fish several times, but they slipped away!" Harold pouted, looking like he considered himself unlucky. This guy was good at finding excuses, and now he shifted the blame to me, claiming his head hurt because I hit him. Seriously, did I give him a concussion that rendered him unable to take care of himself? "How can this be? What should we have for dinner tonight?" Queenie started to get anxious. Lillian, looking at Harold, sighed, "Never mind, today we still caught some small fish. Let's eat it and drink some water to fill our stomachs." "Yeah, let's do it. Look, I also caught something today!" Harold proudly opened his palms, revealing two almond-sized scallops. "These scallops are excellent. The meat inside is tender and nutritious!" The moment Harold spoke, Queenie was so angry that she wanted to slap him. The scallops in high-end restaurants were much bigger, and a dozen of them wouldn't be enough to eat. These two small things couldn't even feed a child. "Don't worry; today was just bad luck for me. Tomorrow will be better. I'll go to the woods to look around tomorrow." Harold, seeing the cold attitudes of the two women, hurriedly explained with a forced smile. "I hope you'll do better tomorrow. Otherwise, we'll become a joke in front of Chris." Lillian said, her eyes occasionally glancing in our direction. At this moment, Mandy and I had already eaten our fill. We lay on the beach satisfied, and even the three grilled fish we prepared were more than we could finish, so we threw the leftovers into the fire, creating a burnt aroma. The smell reached them, and their campsite became even more dismal and frustrated. Frowning, Queenie and Lillian continued to throw firewood into the pit. The evening was approaching, and Harold's true colors seemed to be on the verge of exposure. Feeling content, I pulled Mandy up, ready to leave. The sun was starting to set, and taking advantage of the sunset, I wanted to take a walk on the beach. Maybe I could find other survivors? But as soon as I stood up, Mandy looked at me with suspicion and said, "Finally willing to leave? Every time you come over, you keep staring at that Queenie. Do you have feelings for her?" "Impossible! She's indeed very pretty, but she looks down on me too much. I'm holding back my anger!" I explained, not saying much, and quickly walked ahead. The coastline extended to the southeast, and I haven't had time to explore during this time. This time, I intend to walk a bit more and familiarize myself with the surrounding terrain, and maybe sometimes this familiarity with the terrain can save my life. However, there was a surprising discovery soon. About fifteen minutes later, I noticed a person was lying on the beach in front of us! Seeing this person from a distance, I had a bad feeling because the person's lying posture was very strange, and there was no movement at all. This person was likely dead! Mandy was a bit scared and dared not approach, so I had to walk over with a brave face. Soon, I arrived in front of the dead person. He was wearing a black and red uniform, and the clothes were already tattered, as if they had suffered from the storm. The corpse didn't have a foul smell, and the face looked similar to a living person, indicating that the time of death wasn't too long ago. It made me feel a bit desolate. We were all stranded on this island, and he had already died. Would I be next? Taking a deep breath and pushing away some negative thoughts, I started searching on the corpse. The person's uniform pockets seemed to be bulged, and there seemed to be many things inside. Soon, I found scissors, a pair of pliers, and even a small bottle of alcohol, a roll of bandages, and other items. These items undoubtedly have great use, and they seem to be related to first aid and survival. While it made me happy, it also gave me a bad premonition. What kind of person carried these items with them? Continuing to search on the dead person, I quickly found an ID! This dead person turned out to be from the rescue team! Was he sent from the outside to rescue us? We have been waiting for rescue here, wondering why the rescue hasn't come yet. It turned out they also encountered trouble! Weren't the rescue team members all well-trained professionals? How could they encounter trouble? Was it an accident? If not, then why? I felt a huge shadow looming over me, and suddenly there was a feeling of suffocation and dizziness! What secrets did this island hold?
