Chapter 8

1587 Words
“This life,” Ryan said, gesturing vaguely at the darkened forest around them. “The fighting, the danger. I wanted you to be safe, to have a normal life. But I failed you. I failed everyone.” Adriana’s eyes narrowed as she leaned forward, her voice sharp. “You think saying that changes anything? That it erases what you’ve done?” Ryan didn’t flinch under her glare. “No,” he said simply. “But it’s the truth.” She laughed bitterly, running a hand through her dark hair. “The truth? That’s rich coming from you. You’ve lied to me about everything, Ryan. Everything. And now you want me to believe you care about my safety? Give me a break.” His jaw tightened, but he didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he turned his gaze to the flickering fire between them, the flames casting shadows across his face. “I care more than you know,” he said finally, his voice low. “Which is why I’m going to fix this.” Adriana scoffed. “Fix it? How? By hiding in the woods forever? By letting Kesha and your old buddies run wild while we sit here doing nothing?” “We’re not doing nothing,” Ryan snapped, his voice rising for the first time. His eyes locked on hers, the intensity in them startling her. “We’re planning. We’re preparing. And when the time is right, we’re going to end this. For good.” Adriana crossed her arms, leaning back against the log she was sitting on. “You’ve been saying that for days. I’m done waiting, Ryan. If you’re too scared to take action, then I’ll do it myself.” “Don’t,” he said firmly, his tone leaving no room for argument. “You don’t understand what you’re dealing with.” “Then make me understand,” she shot back. “Because from where I’m standing, it looks like you’re more afraid of Kesha than you are of losing me.” His expression darkened, his fists clenching at his sides. For a moment, she thought he might explode, but instead, he took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down. “Fine,” he said through gritted teeth. “You want to take action? Then let’s take action. Together.” Adriana raised an eyebrow, her skepticism clear. “What are you suggesting?” “We set a trap,” Ryan said, his voice steady now. “We lure Kesha and the others out into the open and take them down. But we do it smart. No rushing in, no reckless moves. We plan every detail, and we don’t leave anything to chance.” She studied him for a long moment, searching his face for any sign of hesitation. “And what makes you think they’ll fall for it?” she asked finally. “Kesha’s not stupid.” “Because I know her,” Ryan replied. “I know how she thinks. And I know exactly how to bait her.” Adriana hesitated, the firelight reflecting in her golden eyes. She didn’t trust him—not completely—but she also knew he was her best chance at taking Kesha down. “Alright,” she said reluctantly. “But if this goes south, it’s on you.” Ryan nodded. “Fair enough.” By the time the sun rose the next morning, the plan was in motion. Ryan paced back and forth in the clearing, his mind racing as he went over every detail. Adriana stood nearby, arms crossed, watching him with a mixture of curiosity and doubt. “So,” she said, breaking the silence. “What’s the bait?” Ryan stopped pacing and turned to face her. “Me,” he said simply. Adriana frowned. “What do you mean, you?” “I’m going to offer Kesha a deal,” he explained. “A fake one, obviously. I’ll tell her I want to make peace, that I’m tired of running and ready to join her again.” Adriana’s eyes narrowed. “And you think she’ll believe that?” “She’ll want to believe it,” Ryan said. “Kesha’s smart, but she’s also arrogant. She thinks she’s won, that I’m desperate. She’ll come to the meeting thinking she’s in control.” “And when she shows up?” Adriana asked. “That’s where you come in,” Ryan replied. “You’ll be hiding nearby, ready to strike. We hit them hard and fast before they have a chance to react.” Adriana nodded slowly, her mind racing as she processed the plan. “And what about the others?” she asked. “The ones working with her?” “There will probably be two or three of them,” Ryan said. “But if we stick to the plan, we can take them out before they become a problem.” Adriana frowned, her unease evident. “It’s risky.” “Everything about this is risky,” Ryan said bluntly. “But it’s our best shot.” She sighed, running a hand through her hair. “Fine. Let’s do it. But if you screw this up, Ryan…” “I won’t,” he said, cutting her off. “I promise.” The trap was set. The meeting spot was an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city, its crumbling walls and shattered windows giving it an eerie, desolate feel. Ryan stood in the center of the open space, his posture relaxed but his senses on high alert. He could feel Adriana’s presence nearby, hidden in the shadows above, her golden eyes watching his every move. He didn’t have to wait long. The sound of footsteps echoed through the space, followed by a low, familiar voice. “Ryan,” Kesha said, her tone dripping with mockery. “I have to admit, I didn’t expect to hear from you.” Ryan turned to face her, his expression unreadable. “Kesha,” he said evenly. “Thanks for coming.” She stepped into the light, her sharp features and piercing eyes as intimidating as ever. Behind her, two figures emerged—her loyal henchmen, their expressions cold and menacing. “You’ve got some nerve,” Kesha said, circling him slowly. “After everything you’ve done, after all the lies… you really think I’d believe you want to make peace?” Ryan shrugged, his tone casual. “Believe what you want. I’m tired of running, Kesha. I’m tired of fighting. I just want this to end.” Her lips curved into a predatory smile. “Oh, it’s going to end, alright. But not the way you think.” She lunged at him without warning, her claws flashing in the dim light. Ryan dodged her attack, his movements quick and precise. “Now!” he shouted, his voice echoing through the warehouse. Adriana sprang into action, leaping down from her hiding spot with a feral growl. She landed between Kesha and her henchmen, her claws extended, her golden eyes blazing with power. Kesha snarled, her expression twisting with rage. “You,” she spat, her gaze fixed on Adriana. “I should’ve killed you when I had the chance.” “You can try,” Adriana shot back, her tone cold. The fight erupted in an instant. Adriana moved with a speed and precision that surprised even herself, the power of the ancient wolf surging through her veins. She dodged Kesha’s attacks with ease, her claws slashing through the air as she fought back with everything she had. Ryan focused on the henchmen, his movements swift and calculated. He managed to take one of them down with a well-placed strike, but the other proved more formidable, forcing him to stay on the defensive. Adriana let out a fierce cry as she landed a devastating blow on Kesha, her claws raking across the older woman’s side. Kesha staggered back, blood dripping from the wound, but her expression was defiant. “You think this changes anything?” Kesha sneered, her voice dripping with venom. “You’re just like him. Weak. Pathetic.” Adriana’s eyes narrowed, her fury burning even brighter. “I’m nothing like him,” she said, her voice low and deadly. She lunged at Kesha again, determined to finish the fight. But before she could land the final blow, Ryan’s voice cut through the chaos. “Adriana, stop!” he shouted. She froze, her claws inches from Kesha’s throat. “What are you doing?” she demanded, turning to glare at him. Ryan’s face was pale, his expression one of shock. “She knows something,” he said, his voice trembling slightly. “Something about me.” Kesha let out a low, bitter laugh, blood staining her teeth. “That’s right,” she said, her voice weak but triumphant. “You don’t even know, do you? The truth about who you really are.” Adriana’s heart sank as she looked between them, her mind racing. “What is she talking about?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Ryan didn’t answer. He couldn’t. His eyes were locked on Kesha, his expression one of pure dread. “You’ll find out soon enough,” Kesha said, her smile widening despite the pain evident in her voice. “And when you do… you’ll wish you’d killed me when you had the chance.” Adriana turned to Ryan, her voice trembling with anger and confusion. “What is she talking about, Ryan? What aren’t you telling me?”
