CHAPTER TWO Something was wrong but she did not know what. She tried to focus on her surroundings but she could not place them. She began to panic but knew that was not going to get her anyway. All she had to do was open her eyes and everything would be okay, but her eyes would not open. She tried to speak but she couldn't. Panic looked good right about now. She could feel her heart rate rising but still it was not working, so she stopped fighting and drifted into the abyss.  *** Tony paced up and down the halls, Alex was crushing again and the doctors were trying to bring her back. It had been a month since the accident and she had been in a coma the whole time. They had done multiple surgeries to save her life but that all ended two weeks ago and still she was not waking up. The doctors did not understand why. She had been moved from the ICU and he had her put in one of their VIP recovery suites but nothing was working. Once in a while she would crush, her heart rate would go so high and then stop. Each time the doctors would bring her back.  Tony kept pacing, the coffee cup he was holding seemed to be the only thing keeping him grounded right now. His mind drifted to the night of the accident, everything had gone wrong and it was his fault. When he had received the call of the accident from a random stranger he had broken down inside but knew he had to find her and be strong for her. So he had rushed to the hospital in the rain and when he got there and couldn't find her he almost screamed. When Tony finally saw Alex on that bed surrounded by doctors trying to save her, he had prayed for the first time in a long time. He begged and bargained with God to save her. He had spent the next eight hours pacing, crying and praying again. When he finally got to see her after the eight hours of surgery she was broken. He couldnt be strong anymore, he wept out loud and the doctors just let him. Over the two weeks that followed he had practically lived in the hospital. They gave him a stretcher bed so he could sleep in the room with her, his assistant had brought him a bag of clothes and he showered there and ate at the hospital cafeteria. His Vice president at the company took over for him. Everytime they took Alex to surgery was a whole new level of torture, but it had to be done.  Over the last couple weeks doctors had advised him that she was not getting better and chances were she would never get better. They advised him to sign the Do Not Resuscitate form that would mean that next time she crushed they would let her die. He could not do it. This is not how their story would end. He would not give up on her. She was his world, the world he had destroyed. He would never let her go.  “Mr. Mallon?” Tony snapped back from his thoughts and looked at the person speaking to him. “Yes, Dr Brown,” he said to Alex’s lead surgeon. “Your wife is stable for now. She is still not awake,” Dr Brown said in her tone without any hope left. “Thank you doctor,'' Tony said as he walked into the room where his wife was in. He looked at her, her skin was almost white like the sheets she was lying on. Alex was not one of those classically beautiful girls on social media or Tv. She was average looking but she was beautiful. She had brown eyes with a ring of blue around the irises. Her hair  was medium length and raven black. Her body was a bit on the thick side, with hips for days. He loved her shape. She was not slim or thin but he loved her body. Tony smiled as he thought of the first time he had seen her. He walked toward her bed and sat down on the chair next to her. He took her hand in his and it felt cold and frail. She was beautiful, her eyes, her smile, the way she laughed, everything about her was amazing. She was also very intelligent and thoughtful, emotional and clingy. Tony almost laughed, but instead he broke down to tears . He laid his head on the bed next to her and sobbed, so much so that when she opened her eyes he did not notice. *** Alex opened her eyes and blinked, once then twice. She did not recognise where she was. She tried to move but her whole body was in pain. She decide to only move her eyes. The room had white walls and large windows at the far wall. She could see machines and tubes from the corner of her eye but nothing seemed familiar, and what was that smell? Was someone crying? She looked down and saw a head full of hair laid next to her. Why was this man crying? She tried to speak but only a crooked sound came out . The man next to her suddenly looked up. She did not know who he was but he seemed confused and relieved to see her. She tried to say something again but her throat hurt and she winced. “Don't speak, i will get the doctor,” the man who had just been crying next to her said with so much excitement in his voice. He ran out shouting for a doctor Brown. Alex then realised a few things. She was in the hospital, she did not know how or when she got here and why she could not speak. What was surprising is that she was very calm. She also had a headache and she was tired. She decided to sleep for a while. When Tony entered her room again with the team of doctors behind him he found Alex lying there with her eyes closed. He began to panic and feel a certain level of fear he had never experienced before. “Is she back in a coma?” he asked, trying so hard to remain under control. “No, she is just sleeping,” doctor Brown said smiling. “Go home Mr. Mallon, take a shower, eat something not cooked for sick people and come back later.” “No, I cannot leave her, what if she wakes up again?” Tony protested. “We will call you. Right now we need to run some tests and she needs to rest. Your wife has been through a lot. She needs you strong and looking normal when she wakes up” Tony nodded. He walked over to Alex and gave her a kiss on the forehead. The doctor was right, there was nothing he could do for her. He would go home, change and eat, maybe he would sleep for a while. He would get her those roses she liked so much and then come back to see her. Tony left though with a heavy heart, he knew he had to. *** Alex opened her eyes for the second time that day. She felt much better than she had when she woke up the first time, there was less pain. She looked around and saw someone dressed in scrubs and a white court typing something on their tablet. She cleared her throat and the person turned to look at her. “Oh Mrs Mallon you are awake,” the lady in the white coat said with a bright smile on her face. Who is Mrs Mallon? Was that her name? Alex realised another thing, she did not remember anything, not even her name. She began to panic and the monitor began to beep really loudly. “Try and calm down dear, i will get the doctor,” the nurse ran out. She came back almost instantly with another person. “Mrs Mallon, l am doctor Brown, try and calm down for me please. You were hurt in an accident and you are at Jupiter White Memorial Hospital. Nurse, inject two ccs of pethidine. This will help you relax.” the doctor smiled at her. Alex finally felt calm. She tried to speak but failed again. Her throat really hurt. “Nurse give her some water for her throat please.” After drinking small sips of water she could finally speak, “what happened to me? Why am I here? And who is Mrs Mallon?” the doctor and the nurse both looked surprised at that last question, “Page neuro,” Dr Brown said, turning to look at the nurse who basically ran out of the room.  Doctor Brown then explained to her that she had been in an accident a month ago and then went through several surgeries and was in a coma for four weeks. While she was still explaining all her injuries another doctor walked in with the nurse. He looked handsome and had kind eyes. “Hello, I am Dr. Jacobs, head of neuro. I am going to examine you okay?” Alex just nodded. Thirty minutes later the results were back. She had amnesia but the doctors seemed optimistic that her memories would return “The brain is notorious, they may return or not,” Dr Jacobs had said, still smiling at her. She had felt better. Now she was just sitting in her room with nothing to do but stare at the ceiling. This room was nice though, now that she could appreciate it. She looked outside her window and saw him. , the man from earlier. He looked different, he looked cleaned up, in a soft gray suit with a dozen red, long stemmed roses in one hand. He was talking to one of the doctors and did not look happy. He  suddenly turned and looked at her. When their eyes met, he smiled at her, showing the most perfect teeth she had ever seen. That beard looked good on him too. He was coming over , what was she going to do? While she debated on a strategy to deal with this handsome stranger, he came and stood next to her still smiling. He placed the flowers on her  bedside table. “Good evening Mrs Mallon,” he said in a deep voice that vibrated through her whole body and she just blushed like an i***t.
