Chapter 2

Takeo slouched against his couch, deep in thought. A growl or two occasionally escaped his throat. He was in his early thirties but appeared to be in his forties. He was a powerful looking wolf with a permanent scowl etched on his face. He was plain, thickset and he had a large forehead. The only attractive feature Takeo had were his eyes; deep green beautiful and soulful eyes that made whoever it was fixated on lost in them . He was a very fast wolf, one of the fastest in Achilles' pack. Albeit his physical appearances, he was a very cunning and intelligent wolf who never seemed to lack wits. This was the quality that had endeared him to Alpha Lucian when they were younger still and which made him stand the Beta of Achilles pack. Takeo had been chosen as the Beta when Lucian became the Alpha. Both of them worked well. Takeo assisted the Alpha in running the Pack and seeing to pack politics. He was greatly troubled and worried, he stood from the couch and paced anxiously around his villa. His brother's daughter, Eva had gone missing a fortnight ago and reports reaching the pack from the scouts sent to find her had indicated that the Feral pack had her. Takeo had begun instructing and assembling wolves whom he wanted to join him in extracting her but the Alpha had halted them, saying that the matter needed deliberation and caution. He remembered asking the Alpha what sort of deliberation they were embarking on. Lucian had been evasive, he spoke on the dangers of springing a surprise attack on a pack. "It is a declaration of werewolf war", Takeo had remembered him saying. He didn't believe his Alpha; the fiery and ruthless one was talking about negotiations. He had argued that the Feral pack had made the first war attempt when they kidn*pped a member of their pack. Lucian had paid him no heed. He was the Alpha and his decision was final. Takeo instinctively knew that it was the Luna that had dissuaded Lucian from immediate pursuit. He had always resented the Luna and her "loud mouthed" daughter, Ashina. It was now a fortnight yet the Alpha was still being evasive. He thought furiously of what to do. He couldn't go against Lucian. Takeo began simmering with anger as he struggled to control his wolf form. He couldn't, he let go and winced in pain as his body twisted in an unnatural manner as his bones reshaped. His deep green eyes glittered as he took off speedily towards the woods. He went on a hunting prowl, he tore several hounds that stood on his path to shreds and raced on . Takeo felt free, he felt very powerful and unstoppable in his wolf form . He bent and howled loudly into the night. He sniffed human blood not very far from where he was. His pulse raced and he traced the scent to the foot of the huge pine tree. He saw a little boy of not more than seven years lying there, unconscious. He struggled to control himself; he knew the laws. He couldn't harm a human, yet, the smell of the pure human blood was enticing. He looked at the boy again. The innocent and beautiful face made something in him snap. He matched towards the boy and placed his wanting fangs on his warm neck. He took a little bite and stepped back. He couldn't devour the boy. He looked in mortification at what he had done. He raced out and afterwards thought he heard a whimper of pain from the boy but he dismissed it. He howled and raced back to his logde. On reaching, He turned back into a human. Bare, he sought his clothes out and mentally blocked what he had done in the woods out of his mind to prevent his mate from seeing through him. He took several calming breaths and went to his bed to join his mate, Amelia. He lay still on his bed "What bothers you?", Amelia's voice startled him. He thought she was asleep. She was everything to Takeo, his world revolved around her. He drew her close; "everything is fine, my love" Amelia turned to face him; she perceived foreign blood on him, was it human? She hoped not. She tried to look into his mind but it was blocked. She cupped his worried looking face in her hands albeit he always had a worrying look, she knew this was serious and way different. She knew he was worried about Eva, his niece. She had been with the girl when she was taken although she never told anyone this. She didn't want to be probed as to why she didn't raise alarm or give chase, since only two lone wolves had taken Eva. She was no fragile wolf, she was a fierce and strong wolf. What no one else had known was that she had secretly loathed the girl, Eva. She hated the much attention Takeo gave her. She never wanted to share her mate with anyone, niece or not. "Tell me, what bothers you" Takeo looked into the eyes of the woman he had given his heart to. He longed to share his worries with her but he just could not do so. He didn't want to drag her into issues that he best resolved alone. "Forget it, Amelia, I'll take care of it, I promise" "If you say so, but be cautious, do not harm yourself". Takeo groaned inwardly; why was everyone reminding him of caution. He was Takeo, a warrior wolf who could handle anybody and anything. He gathered Amelia into his arms and fell into a deep troubled slumber. "Ash" a hand vigorously shook her, she muttered incoherent words. "Happy birthday, Ash" the voice boomed. Ashina opened her eyes to see the laughing face of her best friend, Jorah. "Ash, wake up", "I'm up," Ashina said irritably. She hated being jolted from sleep, but this was Jorah. She watched him as he placed a well wrapped bundle beside her bed. She stood up and threw a tank top on. "What's up"? Jorah asked "You look horrible" Ashina ignored him and went on to balm her hands with ointment before pulling on a glove. She and Jorah had been best friends since she was eight. They had met when Achilles' pack had gone on a hunting spree. Jorah was from the phoenix pack, which had been attacked by hounds. They had found him and rescued him with other members of his pack. They were given permission by the Alpha to join Achilles pack. Jorah and Ashina had formed a very tight bond ever since. Jorah already had a mate; Ruelle, a very strong wolf who was rapidly in wolf rank as a prominent warrior. "Ash, what's wrong? It's"s your birthday; you look gloomy" Jorah"s voice jolted her out of her thoughts. "I feel weighed down on, like there are things I have to do or something" Jorah chuckled "being seventeen has its highs and lows, embrace it". Ashina stood from her bed "I need to clear my head, do you know where Randolph is?" Jorah cast her a look that made Ashina regret asking. "Why are you looking for Rand"? "It's nothing, thanks for the gift, buddy" "I"ll step out a bit" Ashina hurriedly left. Jorah watched on, perplexed and decided to ignore the warning signs he had read. He relaxed on the couch, waiting for her return. He had been very busy of late and they had some catching up to do.
