The next morning, Ivy's mum came into her room with a determined look on her face. "Ivy, I've been thinking about what you said yesterday, and I want to help Maya's family. How about I invite her parents over for a meeting this weekend?" Ivy's eyes widened in surprise. "Really, Mum? That's great!" Her mum nodded. "Yes, really. I think it's important that we support each other in times of need. Let's see if we can work something out." Ivy grinned, feeling proud of her mum for taking action. "I'll ask Maya to bring her parents over on Saturday afternoon." Ivy found Maya in the schoolyard and pulled her aside, looking excited. "Maya, guess what? My mum wants to help your family with some money! She wants to invite your parents over this weekend and offered to support you guys." Maya's eyes widened in surprise, and then a huge grin spread across her face. "Really?! Oh my gosh, Ivy, that's amazing! Thank you so much!" But when Maya got home and told her parents about Ivy's mum's offer, their reaction wasn't what she expected. They looked at each other uncomfortably, and then her dad spoke up. "Maya, why did you have to tell Ivy about our family struggles? We don't want anyone to know about our problems." Maya looked confused. "But Ivy's mum wants to help us, Dad. She's being really kind." Her mum shook her head. "We don't need anyone's help, Maya. We can handle our own problems." Maya felt frustrated. Why weren't her parents happy about Ivy's mum's offer? Maya could see the hesitation in her parents' eyes, but she knew she had to persuade them. "But Mum, Dad, Ivy's mum is genuinely trying to help us. She's not just offering money, she's offering support. And we need it right now." Her parents looked at each other, and then her dad spoke up. "Maya, we appreciate your friend's kindness, but we can't just accept money from someone we barely know." Maya took a deep breath and tried again. "But think about it, Mum, Dad. If we accept Ivy's mum's help, we can pay off some of our debts and get back on our feet faster. And it's not just about the money, it's about the support. We don't have to go through this alone." Her parents looked at each other again, and this time, her mum nodded. "Okay, Maya. We'll go to Ivy's house on the weekend and talk to her mum." Maya grinned, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders. "Thanks, Mum. Thanks, Dad. I know this is the right thing to do." On the weekend, Maya's parents went to Ivy's house, looking a bit nervous. Ivy's mum greeted them warmly and led them into the living room. "Thank you for coming," Ivy's mum said, getting straight to the point. "I want to help you guys out with some money. I know it's not much, but I hope it can help you get back on your feet." Maya's parents looked at each other, then back at Ivy's mum, and nodded. "Thank you," her dad said, his voice filled with gratitude. "We really appreciate it." As they sat in the living room, Maya's dad suddenly looked at Ivy's mum with a curious expression. "Wait a minute," he said, "I think I've seen you before. Did you attend Glory High School with me?" Ivy's mum looked surprised, then a smile spread across her face. "Oh my goodness, yes! I think I remember you now. What a small world! Maya's dad nodded, a huge grin on his face. "That's right! It’s so good to see you after so many years. she replied, laughing. "I can't believe it's been so many years. We were in the same high school, can you believe it?" Maya's eyes widened in shock. "Wow, that's amazing!!" she exclaimed. Ivy's mum nodded, her eyes sparkling with nostalgia. "Yes, it's a small world indeed. I remember you now, you were on the football team, right?" Maya's dad chuckled, looking embarrassed. "Guilty as charged." As the afternoon wore on, Maya's mum felt a sense of relaxation wash over her. She was happy to see her husband and Ivy's mum getting along so well, and the fact that they were old friends made the whole situation feel more comfortable. "I'm so glad we came here today," Maya's mum said, smiling at Ivy's mum. "It's lovely to see you guys getting along so well” Ivy's mum nodded in agreement. "Yes, it's wonderful. And I'm so glad we can support each other in times of need." As they chatted, Ivy's mum got up and headed into the kitchen. "I'll make some French fries and minced meat for us to snack on," she called out. Maya's eyes lit up. "Yay, my favorite!" she exclaimed. Ivy's mum laughed and handed Maya a plate of steaming hot French fries and minced meat. "Here you go, dear. Enjoy!" Maya dug in, savoring the delicious flavors. "Mmm, this is so good!" Ivy's mum smiled, happy to see Maya enjoying her cooking. "I'm glad you like it, dear." As they sat around the table, munching on snacks and chatting, Maya's mum felt a sense of gratitude towards Ivy's mum. She was glad that they had come here today, and that they were getting along so well. "Thank you for everything, Ivy's mum," Maya's mum said, smiling. "You're a wonderful host." Ivy's mum waved her hand dismissively. "It's nothing, dear. I'm just happy to help." As the afternoon drew to a close, Maya's parents thanked Ivy's mum again and promised to stay in touch. Maya and Ivy hugged each other, grinning from ear to ear. "Let's do this again soon," Ivy said, as they pulled away from the hug. Maya nodded enthusiastically. "Definitely!" When they got home, Maya's parents were beaming with happiness. "We can't believe Ivy's mum gave us that much money!" her mum exclaimed. "And her kind gesture, it really touched my heart," her dad added. Maya grinned, feeling happy for her parents. "I know, right? Ivy's mum is the best!" Her dad nodded, a determined look on his face. "You know, I think I'll go see Mr. Dupont tomorrow and pay off the rest of the money we owe him." Her mum's eyes widened in surprise. "Really, Kwame? You think we can afford that?" Her dad nodded confidently. "Yes, I do. With the money Ivy's mum gave us, I think we can finally pay off that debt and start fresh." Maya's mum smiled, looking relieved. "That would be a huge weight off our shoulders." Maya nodded in agreement. "Yeah, and we can finally move on from all this stress and worry." Her dad put his arm around her mum's shoulders. "Exactly, my dear. We'll be okay. We just have to keep moving forward and supporting each other." The next day, Kwame went to Mr. Dupont's house, determined to pay off the rest of the debt. When he arrived, he handed Mr. Dupont the money, and the old man's face lit up with a smile. "Thank you, Kwame," Mr. Dupont said, his voice filled with gratitude. "You have kept your end of the agreement, and I appreciate that." Kwame nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over him. "I'm just glad it's all over," he said. But then, Mr. Dupont's expression turned serious. "Kwame, I have a request to make," he said. Kwame raised an eyebrow, curious. "What is it?" Mr. Dupont hesitated for a moment before speaking. "I want you to bring Maya to live with me and my family." Kwame's eyes widened in shock. "What? Why?" Mr. Dupont's face softened. "I don't have a female child, Kwame. And I've always wanted a daughter to spoil and love. I promise I'll take good care of Maya, and give her everything she needs." Kwame was taken aback by the request. He didn't know what to say or think. He looked at Mr. Dupont, trying to read his intentions. "But...but she's my daughter," Kwame stammered. Mr. Dupont nodded understandingly. "I know, Kwame. And I respect that. But I promise you, I'll be good to her. And it will be a better life for her, I assure you." Kwame was torn. On one hand, he wanted the best for Maya, and if Mr. Dupont could provide that, then maybe it was worth considering. But on the other hand, he couldn't bear the thought of being separated from his daughter. Kwame hesitated, unsure of what to say. He didn't want to make a rash decision, especially when it came to his daughter's well-being. "Mr. Dupont, I appreciate your offer," Kwame said finally. "But I have to think about it. Can I let you know my feedback later?" Mr. Dupont nodded understandingly. "Of course, Kwame. Take all the time you need. I just want what's best for Maya, and if that means living with me, then so be it." Kwame nodded, feeling a sense of relief that he didn't have to make a decision on the spot. "Thank you, Mr. Dupont. I'll definitely let you know my thoughts soon." With that, Kwame left Mr. Dupont's house, his mind racing with thoughts and considerations. He knew he had to make a decision that would be in Maya's best interests, but it was a tough one to make. As he walked home, Kwame couldn't help but think about Maya's happiness and well-being. He knew she deserved the best, and he was willing to do whatever it took to ensure she got it. But could living with Mr. Dupont really be the best for Maya? Kwame just wasn't sure.
