The Alpha Who Didn’t Let Go

I should have run. That was the first thought that hit me. The second was worse. I couldn’t. My body refused to move, rooted to the ground as his presence pressed in on me from every direction. It wasn’t just that he was standing there, it was the way the air itself seemed to shift around him, heavier, darker, like the forest recognized him as something it should fear. And maybe it should. Because every instinct inside me was screaming the same thing. Danger. My fingers curled into the dirt beside me as I slowly pushed myself up, my legs unsteady, my heart still fragile from the bond that had just been ripped out of me. I had nothing left to give. Nothing left to survive another hit. “Stay back,” I said, my voice coming out weaker than I intended. His lips curved slightly. Not a smile. Something sharper. “You don’t get to give me orders,” he replied, his voice low, controlled dangerously calm. He took a step closer. Then another. Each movement is deliberate. Unhurried. Like he already knew I wasn’t going anywhere. And the worst part? He was right. My wolf stirred weakly beneath my skin, confused, unsettled, drawn to him in a way that made no sense after what had just happened. “No…” I whispered, shaking my head as I took a step back. “No, that’s not possible.” Because I knew what I felt. I had just felt it break. That bond. That connection. That mate. It was gone. So this, whatever that was. It had to be wrong. “Say it,” he said. My eyes snapped at him. “What?” His gaze darkened slightly, something unreadable flickering beneath the surface. “You feel it,” he continued, his voice quieter now, but heavier. “Don’t pretend you don’t.” My chest tightened. Because I did. God, I did. It wasn’t the same as before, not soft, not warm, not hopeful. This was different. It wrapped around me like a storm instead of light. Pulled instead of guided. Demanded instead of asked. Terrifying. “I already have a mate,” I said quickly, even though the words tasted wrong. Broken. “You were rejected,” he cut in flatly. The words hit harder than they should have. Like the wound hadn’t even had time to close before he tore it open again. My jaw tightened, humiliation flaring up all over again. “I don’t need you to remind me,” I snapped, my voice sharper now, stronger. For a second, just a second Something in his expression shifted. Interest. Like he hadn’t expected that from me. Good. Because I wasn’t going to stand here and let another man look at me like I was nothing. “I don’t know who you are,” I continued, forcing my voice steady despite the way my heart was racing, “but whatever you think this is, you’re wrong.” Silence followed. Heavy. Intentional. Then he laughed. Low. Soft. Dangerous. “You think I’m wrong?” he asked, tilting his head slightly as he studied me. I swallowed. “Yes.” Another step closer. “Look at me,” he said. I already was. And that was the problem. Because the moment I truly let myself see him Everything inside me reacted. Dark hair. Sharp features. Eyes that didn’t just look they held. Power radiated off him in waves, controlled but unmistakable. This wasn’t just a wolf. This was an Alpha. A powerful one. Stronger than Rowan. Stronger than anyone I had ever been near. And suddenly… I understood why the fear felt so real. “Tell me you feel nothing,” he said quietly. I opened my mouth. Nothing came out. Because I couldn’t lie. Not about this. His gaze dropped briefly to my lips, then back to my eyes, slower this time. More deliberate. “Exactly,” he murmured. My pulse stuttered. “No,” I said again, shaking my head, backing away. “No, this isn’t how it works. You don’t just get another mate. That’s not” “That’s not what you were taught,” he corrected. My breath caught. “Your pack doesn’t tell you everything,” he continued, his tone almost bored now, like this conversation was beneath him. “A rejected bond doesn’t end fate. It just… redirects it.” Redirects. My stomach twisted. “You’re lying.” “I don’t lie about things that matter.” The certainty in his voice made something inside me falter. Because he didn’t sound like he was trying to convince me. He sounded like he already knew I would believe him eventually. “I don’t even know you,” I said, more quietly now. “You will.” The way he said it Not if. When. That same suffocating feeling pressed against my chest again. “I’m not going anywhere with you,” I said firmly. Another pause. Then “Wrong again.” Before I could react, he moved. Fast. Too fast. One second he was a few steps away. Next, he was right in front of me. My breath caught as his hand wrapped around my wrist, firm, unyielding, his touch sending a sharp, electric reaction up my arm. “Let go of me!” I snapped, trying to pull back. It didn’t work. Of course, it didn’t. His grip tightened slightly, not enough to hurt, but enough to remind me how easily he could. “You’re coming with me,” he said. Panic surged. “No, I’m not” “You don’t belong here anymore.” The words hit like a slap. Because deep down… I knew that was true. There was nothing left for me in that pack. No place. No dignity. No future. But that didn’t mean “I don’t belong to you either,” I shot back, meeting his gaze with everything I had left. For a moment… Something dangerous flickered in his eyes. Not anger. Something deeper. Possessive. “You do,” he said quietly. My heart skipped. Because it didn’t sound like a claim. It sounded like a fact. And that terrified me more than anything. I pulled harder, desperation kicking in. “I’m not going anywhere with you,” I repeated. His gaze held mine for a long second. Then slowly He leaned closer. Close enough that I could feel the warmth of his breath against my skin. Close enough that my body betrayed me by freezing instead of fighting. “You don’t understand yet,” he murmured. A chill ran down my spine. “But you will.” Before I could react The world shifted. His grip tightened. The forest blurred. And suddenly The ground wasn’t beneath my feet anymore. My breath tore from my lungs as he lifted me effortlessly, throwing me over his shoulder like I weighed nothing. “Put me down!” I shouted, panic breaking through fully now as I struggled against him. It didn’t matter. Nothing I did mattered. Because he didn’t even slow down. Didn’t hesitate. He didn't care. The forest rushed past us as he moved fast, inhumanly fast, his hold on me was unbreakable. Fear clawed at my chest, sharp and overwhelming. “Where are you taking me?” I demanded, my voice shaking despite everything. For a moment, he didn’t answer. Then, finally “To where you belong.” My stomach dropped. Because something in his voice told me… This wasn’t temporary. This wasn’t a mistake. This was the beginning of something I wouldn’t be able to escape. And as the last traces of my old life disappeared behind us One terrifying realization settled in my chest. I hadn’t just lost my mate tonight. I had lost my entire world. And the man carrying me into the darkness… Might be even more dangerous than the one who broke me.
