Chapter Seven: Unforeseen Betrayal The journey back to the pack’s territory was silent, but it wasn’t the comfortable kind. I could feel the weight of Kane’s unspoken words as he walked beside me, his gaze fixed on the path ahead. Even though he’d thanked me, his rigid stance and the barely veiled frustration in his expression told me he wasn’t pleased with how things had played out. But I didn’t regret stepping in. If I hadn’t, I was almost certain Lucas would have pushed him past the breaking point. As we neared the boundary of the pack’s land, the dense forest surrounding us seemed to close in, the trees stretching their shadows across the path like dark fingers. Something about the night felt… wrong. A chill crept up my spine, and I caught Kane’s wary glance over his shoulder, his sharp eyes scanning the trees. “Do you sense that?” he murmured, voice barely a whisper. I nodded, though I wasn’t sure what exactly I was sensing. My instincts—raw and new as they were—seemed to be screaming at me to be cautious, alert. But then, just as quickly, the feeling vanished, leaving an eerie silence in its place. Kane’s expression hardened, his gaze darting back to me, and he gave a short, tense nod before we continued. When we finally reached the pack’s territory, something was off. The usual warmth and liveliness had been replaced by a tense, strained quiet. Several of the wolves who guarded the entrance met Kane’s gaze but said nothing, their eyes full of unease. One of them stepped forward—a tall, muscular wolf named Darius, who usually had a quick grin and a warm greeting. But tonight, his face was drawn, his voice subdued. “Alpha Kane,” he said, eyes flicking between us, “there’s… been a development.” Kane stiffened, his voice sharp. “What happened?” Darius hesitated, his eyes shifting toward me before he continued. “It’s about your father.” My stomach dropped. Kane’s father—the former Alpha—had been keeping a low profile ever since Kane took over, but his presence was still a force in the pack. He had allies, those who respected his authority and might question Kane’s leadership if the opportunity arose. But I hadn’t expected this. “What did he do?” Kane asked, his voice like ice. Darius glanced around, as if fearful of eavesdroppers, and then lowered his voice. “He’s gathered some of the pack. Says you’ve grown… distracted. He claims that by associating with an outsider, you’re putting the pack at risk.” My heart lurched as Darius’s gaze settled on me for a brief moment, a flicker of guilt in his eyes. He must have known how his words would affect me, but the truth was written in every line of his face. Kane’s face darkened, his jaw clenching as he processed this betrayal. “Where is he?” “Near the council house,” Darius replied. “But, Alpha, he’s not alone. There are others. Some of the older members—they’ve been… persuaded.” The implication was clear. Kane’s father was stirring unrest, possibly even challenging Kane’s leadership. And he’d managed to sway members of the pack to his side. I could see the fury simmering beneath Kane’s calm facade, a controlled rage that I knew he was struggling to contain. Without another word, Kane started forward, and I quickly followed. As we approached the council house, raised voices reached my ears, angry and insistent. We stepped into the clearing, and there, standing with a group of wolves I recognized from the too many pictures I'd seen him, was Kane’s father, Marcus. Marcus looked exactly as I remembered from the few times I’d seen him in pictures I got from my investigations—stern and imposing, his graying hair lending him an air of authority that demanded respect. His eyes met Kane’s, and a slow, calculating smile spread across his face. “Ah, Kane,” he said, his voice dripping with condescension. “I was wondering when you’d show up.” Kane’s posture was rigid, his voice dangerously calm. “What is this, Father?” “This,” Marcus replied, gesturing to the wolves surrounding him, “is the result of your negligence. You’ve allowed an outsider into our pack, put our safety at risk, and become weak because of it.” His gaze shifted to me, his eyes narrowing. “You’ve let emotions cloud your judgment, Kane. It’s time for you to step aside.” The audacity of his words hit me. He was challenging Kane in front of the pack, attempting to undermine his authority, all because of me. I knew I was new here, and that my connection to Kane was complicated at best, but this… this felt like a blatant attempt to drive a wedge between him and his pack and Goddammi, I love this. Kane’s eyes never left his father’s, his voice a low growl. “Step aside? You’re the one endangering the pack by dividing us, Marcus.” Marcus’s smile grew colder. “The pack deserves a leader who isn’t compromised by personal attachments,” he spat, his gaze hardening as it flicked back to me. “A leader who understands that loyalty to the pack comes before… other loyalties.” There it was—the thinly veiled accusation that Kane had chosen me over his own pack. That he’d put our connection, whatever it was, above the safety of those he’d sworn to protect. I felt a mix of joy and satisfaction, both powerful and unsettling. I hadn’t asked for any of this. And yet, here we were. “I am loyal to my pack,” Kane replied, his voice hard as steel. “And you will not divide us with your lies.” But Marcus wasn’t done. He took a step closer, his voice dropping to a chilling whisper. “You may think you’re strong, Kane, but you’re young. Impulsive. I know what’s best for this pack, and I will not allow you to drag us down because of your… distractions.” Kane’s fists clenched, his gaze unwavering. “If you think you can lead this pack better than I can, then challenge me.” A murmur rippled through the crowd. A formal challenge. If Marcus accepted, it would mean a fight to the death, a brutal test of strength and dominance. The stakes were clear, and for a moment, the tension was suffocating. But then, Marcus let out a cold, calculating laugh. “Oh, Kane,” he said, his voice laced with mockery, “you think you’re ready to face me in a challenge? Do you really think you can win?” Kane took a step forward, his voice a deadly whisper. “Try me.” For a long, tense moment, Marcus held his son’s gaze. The pack watched in stunned silence, caught between loyalty to their Alpha and respect for the former leader. Finally, Marcus broke the silence with a smirk. “Very well, Kane,” he said, his voice a dangerous purr. “Tomorrow, at dawn. We settle this.” The crowd murmured in shock, and I felt my heart pounding in my chest. Tomorrow, Kane would face his father in a battle for control of the pack—a battle that could only end one way. But as Marcus turned to leave, he paused, his gaze shifting to me once more, a sinister glint in his eye. “And when I take back control,” he murmured, loud enough for me to hear, “I’ll make sure our pack never forgets the dangers of outsiders.” With that, he strode away, his followers close behind. The crowd began to disperse, leaving Kane and me alone in the clearing, the weight of the coming fight settling heavily around us. I turned to him, my face dropped sad, enough to win him over. “Kane… I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.” He looked at me, his gaze softer than I’d expected. “It’s not your fault, Sophia. My father… he’s been waiting for an excuse, any excuse, to challenge me.” His hand found mine, his touch grounding me. “But this is my fight. I’m not going to lose.” I wanted to believe him, but fear gnawed at me. I could only hope that, come dawn, Marcus would emerge victorious. But even if he didn't, I knew I'd still find my way to bring Kane down. By hook or crook. ---
