Chapter Nine
Secrets in the Dark
As Kane and I walked side by side, the tension between us was almost tangible, though it was no longer the heat of a fight—it was something colder, a sense of duty forced by circumstance. Even after all he had done to solidify his role as Alpha, I couldn’t shake the resentment simmering beneath the surface. Every victory he claimed felt like it came at a cost I was forced to bear.
Kane’s words echoed in my mind: *He’ll be back. And when he does… I’ll be ready.* But a part of me wasn’t so sure that I wanted him to be.
The forest was dark and silent as we made our way back to the heart of the pack’s territory. Kane was still breathing heavily, though he tried to mask his exhaustion behind his stoic gaze. I found myself wanting to keep my distance from him, wanting to let my own thoughts settle without his presence lingering beside me like a shadow.
“Are you planning to stand by me in this, Sophia?” he asked, his voice low but firm, piercing through the stillness.
I didn’t look at him, keeping my gaze on the path ahead. “If you’re looking for loyalty, Kane, maybe you should have thought about that before making your demands.” My tone came out harsher than I intended, but the satisfaction in his silence reassured me.
He stopped walking, his expression unreadable. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“It means that loyalty doesn’t come on command.” I didn’t elaborate. I didn’t want him to understand. My hatred was something I clung to, a shield against the power he held over me as Alpha.
He nodded, something unreadable flickering in his eyes before he turned away. “Suit yourself.”
We walked the rest of the way in silence, and when we reached the main gathering area, he slipped away, leaving me alone with my thoughts. The moment he was gone, I felt a strange sense of relief, as if a weight had been lifted from my chest. Kane was Alpha now, but he’d never truly understand the power of loyalty if he thought it could be won through dominance alone.
The hours passed slowly as I tried to find solace in the quiet of the night. But as the stars shifted overhead, an idea took root, one that I couldn’t ignore. My gaze drifted toward the edge of the woods where Marcus had disappeared, and a sense of purpose tightened in my chest. I didn’t owe Kane my loyalty. But Marcus… he’d spoken words that had stirred something deep within me, words that challenged the authority Kane held with such arrogance.
Without letting myself think twice, I slipped away from the pack’s quarters, moving silently through the trees until I reached the place where I’d last seen Marcus. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and pine, and my heartbeat quickened as I searched the shadows for any sign of him.
Then I saw him, leaning against a tree, his gaze piercing as he watched me approach. He looked like he had expected me.
“Sophia,” he greeted, his voice smooth, unhurried, as though we were merely old friends meeting in the middle of the night.
“Marcus,” I replied, keeping my tone steady. I wasn’t about to show him any weakness. “I wanted to talk.”
His eyes gleamed, a knowing smile curving his lips. “Somehow, I thought you might.” He straightened, gesturing for me to sit on a fallen log beside him. I stayed standing, unwilling to settle, unwilling to make myself comfortable in his presence.
“What exactly do you want with Kane?” I asked, keeping my tone even, though the question had been gnawing at me ever since I’d witnessed the fight.
He let out a low chuckle. “What do I want?” His gaze turned cold, a shadow passing over his features. “I want what’s rightfully mine. This pack was under my command long before Kane even dreamed of becoming Alpha. He took that from me, and now he thinks he can rule without consequence.”
“And you think you can just take it back?”
Marcus’s eyes darkened, his smile fading as he looked at me with a seriousness that sent a chill down my spine. “I don’t just think it, Sophia. I know it.”
I clenched my fists, the frustration bubbling up. “You let him defeat you tonight. If you’re so certain, why didn’t you finish it then?”
A glimmer of amusement crept back into his gaze. “Ah, you misunderstand. I let him win tonight because I wanted him to believe he’d succeeded. The truth is, he’s only made himself vulnerable, given the pack a taste of victory that I can turn against him. His arrogance will be his downfall, and when that happens, I will be ready.”
My pulse raced, a mixture of anticipation and unease filling me as I absorbed his words. Kane’s victory wasn’t as secure as he thought it was, and Marcus’s confidence was unsettlingly contagious. I couldn’t deny the appeal of seeing Kane fall from his pedestal.
“So… what’s your plan?” The question slipped out before I could stop myself, and Marcus’s grin widened, as though he’d been waiting for me to ask.
“You’re a smart girl, Sophia. I need someone on the inside, someone who can keep me informed, subtly undermine his authority. Someone… who’s already close to him.” His gaze fixed on me, sharp and calculating. “Someone like you.”
I felt a thrill of excitement mingled with apprehension. To betray Kane openly was unthinkable, but to subtly twist the circumstances in Marcus’s favor, to finally see Kane stripped of the power he wielded so recklessly… The idea stirred something within me, a flicker of rebellion that refused to be extinguished.
But there was one question I couldn’t shake. “And what happens to me when you take control?” I asked, meeting his gaze with a hard look of my own. “I don’t want to end up as just another pawn in someone else’s game.”
Marcus’s expression softened slightly, a hint of respect entering his eyes. “You’ll have a place in my pack, Sophia. One that reflects your loyalty, and your strength. Kane doesn’t see what you’re capable of, but I do. You’d be a valuable ally.”
The promise was tantalizing, a chance to finally escape the shadow Kane cast over my life. To carve out my own place, one where I wouldn’t be subject to his authority. And perhaps… just perhaps, I could play a role in shaping the future of the pack, one where loyalty was earned, not demanded.
After a moment’s hesitation, I nodded. “Fine. I’ll help you. But if you betray me, Marcus, I swear you’ll regret it.”
He chuckled, a low, satisfied sound. “I wouldn’t dream of it, Sophia.”
The silence settled between us, filled with unspoken promises and shared ambitions. In that moment, under the cover of darkness, a pact was forged, one that bound me to a path I hadn’t anticipated. I knew there was no turning back. The thrill of rebellion pulsed through me, a sense of liberation mingling with the weight of the choices I’d made.
“Until then,” Marcus murmured, inclining his head in a subtle farewell. He turned and disappeared into the shadows, leaving me alone in the quiet of the forest. I stayed there for a moment, feeling the chill of the night air against my skin, the realization of what I’d just committed to settling over me.
When I finally made my way back to the pack’s territory, the stars had already started to fade, the first light of dawn creeping over the horizon. But as I walked, I felt a new resolve, a purpose that drove me forward with each step.
By the time I reached my quarters, the rest of the pack was stirring. As I slipped inside, I felt a strange mixture of excitement and dread, the thrill of rebellion mingling with the knowledge that one wrong step could unravel everything.
But for now, I would play my role, the loyal pack member, the dutiful supporter of Kane’s leadership. I would wait, biding my time until the moment was right to bring Marcus’s plan to fruition.
And when that moment came, I would be ready.
