Chapter 4.

980 Words
The maid placed cups of tea in front of David and me as we sat in silence in his study. After the final housekeeper departed, David picked up his tea and raised it to his mouth to have a drink. "So, Lady Charles, what seemed to be so urgent that it needed to be this visit?" "My guards are obviously dead." I spoke directly, grabbing his attention right away. "My Guardian killed them because they were hired by someone who was still unhappy that I was going to marry your brother," the statement reads. How unfortunate that is. With a pouty expression on his face, David was clearly not happy. "May I assume that you are not injured?" "I'm doing just fine." "... I understand that's not all you have to say?" Would you wish to take on the role of Crown Prince of the Empire, Prince David Blake? Before David's light-hearted laughing could be heard throughout the space, silence fell. A few moments later, he paused, his eyes dead and his face turning into that of the killer he was when he realised I was being really serious. He threw his cup on the table and gave me a long, hard look. "You were sent by whom?" "No one." I responded right away. "I am aware that you are not a fool for realising your brother would make a terrible emperor. The puppet that he is, he would lead this Empire to catastrophe. My lips become curly when I spat. David reclined on his sofa and gazed at me with curiosity. "And why are you fighting against him when you would gain from said puppet?" "Advantage?" I sneered. "That i***t would listen to his mother with little to no hesitation because he is so far up her ass." Not only is he a coward, but he's also a self-centred Alpha who, to be honest, is more appropriate for this Empire than this miserable ass. That was the moment when I let out all of my pent-up rage over my own and my loved ones' deaths. The Prince seemed surprised by my outburst, so I took deep breaths and released them to calm down. I am arguing that you would be a better fit for this Empire, Prince David. We need a better ruler to succeed your father because my family and I are also members of this same Empire. "And you believe that I'm the best option?" "Yes, Your Majesty." I answered without thinking twice. "Your fighting skills are far superior to those of your two siblings; the Royal Tutors have acknowledged your intelligence, and the Knights of the Palace have given you several compliments. You would have a better chance of winning the crown if I joined in because you have a sizable portion. "You? How come you are so unique, Lady Tracy? "My veins are filled with the blood of one of the blunders made by the Ancient Pack. In terms of authority and other matters, I come in second to the royal family. That explains why, as soon as I turned five years old, your brother and I got engaged. Your bloodline would encounter little to no resistance from the other nobility in the Empire if my bloodline was present. David raised his chin and began to think. He looked up at me with a fixed gaze. "As a King's Maker, you promise to support me, but what about your engagement to my elder brother?" "I plan to cancel everything," David gave a startled blink. Really? precisely like that? "It would be quicker for me to display my loud and clear support for you in order to win over a significant number of the nobles. You're already more than capable of leading and serving in the military, so for me to turn against Clark and support you instead would send ripple effects that would work in your benefit. Nothing could be done, not even by your father. "Um..." For a short while, we sat in quiet while maintaining eye contact. To be honest though, the Alpha energy witing off of David made me want to avert my eyes in obedience. His gaze held great force. It was a great shame that he wasn't the first prince since everything would have been so much simpler. "You've spoken, Lady Charles, and I hear you. When I've decided, I'll give you a call to this research. I lowered my head. "Thank you, Your Highness, for this chance. I'd like to withdraw now. With a nod, David watched me as I stood up from the couch and made my way to the door. "Madam Charles." My footsteps stopped, and I turned to face David. "I won't think twice to kill you if I discover that our conversation was a prank or trap of some kind." My lips turned into a wry smile. Nothing less from you, Your Highness, is what I expect. Hello there. I bowed my head one more and then opened the door and left. I stepped carefully over to Laura and the elder woman who were standing a few feet away from the study. "Good afternoon, Charles Lady. Andrea, I'm the head maid. It was a pleasure to get to know you. With a slight bow, the woman spoke. I inclined my head slightly. "And the same for Head Maid Andrea." Please come with me. Your luggage has already been put in your room, which has already been readied. We were shown to a spacious, well designed guest room that was well-equipped. Laura will be staying in the room with the small door connecting it to mine. We were told by the head maid that supper would be early since the Prince/Duke would be the one to officially open the event. I followed Laura to the loo to get ready for the day, excitement swirling through me.
