Chapter 11. Claire

I woke up and noticed Carter wasn’t in bed. Did I oversleep? I couldn’t smell any coffee so Carter must have been up way before I was. I checked the clock. I only overslept by 30 minutes. Where could he be? I walked to the bathroom. He wasn't there. He wasn’t in the living room. When I walked into the kitchen. The door flew open almost giving me a heart attack. It was Carter.
“WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING,” I asked him, shouting.
“Hey I didn’t mean to scare you.”
“Well you did.”
“I’m sorry baby.”
“What on earth do you have?”
“I’ve got Caramel iced coffee and I’ve got raisin cinnamon bagels with brown sugar cinnamon cream cheese.”
“Why?”
“Because you wanted them.”
“I never told you that.”
“You kept mumbling about it in your sleep.”
“Ok thank you I guess.”
“You’re welcome. If you are craving anything I will get it for you. I will do anything you want or need me to,” he said, giving me a kiss on the forehead.
“Ok, thank you,” I said with a pause. “This is overwhelming.”
“What is?”
“All of this.”
“I just want to make sure you are happy and comfortable,” he said looking a little sad.
“I get that, and it’s really nice, thank you. I am just still adjusting to the news. So maybe let me warm up to the idea. And maybe don’t tell anyone yet. Okay?”
“Ok.”
He set everything down and we ate. I do have to say it was delicious. It hit the spot.
After breakfast Carter went to work and I went to the temple to sit in peace with our goddess. I thought of everything that I had been through and decided to pray on it. All I got was to lean on your friends. So I went home and called Tara. I invited her over and asked her to bring me more caramel iced coffee.
There was a light rap on the door before she opened it calling out she was here.
“Hey Tara.”
“Hey I brought you coffee,”
“Ooh thanks.”
“So what’s up?”
“I wanted to talk to you about something but I must swear you to secrecy.”
“Ok, what is it.”
“I’m pregnant.”
“Are you excited?”
“No, I'm scared.”
“Why?”
“When I was about 8 my dad found out my mother was a werewolf and killed her. With her dying breath she told me to run and never look back.”
“Oh my god,”
“Why did he kill her?”
“Because he kept saying she was an abomination and that she had to be purged from the world.”
“That is awful.”
“So I have no idea how to be a parent.”
“Well you know they say it takes a village anyway.”
“I know but…”
“Listen this baby is going to be half you and half Carter. And I am more than happy to help anytime you need it.”
“Can I ask you something?”
“Sure.”
“Why don’t you and John have kids?”
“Because it isn’t meant to be.”
“What do you mean?”
“I can’t have kids.”
“Oh… I… I am so sorry.”
“It’s okay we made peace with it a long time ago.”
“Oh…”
“So doi you guys have a nursery planned out,” Tara asked.
“No, I just told Carter last night. And then he was so over-eager this morning that we haven’t really had time to talk about anything.”
“That’s just Carter,” she said with a chuckle. “One time when we were kids Carter, John, and I were out skating and I fell and Carter insisted on carrying me to the pack doctor to make sure I was ok before he would let me walk on my own. Well he ended up tripping over a scooter and dropped me. Then he tripped over me and broke his wrist.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
“Tell me more.”
“Well one time he and John were in their not-so-secret clubhouse-”
“What do you mean not-so-secret clubhouse,” I asked, cutting her off.
“Well they had this tree house on the very edge of the woods they ‘fixed up’ and would hang out in. Anyway, they were in the tree house and Carter was supposed to fix the floor in it while John fixed the ladder and the walls. Well when John went to fix one of the walls he fell through the floor and broke his leg. Carter felt so bad he tried to spend the next three weeks taking care of him. Finally John’s mother had to male Carter go home,” Tara told me with a little laugh.
Tara told me a few more stories and Carter when he was a child and they made me feel so much better. By the time Carter got home Tara and I were howling in laughter.
