THE MIRACLE SHE IS WAITING FOR

Though they are poor, Mary had always tried to give the best to her only daughter. And when she was diagnosed with migraine, the agile woman had to reduce her hard labour, and most of the responsibility shifted to Alice.

Even when her daughter paid the bill, Mary is a no-nonsense woman and this is one of the times to see her beautiful face turn horrible as she growled at her daughter.

"Why don't you come home yesterday?"

"I was sick and slept off... Sorry, mom."

A lie is easy to cover when you can convince yourself that it's the truth. And to Alice, what happened to her was not far from the truth.

She is sick from the desire to see the hazel eyes again and she slept off because of the exhaustion that comes after a very long time of lovemaking.

Because of the incomparable love of every mother, Mary fussed over her daughter when she laid down on the bed.

"You need to see our family doctor."

Alice doesn't want to see the doctor. She just wants to be left alone and daydream about the mysterious man who arouses the craving in her.

"Did you inform your manager about your health challenge?"

"I am sacked."

"Oh my gosh! Why did he sack you?"

"Because I don't accept his s****l advances," Alice mumbled as she close her eyes.

What can she tell her mother, except this half-truth?

Before this incident, the manager had made several attempts to lure her into his bed, and his lust had suddenly turned into hatred when the lady rebuffed all his wooing.

"Some men were scum. Don't worry, you will see a better job."

Alice breathed with reliving when her mother left and the serenity in her room was shattered when her friend walked inside.

"Hey... Why don't you pick up your call?"

"Stop shouting, Benny. I am not feeling fine."

Benny walked towards her friend, placed her palm on her forehead and mumbled, "your body is hot, you need to see a doctor."

"No, Benny. I need to confide something in you... Something happend to me yesterday, and I still can't comprehend how it occur."

"You know you can talk to me, don't you?"

Benny is the only one Alice trust, and she thinks the feeling is reciprocated. They met in high school and become friends after.

"Wow!" Benny leapt up from the mattress and giggled for a while.

"How was your experience, and who is the lucky guy?"

"I don't remember how I felt, and I don't even know the guy."

"You are joking, Alice!" Benny exclaimed.

She had been trying to hoodwink Alice into giving her virginity to some rich dudes who derive weird pleasure in having s*x with newbies. And the fact that her friend has given it out to a perfect stranger made her gawk at her with a killing look.

"Tell me what happened."

"He didn't give you any money?"

"No. Except for a golden wristwatch."

"A wristwatch?.. Can I have a look?"

"Sure... Why not? Check it over there."

Benny stepped towards the drawer, picked up the wristwatch, and a sudden awe appear on her face, albeit for a while.

"It may not be as worthless as it looks. I have someone who can pay you ten thousand dollars for it."

Alice seemed to be happy at this offer. Ten thousand dollars is equivalent to her ten months' salary and having it in a night appeared to be the miracle she is waiting for.

"Let me sell it for you, and I will send the money to your account soon."

"Okay. Hope you still have my account numbers?"

"Yeah."

The pairs shortly chatted about their encounters in life, and Benny left with the promise to be back as soon as possible.

Left alone, Alice picked up her phone and dialled Danny's numbers, and her breathing seize when he muttered from the other side of the line.

"I called your number through the night, but it was switched off... What happen to you?"

"I am sick."

"Will you go to the hospital? I can order a car to drive you down there."

"No, please. I just need to rest for a while and I will be okay."

"Have you informed your boss?"

"That is no longer necessary because I am fired."

"Gush! I know it will get to that. He always sack any lady that refused to open her legs for him. I am sure you will see a better offer soon."

Alice knew she will see another job, Christmas season is always filled with opportunities because of the large numbers of tourists and those in the rural areas who flocked to Arkansas city. But for now, she just wants to be left alone to bemoan her fate.

"I am sorry to inform you that I won't be coming home this Christmas as earlier promised."

"Did you ever keep your promise? Danny. This is the fifty Christmas we will be spending away from each other." Alice mumbled as tears rolled down her face.

"I am so sorry, Babe. I was the only one capable to manage the company in the absence of the Director."

"I feel miserable and not in the mood for chit-chat. Let's talk later, Danny."

"Okay... I understand."

Alice close her eyes as soon as the call was disconnected from the other side of the line, laid her head on the pillow and was deep in sleep after.

Her dream was filled with the face of that mysterious man who robbed her of her pride. Yet the feeling towards him was warm and affectionate. Deep inside, she knew she will love to see his face again.

Hours later, she was woke by her mother, and forced to eat a sumptuous meal. And it was the bleeping of a message entering her phone that make her leave the dining table where she was picking up her meal.

'So fast!'

Her account had just been credited with a sum of ten thousand dollars.

'Thank you, Benny. I owe you a beautiful Christmas gift.'
