I was grateful this week had quickly moved out the way. All the back and forth about Jonothan and this case was finally over. I got what I got and was beyond happy with it. He would be rotting in jail and I would get my life back. I was also finally able to get a good start on my managerial duties with Ebenezer, and boy am I doing it big. We have a list of different magazines who want our whole team for covers they are shooting throughout the next year. I had replaced our whole roster of stylists and was bringing in fresh style along with fresh concepts.

“ Yo’ parents been c**k blockin’ all week. “ Vinny complained.

“ Exactly. “ I pushed myself off the pillows, climbing into his lap. “ They helpin’ you out. “

Before I could answer, there was a knock at the door.

“ Mama said get ya’ll grown asses down to this kitchen. “ Jaylin yelled.

I jumped from the bed and rushed into the bathroom behind Vinny. We jumped into the shower, washing and rinsing ourselves before standing at the sink and brushing our teeth. We walked towards the closet, picking out something to wear and getting decent before we headed downstairs, greeting everyone who was there so far. Vinny walked off with his father as I walked into the kitchen with my mother. I looked at the silver tins scattered across the counter.

“ Looks like you’re finished? “ I went to pull the foil back on a few of the dishes, but she popped my hand each time. “ Ouch. “

“ Get over here and finish this mac and cheese. “ she was bitter. I laughed.

“ Lady, don’t get mad ‘cause daddy ain’t putting out. “ I sprinkled the noodles with the salt and pepper before cutting up the cheese into blocks and placing them into the pan.

“ I was throwing this body at him all night. “ she admitted. “ Normally we can’t keep our hands off each other. “

“ In his defense, this is a stressful time for all of us. I’m getting married. I talked to him and he still can’t believe it. “

“ And he means that in a good way. “

“ I know, mama. “ I sprinkled the cheese on top of the noodles before placing them in the oven. “ This is TMI, but you gotta’ catch daddy off guard. Try somethin’ different to get his attention. “

“ You might be right. “ she sighed. “ At least one of us ain’t uptight. “

I danced. “ You got that right. “

She tossed the towel over at me. I told her to take a break from the kitchen and that I could manage everything else. Vinny took this as an opportunity to get an early preview of what everything tasted like. I won’t lie, I let him. His pouty face was just too cute, and he looked damn good in his heather grey set.

After about three more hours, all of the cooking was done in time for all the guests that had arrived. Everyone was eating and really enjoying themselves. I was genuinely happy and excited for this new life of mine. I’m about to be somebodies' husband. I never thought I would be here.

“ I know I better get this many gifts once I get a damn house. “ Jaylin complained, holding the large box wrapped in a blue and white striped paper topped with a gold bow.

“ Please, you won’t have to buy a thing. My treat. “ I told her and her frown turned into a smile. She walked away just as Mrs. Marie walked over to me.

“ Congrats, my baby. “ she hugged me tightly. “ This place is beautiful. “

“ I owe it all to my baby. “ I blushed.

“ You know I’ve always admired you, David. I just can’t wait to see what you do next. “ she tilted her glass towards me before kissing my cheek and walking away.

“ I’ve never seen him so happy. “ Vinny’s father spoke from behind me. I was shocked as we didn’t get much time to talk since we met. Everything has been happening so fast.

“ I just believe in giving him everything he gives me. “ I watched Vinny taunting the kids as they played the game. “ I thank you for raising a good man. “

“ Aye, I had no choice. “ he shook his head. “ Life wasn’t easy for us. His mama got mixed with the wrong crowd, left me by myself. I had to learn quick. “

“ Sometimes it's for the better, you know? “ I shrugged and he nodded.

“ You aight with me, son. “ he embraced me tightly. “ Now I gotta’ run. Yo’ best friend done found me. “

He rushed away as Jaylin waved at me before chasing after him. I chuckled to myself, leaving the kitchen and walking over to Vinny and the kids. I kissed his bald head as he continued to focus on the Mario game they were playing.

“ Wassup, 'lil daddy? “

“ I just wanted to say I love you. “ he paused the game as the children groaned. He looked at me, then grabbed my right hand and kissed the ring.

“ It’s you and me forever, baby. “

A week has quickly come and gone. I woke up early enough to cook some breakfast before I left for the Saturday meeting at Ebenezer. Once I was finished, my mother was up by then and wouldn’t stop telling me about her and my father's eventful night. This is the fourth one this week. I rushed upstairs to kiss Vinny goodbye before heading over to the firm and into the conference room.

“ Good morning, everyone. “ I spoke as everyone spoke back. I sat down in the swivel chair, pulling out my notepad and my pen and waiting for the last manager to walk inside, who was right behind me.

“ Alright, thank you all for joining me so early this morning. “ Mrs. Marie stood up and walked over to the projector. She grabbed the remote, turning it on, and starting the presentation. “ Okay. As of today, this twelth of December, Ebenezer will be going through some changes. With the recent success of so many shoots supervised by our very own David Huff, the company has made a full comeback. Revenue is up, personnel is happy, and we are classic Ebenezer again. “

We all clapped, looking around and nodding to each other. This was the goal I had set from the beginning, and to know that even after what I had gone through, I was able to come back and show how serious I was about my work.

“ With more revenue coming in, we plan to expand Ebenezer, opening two more branches. One being in the heart of New York City, and another on the busy streets of Los Angeles. “ the news shocked all of us. “ Of course, everything is still being mapped and planned, but this will become reality one day soon. And I will be choosing two people from this group to represent the brand. “

“ Don’t you think some of us may be a bit underqualified? “ Marge spoke up. Mrs. Marie seemed to take it as an insult, especially when we all know her reputation in the business world.

“ And who might that be? “

Marge looked over at me with a nervous smile on her face. I widened my eyes, shocked at her sudden boldness, but I respected it. I smiled, amused by it.

“ Although talent is a huge part of what we do here, experience is the key component to being a great Headmaster. Some of us just have more experience than others. “

“ But your numbers and reports don’t reflect that. “ I raised my brow, defending myself. I wondered how far I wanted to take this, but I had to remember that I was a Manager now, and the voice for my department. Our relationships with other departments have been rocky, but God has allowed me to accomplish so much in the past week and I refuse to let that go unnoticed. “ I’m not trying to brag, but if you look at the charts on the screen, every other department at Ebenezer has lapped you twice in the last month. “

“ We’re short-staffed at the moment. “ she mumbled, trying not to piss Mrs. Marie of further than what she was.

“ That’s not an excuse. I was gone for a month, came back, cleaned house, and had one of the busiest weeks ever with two shoots a day for seven days straight. I lost money firing eight, seasoned stylists and gained twice as much from hiring six fresh ones. Of course, that was all with the help of my beloved Jason, but we both pulled our weight equally and it shows. “ I pointed out.

She was speechless. She had to be. Everything at this point was pointing to her failure of accountability. She honestly had no excuse for poor performance, especially when her department is one of the most simple and manageable ones.

“ My apologies. “

“ I expect that everyone has their plans for the next year? “ Mrs. Marie asked and we all nodded. “ Good. I will review them with you one by one, starting with Marge. I ask that you wait in your offices until I call you. “

We all left the room and did as we were asked. I sat in my office going over the plans until she had finally called my desk phone. The only person I saw left in the office was Jason, so I assumed I was last. I walked into the conference room as she sat in the cushioned chair.

“ I’m glad you stood up for yourself this morning. “ she smiled. “ That’s the sign of a good Manager. “

“ Yes ma’am, thank you. I’m really excited to show you what I have planned for next year. “

“ Do whatever you need to, I have no worries. “

“ Really? “

“ David, you and Jason are the reason Ebenezer is back. You saw the dead weight, cut it, and now you can watch the fruit of your labor. And just like you told that Marge, you made her monthly gross in a week. “ she shuffled in the chair as it lightly creaked. “ I have a fantastic way to end your year. “

“ And what’s that? “

“ Do you know how important Miss Danielle is to Atlanta culture? She is the top designer in the city, and has set many of the trends you young kids are bringing back. “ she chuckled. “ She has this Gala every year for Christmas that is just grand. There is good food, vicious fashion, and great networking opportunities. “ she side-eyed me.

“ I heard about the Deck the Hall Gala’s, I never knew she was behind them. “ my face lit up. Those Gala’s were The Grammy’s to stylist and influencers in Atlanta. It was my dream since I’ve started working at Ebenezer.

“ Well, she asked for you personally. She wants you to style every look for her presentation. “

“ You kidding me? “

“ Do you know me as a woman who kids? “ she smiled. “ You made a wonderful impression at the shoot; she still can’t stop talking about it. “

“ I’m speechless. I would love nothing more than to represent Ebenezer. “

“ Outstanding. “
