Chapter 1

“Mark, this can’t go on any longer,” Emma said, her voice trembling with a mix of anger and exhaustion. She stood in the dimly lit kitchen, the only sound the ticking of the clock on the wall and the low hum of the refrigerator. Mark looked up from his phone, his face set in a scowl. “What are you talking about now, Emma?” “You know exactly what I’m talking about,” Emma snapped, slamming her hand on the table. “Lily needs you. I need you. But you’re never here! You come home late as if you come home at all. And when you are here, it’s like we don’t even exist to you.” “Oh, here we go again,” Mark muttered, rolling his eyes. “I’m working hard to provide for this family. Do you think money just grows on trees?” “I’m not talking about money!” Emma’s voice rose. “I’m talking about being present, about being a husband and a father. Lily cried herself to sleep again tonight because you missed her school play. She’s starting to think you don’t care about her at all.” Mark slammed his phone down on the table, standing up abruptly. “I’m doing my best, Emma! But nothing I do is ever good enough for you, is it? You’re always nagging, always complaining.” “Don’t turn this around on me,” Emma shot back, tears welling in her eyes. “This isn’t about me being unreasonable. This is about you abandoning us emotionally. And don’t think I don’t know about the drinking. You come home smelling like a bar most nights.” Mark’s face darkened. “You don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m just blowing off steam. You’d understand if you knew what it was like to have this kind of pressure.” “I do understand pressure,” Emma said, her voice softening but still firm. “I’m raising our daughter practically on my own. I’m managing the house, and my work, and trying to keep this family together. But I can’t do it alone, Mark. I won’t do it alone.” Mark sneered. “Maybe you should have thought of that before you married me.” Emma took a deep breath, her hands shaking. “Maybe I made a mistake. But I won’t let Lily suffer because of it. If you can’t be the husband and father we need, then we need to make some changes.” Mark’s eyes narrowed. “Are you saying what I think you’re saying?” Emma nodded, her heartbreaking but her resolve firm. “I want a divorce, Mark. This isn’t healthy for any of us. It’s time we faced the truth.” For a moment, Mark just stared at her, his face a mix of shock and anger. Then he turned and walked out the door, slamming it behind him. Emma stood there, tears streaming down her face, the weight of her decision settling over her. She knew it was the right thing to do, for her and Lily. But that didn’t make it hurt any less. As she wiped her tears, she heard a small voice from the doorway. “Mommy?” Emma turned to see Lily standing there, her teddy bear clutched tightly in her arms. “Hey, sweetie. It’s going to be okay. I promise.” Lily nodded, but her eyes were filled with confusion and fear. Emma knelt and pulled her daughter into a tight hug, vowing to protect her and give her the love and stability she deserved, no matter what. ………………. Two weeks later, the divorce papers were filed. Emma spent her days balancing work and trying to maintain some semblance of normalcy for Lily. The nights were the hardest, the silence of the house pressing in on her, a stark reminder of her new reality. Emma sat down at her desk one evening working tirelessly on a project, pouring out different designs, when a knock came in from the door, she stared at the clock it was nearly midnight. Her heart raced as she opened the door only to find Mark, reeking of alcohol. What are you doing here Mark? Keeping her voice low so as not to wake Lily from her sleep. Baby, I'm sorry, I missed you and our daughter; the home has been so lonely without your presence. Mark spilled pityfully. “Go home Mark” you are drunk; Emma said firmly with so much irritation on her face, trying to close the door; Mark shoved his foot in the gap preventing her. “Please Emma hear me out” He pleaded”. His eyes were glassy; I can change, I promise. Emma’s resolve hardened; it's too late for that Mark you need to leave now. Mark's face twisted with anger, you think you can just throw me off like that right? I have equal rights to Lily. I'm her father! You had all the chances you throw them off yourself, Emma shot back. Mark, please leave me and my daughter alone. I beg you. Mark's face darkened, his jaw clenched in a fierce scowl. He grasped the door knob with a white-knuckled grip, his knuckles bulging as he twisted it. The air seemed to vibrate with tension as he growled, "This isn't over, Emma." The words hung like a threat, his eyes blazing with a fierce intensity. Then, with a sudden jerk, he wrenched the door open and stormed out, leaving Emma feeling shaken and uneasy. Emma quickly shut the door, her hands shaking. She knew Mark would not give up easily and the thoughts terrified her. Days turned into weeks, and Emma decided to focus on her work, Her target in landing a huge project that could help her stabilize her finances after the post-divorce.
