Chapter 13

“Father,” I called, but he did not answer. Seth called out to him, but he remained the same. He stared aimlessly forward, as if he was in a world to himself. “Father! Father!” Seth shouted as I looked at the sign above his cell. ‘This Villager Impersonated a Merchant May He forever Wander’ The thudding steps of someone running down the basement as keys rattled, and the doors were released. “Over here,” Seth shouted as Caremila came with keys and other villagers to help. Caremila opened the door while Seth unchained Father and helped him out. “Seth, I am going back upstairs. Caremila let me know if any of the other villagers are acting strange.” “Please, Reno… no violence,” Seth said to me. I stopped for a moment, but said nothing in return. It vexed me seeing him like that. Father his face was always cheerful even in the harshest of times. On the second floor the villagers had tied the elites of the town as Oliver and Luna stood watching over them. My eyes met the mayor's as I walked over to him. I hoisted him up. “What did you do to the man who you placed the blatant sign of May He forever Wander.” “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” “Liar, you better start talking or you’re going over that balcony.” “You can’t.” “I can, I would, I will.” He cried out to the others in the room but everyone, including the guild master didn’t stand in my way or voice complaint. “Reno, wait!” Luna shouted.  I pulled him along until we were on the balcony. “Wait, wait. I will tell you.” I paused for a moment and looked down at him. He came into town filled with produce. Villagers aren’t allowed to sell he was supposed to be paid a fixed sum for his produce but he kept saying it was not enough… And he sold some illegally. He was caught and I may have been too harsh on the penalty but it was an honest mistake.” I chuckled. “An honest mistake. Why does he look as though he is under the influence of something? Is it a spell? I propped him up against the railing.” Luna drew closer to me on the balcony. “It’s a potion that he got from the merchants’ guild. He wanted to test it out on someone it’s called Stupor.” The guild master said. I dropped the mayor. “Stupor, is there a counteracting potion for it.” The guildmaster shook his head. “Not that I know of, but it comes from the demi-human town of Rothla. If anyone would know it would be them.” From the balcony Seth and Caremila helped my father out of the residence along with the others. I saw a woman by the gate come forward realizing that the woman was my mother. She broke down into tears as she saw the look on my father’s face. I gripped my fist tightly. My eyes shifted from the mayor to the guildmaster then to Luna. “Where exactly is this place, guild master?” “I would have to show you it on the map.” “The map, no, you will come with me as my guide. I wouldn’t want you to send me in the wrong direction and if this issue can’t be fixed. I looked back at the mayor, believe there will be a reckoning.” “What to do about this town?” Oliver interjected. “Appoint new representatives put these people in those cells… after a fair trial and let it be known that it belongs to the Troll Slayer and the Whistling Wolf.” “The emperor would never stand for this.” I chuckled as the guards took them out to the cages below. “Your emperor isn’t coming to help you. You’re all on your own.” The door closed and my hand touched my chin. The emperor would he really intervene?
