Chapter 4

The creature was enormous, and it dwarfed two other shapes standing beside it. It was ugly with the bare resemblance of a man and a foul stench lingered in the air. The moon peeked its head, revealing them surrounded in a lair of bones. Trolls, so this was the Troll King, Seth had placed himself in the middle of the adventurers and the trolls. Was he that crazy to be acknowledged? The adventurers were scurrying to get away as the mage cast an ice spell. Didn’t they know Trolls had a weakness to fire or poison? The mage flipped through his book as he cast. In the trolls reluctance to attack us, I ran towards the adventures. “What is this boy doing here?” the mage asked. “Forget him, we should run away!” another responded “What would the guild think about that, you fool!?” “It won’t matter if we die! I am not going to die here for some filthy peasants. It’s you that got us into this mess. We don’t even know if they were going to fulfill the payment.” “Me?” the mage replied, “this task has to be done we can’t be besieged on two different ends.” “It’s their fault to begin with let them figure it out.” The smaller two trolls raised their crude club towards Seth as they charged. Seth for all of his practice with the blade maneuvered quickly around the trolls who were having a hard time hitting him. I shouted. “Summon I.” a dog  was spawned into existence from thin air . “Protect Seth. I turned back. “What are you stupid humans waiting for? Use Fire arrows at the trolls. Don’t you have poison or flame?” The adventurers ran as the mage fell over in the turmoil. I guess it’s what I should expect from humans. “I will take your book for a moment.”  “Seth, move away!” I shouted and as he ducked back. “Fireball.” I unleashed fire that seemed to cover the plains in front of me. The two Trolls that Seth had been dodging attacks were burnt to a crisp as it took them out and a portion of the forest. The fire crackled as Seth walked back to me with the dog in his hand. “How did you do that?” “I got lucky, I guess.” “Luck?” the word dropped from the mages mouth. “I have never seen a fireball devastating like that before in my life. Who, who are you, child?” “Reno,” I replied, “and you?” A loud swing followed by a shafting noise as the dog howled and wind passed sharply behind my back. The next sound thundered as I turned to see Seth had connected to a tree in the distance. Rising from the ground was the Troll King. It  eyed me intensely. The fire seemed to not faze him as he stepped forward. Should I try poison? I went to cast a spell, but my mana was gone. “Human, weak I am the troll King of this forest. Human’s food. We let humans live long enough and humans attack. I kill all humans.” I stepped back. The Troll King stepped forward, his arm raised but before he could make his deadly strike a bright light flashed and with a thud his arm laid severed upon the ground. Behind him was Seth covered in white aura his pupils were obscure. The Troll lumbered towards him as Seth took a stance before collapsing onto the ground.  What!? I shouted in my head. The mage coughed next to me as he tried to scurry away. How was the thing still able to move I didn’t have anything else to throw at it I bit my lips as I thought about what was the best move to do next. It seemed I had underestimated how powerful it was. Could I distract it with the adventurers and make it to Seth to retreat? As it drew closer my options were waning. “Reno, you abandoned me!” Caremila shouted from the higher ground. Alongside her were some villagers that had been training with us from the forest, each of them holding a torch in their hand. The troll seemed to understand his situation but would the fire actually work. If what I had cast didn’t. I looked at the mage as Caremila and the others distracted him. “We should run away from here, boy,” the mage said. “Do you have any more mana?” “Yes,” the mage replied. “Good.” I grabbed his hand, and I transferred it to me. I cast the last spell in the book. “Poison Arrow.” It loose connecting with the Troll piercing its heart before it huffed a few times  and collapsed onto the ground. Some villagers ran to Seth to check on him, and I fell to the ground shortly after. It had been beaten. I had won. Then I heard my father’s voice followed by mother’s. “Seth, Reno,” mother  and the village elder ran to where Seth had fallen and father turn and ran towards me. “I am okay, Dad,” I replied. He held me tightly in his arms and continuously thanked the mage beside me. The mage for his part held a mixture of contempt and reluctance to respond. Father didn’t care as I felt his tears on my body “Thank god you’re safe.” “Seth, no, what’s wrong with him. What’s wrong with my child.” “He is okay, he is okay. He is still breathing,” the elder said. “Are you sure?” Mother asked. “Yes, I am sure he will be fine,” the elder replied. He shifted from me to run towards mom with Seth who had now been lifted from the ground and taken back to the village. Dad did a turn has he got half way and came back and put me over his arm. “Dad, I am too old for this.” “You are never too old in my eyes.” The villagers celebrated as I looked across at the Troll King as we passed. I couldn’t help but wonder was it really dead?
