Chapter 15

It felt strange leaving Reno’s side and waving goodbye to mom again. Caremila had protested the entire thing, but after Reno whispered something in her ear. She became far more compliant. That I wonder what he had said.  They tied the guild master to the caravan and ten villagers from our village accompanying beside on horseback. Glancing at them from their amour to clothes as we trotted through the road, they were more like guards. In time they would need a prestigious name to separate them from the rest, for these men were the very best. Caremila was dressed like a princess, and the wagon she sat inside was the best in the town.  I had really become dependent upon Reno, but it was time that I truly proved myself as a hero, like how I was in my last life. This time though however I gripped my fist. Everything will be right. We have been on this path of road for a long time. The road had been changing from paved roads to mere dirt to forgotten trails. My scout, Andu, had not returned since it had been a while, and this didn’t bode well. The men, however, spirits were high and didn’t seem bothered by the changing environment.  I turned to Caremila. “How do we know he isn’t lying?” “I don’t think the guild master enjoys dying.” Caremila raised a hand towards him, and he whimpered under her touch. Only a year had passed, but Caremila potential under Reno had drastically improved her abilities to the point the guild master was nothing more than a nuisance to her now. I had improved as well but not to the level I would consider good enough even the villagers were enough to make the town’s guards before them look like a mockery. “Why did you decide to come along?” Her pearly white teeth revealed. “I am on a diplomatic mission for the Kingdom that Reno will build.” “Kingdom? We are a mere town and some scattered villages.” The guild master chuckled as one glare from Caremila silenced him. “All great things start small, Seth.” “That is true, I guess time will tell.” “Time will tell isn’t that right guild master.” The man nodded in response. “Now you see Seth how important my task is to seeing that goal come through.” Demi, humans, but we didn’t even know what kind. What they looked like from the shoddy stuff the guild master had said. It was almost as if they didn’t exist. All the demi human I had ever met were evil, corrupted and enjoyed the suffering of man. The feeling of us being under manned entering what we could see as enemy territory didn’t make me feel too confident. The front horses came to a stop as the caravan followed. The scout Andu was riding back in haste. From his eyes, terror leaked. Caremila opened the door from her wagon. She drew her sword in one hand and in her other she held fire. The caravan falling suit, drawing swords and arrows as the men focused on the tress to the road behind the guard. “Halt,” I said, looking at the exhausted Anu . “Commander, Seth,” Anu managed. He was breathing through his mouth as he struggled to talk, barely able to hold on to his reigns. “Goblins.” he forced.
