Chapter 18

The goblin prince Sharx spoke to the others. The exchange kept me uneasy and my eye remained trained on him and them for sudden movements. The goblins lowered their weapons as another goblin bigger than the others approached. It wore a mesh of patched clothing and what seemed like jewelry around its neck and arms, with a staff by its side. The two goblins exchanged words as my eyes glanced over towards Caremila, wandering what the hell she was planning to do if she couldn’t talk much to these creatures. After a while, the bestial words stopped as the goblin looked at Caremila. “Humans, no see in long time. What are you doing here? Alliance? Help us get clan strength?” the goblin spoke. The words were clean and easy to follow, but noticing the glow on the staff, I realized it was magic that allowed him to articulate his words. “We seek an alliance to help you gain control of the clans and also from our country Pieranato and our leader, Reno, to yours. Still, we also seek something as well.” “Human’s strong, I send son to see strength. We heard about frightening strength butcher other clans on the battlefield and they are more. Reno, the chief of Human clan?” “Yes, they are many more of us but we need no longer fight each other. Peace.” “Peace. What else do you seek?” “We seek the location of the town of Rothla.” “Yes, help us win, and we help you. Alliance?” the goblin raised his hand out towards Caremila. Caremila returned the gesture and shook his hand. “My name Marlak Toothtee and yours?” “Caremeila of Pieranto.” Despite working together, I didn’t trust a single of the goblins we had been sleeping poor before, but right under there very nose, the situation had gotten even worse. Anything that flickered in my eyesight was a threat at night. We moved from double checking to triple checking our weapons. The goblins helped us find food, but only after them and their wolves tasting first did we trust what was before us. The only one that seemed content was Caremila. Of course she would be. She didn’t understand the ways of goblins. She had gotten to at ease with these goblins as time went on. Going alone to meet their leader and planning. She was a strange one, especially after all the things we had seen. I waited outside the small hut their chief lived in for Caremila to return. I had the men patrol key positions, and we adopted a unique warning sign for the other. We communicated with one another through bird calls and whistles. You could never be too safe. Treachery with monsters was always on the horizon it would only be a matter of when and time. “Mangrala save us,” the guild master said in the wagon as his head showed looking at the goblins that were all around. “You would bring me to such an evil end.” “Mangrala does not save the wicked,” I muttered, “are the unworthy.” “What would you know, farm boy?” More than you would ever know. Caremila popped her head from out of the hut. She held a smile on her face. I waited for her to get in reach before we took a walk away from the wagon and with no listening ears. “What is the next move?” I asked. “Time is slipping and I can’t trust.” “I understand, your worried Seth but we have no other way to get there but this and we can’t overlook this opportunity.” “Opportunity to deal with them, don’t be surprised when he gets what he wants he turns on us. I won’t sacrifice anyone for this ordeal.” “Then how are we going to make alliances if we can’t work with anyone. You trusted the people at the town when we had first arrived. I remember you taking very closely to their side until---.” “Until I saw the true nature of the people, your point Caremila.” “My point is, how can you truly comprehend evil? Alliances are always a means to an end and that is simply what this is a battle tomorrow and a means to an end.” Despite working together, I didn’t trust a single of the goblins we had been sleeping poor before, but right under there very nose, the situation had gotten even worse.
