All nine cavalrymen rolled up into a crouch at once and unleashed their quarrels into the face of the oncoming pikemen. Half a dozen men went down and Tennea screamed for a charge. She leapt over the wall of dead horses, sword hissing as she slashed forward. The pikemen’s line of battle had been cracked by the crossbow volley and the charge had shuddered to a halt. Tennea plunged among them, her blade ripping through muscle and sinew as she sliced into unarmored bodies. Bloodied men threw themselves on the ground in surrender while others dropped their pikes and ran. Tennea’s men were among them, stabbing and hacking with a will, until a ragged volley of quarrels from the rooftop cut into Imperial and Orzan soldiers alike.
