2. We Can't Be Together

1316 Words
Lyra I took my time getting ready for the day. Later, I would be seeing Damon, that's why Selene was in my house to begin with. In the past, she convinced me into thinking that Damon was the one for me while all along, they were setting a trap for me, one that I landed my butt into gullibly. Not again. Not in this life. After a long shower and choosing my clothes for the day, I made sure to apply makeup to complement my silver hair. After confirming in the mirror that I was good to go, I made my way downstairs. Selene was chatting with her phone in the sitting room while my mother busied herself in the kitchen. She was probably chatting with Damon to update him. I scoffed inwardly, loathing my former self. What a fool I had been. How could I fall for such cheap tricks from Selene and Damon without even realising it? I must have been super stupid for that. Selene's eyes squinted when she looked up my way. “Lyra, what the hell are you wearing?" She asked with a frown. I had chosen skinny jeans and tee for the day and not the oversized clothes she had convinced me to wear before. “No man wants his woman flaunting herself and Damon is very protective of you and you know that." Those were the words she said to me while taking me into changing my dressing style. Thinking about it now, maybe she was worried Damon would have fallen in love with me for real and abandoned their plans seeing that I had a better figure and face than her. “Why? Don't I look good?" I asked, plastering a smile as I stood across where she sat. “Of course you look good but…” "My baby is beautiful in anything she wears but today, you look even more beautiful.” My mother commented as she made her way to me and I smiled in return. She had a plate filled with pancakes and a cup of coffee for me. “Have breakfast before leaving," she instructed me and I started digging in after settling down. My mother served Selene her breakfast. Despite not liking the woman, my mother never showed it to Selene. After breakfast, Selene and I left the house and headed to the training ground. “You haven't dyed your hair yet?” Selene asked, making me c**k my brows at her. "I like my natural hair the way it it, Selene. I don't plan on dying it," I replied and I saw malice flash in her eyes before she concealed it. “Why did you change your mind? Last night, you agreed to it," she continued to prob and I simply shrugged. “Damon doesn't like the color of your hair. I thought you wanted to do everything to win him," she pressed and I fought the urge to roll my eyes at her. “I believe if he loves me, he won't care about my hair. After all, it's not my physical appearance that he is attracted to, right Selene?" I didn't miss the uncomfortable feeling that momentarily hooked on her before she masked it with a smile. “Of course not. Damon really likes you." She answered with a fake smile. ‘More like he likes what he can get from me.’ I scoffed inwardly. Selene and I made our way to the training ground where all the pack warriors were training. I was a frequent visitor of the place considering I would go there every morning to cheer on Damon like the love struck puppy I had been. My eyes scanned the area for that familiar yet unfamiliar face and my face fell in disappointment. I couldn't smell him too considering after I woke up, my wolf had disappeared. That was one of the prices I paid for being gullible and utter stupid. “Damon is waiting for you. Let's go see him." Selene said from behind me. I masked my disappointment with a smile and followed her. Damon was a third ranking warrior, the lowest in the food chain. Just like the pack had ranks, the warriors too did. The first in the rank being the strongest, almost rivaling a beta and the third being the weakest. The third rank warriors were responsible for guarding the pack borders. Although our pack was hard to infiltrate, the Alpha still allocated his warriors to guard the borders. To think that I turned down an engagement with an Alpha to settle for a lowly ranked warrior and then he did me over. Damon spotted me as we approached and broke Into a smile; a fake one of course so I flashed him mine. “Lyra, you are here." He said as I stood before him and I nodded. “Selene said you had something to tell me?" I asked and he smiled at me, shyly. In the past I fell for his pretense but not anymore. I had to give it to him though, the man was born an actor. He would have excelled in the entertainment industry for sure and maybe win an Oscar or two. “Well, I wanted to do this in a special way but I can't wait anymore," he said and reached for his slack pockets. How could he wait though? It was the perfect day to trap his victim and embarrass him. I looked around and realized that the warriors were all watching us. Damon knew that I wouldn't dare say no to him in front of everyone. It was the same trick he pulled in our previous life. There was also another reason he chose to do it publicly. Damon pulled a small red velvet box out before he knelt on the floor, his gaze trained on me. A ring laid insíde. I could tell with one glance that it was a cheap one, probably bought at a discount in the flea market. “Lyra," he called, a smile plastered on his lips. I gave him a smile while inwardly cursing him. What a snake! “I know that I am not the perfect man for you but my love for you is genuine," he said and I almost gagged at how fake he sounded. “Lyra, I want to spend the rest of my life loving you and making you happy if you give me the chance. Will you be my girlfriend?” The warriors cheered as Damon's eyes remained fixed on my face. I turned to look at Selene and she gave me a broad smile. I could bet she was fuming inside. After all, Damon and her were lovers. They revealed their secret relationship before they killed me in our previous life. I scoffed inwardly. The corner of my eyes caught the main character of today's show. I smiled inwardly. “This is so beautiful. Damon, I like it.” I squealed and the warriors clapped, others whistling. Damon grinned slyly and rose up, taking my hand in his. I fought the urge to push him away. That would have definitely alerted him. “Thank you, Lyra, you have made me the happiest man alive.” Damon said and I watched from the corner of my eyes as he walked away. Just what I wanted. “Damon, although the ring is beautiful and your words are the sweetest I have ever heard…” I paused, creating a perfect stage for my next words. “... I can't accept your proposal." I breathed out, sending him an apologetic look. He froze and looked surprised, shocked even. Selene grabbed my hand and gave me a disapproving look. I shrugged her hand out of mine and turned to look at Damon. “I'm sorry, Damon, but we can't be together," before I walked away.
