23 Kire woke up early the next morning after having a restless sleep full of odd dreams filled with blue rabbits, pink comets, and flaming swords. After lying in bed for a while, he trudged downstairs for breakfast. He mumbled a good morning to his mother. “Good morning, Kire,” she said. “Sweetheart, are you sure everything is okay?” He mustered up the most genuine smile he could, kissed her on the cheek, and said, “Of course. I promise I’d let you know if there was something wrong.” Emma smiled reluctantly and tentatively said, “Okay.” After finishing his breakfast of oatmeal and chatting with his mother a bit, trying to reassure her and get her to quit worrying about him, Kire left for school.
