Chance's POV
“Well, he doesn't seem to be that bad,” Hank says following me out of the kitchen.
“Yeah.” Greg agrees.
“That's how we all are until we get what we want.” I snapped, still not liking the fact that I just left my little sister with an unknown guy.
“You know for someone named Chance, you don't give much do you?” I hear one of the cheerleaders and Fate's friends say.
I rolled my eyes, “Why do I even bother explaining?”
“What? It's true?” she continues.
“Jas, calm down,” Greg says, pulling her back. Oh yeah, she's his girlfriend.
“No,” Jas says and walked up in front of me, getting in my face, mad. “It's about time that your sister gets some time for herself. You've been all over her business since you were kids, I mean, c'mon Chance, grow up! Ken and Fate are perfectly happy, you're on the way to being the next captain of the team, and let's admit it, every girl is crazy about you...” She crossed her arms over her chest, “Don't you think it's about time that Hope gets her own little happy ending of some sort?”
I sighed and walked past her, “It's not that I don't want that.” I said walking toward the stairs.
It was supposed to be off limits, but not to the team and the cheerleaders, especially not my sisters. It was the safest place in the house.
We went to the game room where the seniors were already starting our own private party.
“What is it then?” she snap as we come through the door.
I shrugged and turned to her, realizing our friends were right behind her waiting for an answer as well.
“You don't know how hard it is to be in my place guys...” I just said, remembering my dad's stories of my mom being abducted.
I know the girls know about it as well, Aunt J would have told them.
“Then make us understand,” Greg says standing beside his girlfriend.
I shook my head, “Forget about it.” I said turning away and walking toward the table of seniors.
“There he is...” one of the seniors slurred.
“Hey...” I grinned sitting with them, glancing at the table, and saw the empty bottles and the cigarette b*tts, “Been here long, I see.”
They all chuckled as Toby took a drag of his cigarette and push its lit end on the ashtray.
“So, we heard from a little birdie that our little casanova broke up with the big fish?”
I sighed and shrugged on my seat, “I don't want to talk about it guys...”
“What?” they laughed, “You always talk about every conquest, you're our little Napoleon.”
“What's with all the little comments?” I asked, annoyed.
They turned to me, brow raised.
“You know why the old team captain put up with you?” Tony leaned forward.
“Cause I’m a little hothead with huge potential?” I smirked.
“No,” he says, “cause you were the team's breadwinner being the queen bee's eye candy.”
I chuckled, “That's such a lame joke guys.”
“Who says we were joking?” one of them asked and stood up.
I stared at him, I knew I can take him. But I didn't need this mess with my little sisters downstairs. I knew them enough to know that when worried they'll stress themselves crazy.
“So does this mean I’m kicked out of the team?”
“Kicked out of the team?” Toby snorted, “How can we do that to you? Everyone thinks you're the upcoming team captain who will lead us to the championship.”
I shook my head, “I can't do that if you boys think that I’m nothing but an eye candy and a money maker.”
I stood up and was about to leave, my friends behind me were staring at the seniors surprised and with disgust.
We were, after all, part of the best team in the country, and to learn that I was only part of this team to get money from some i***t pig in the government left a foul taste in my mouth.
“Well, we're glad you agree, 'cause we don't want you in the team anyway.” I hear Toby say.
“And once you’re off the team, those sweet a*s sisters of yours will be up for grabs,” I stopped, “and I’ll make sure to grab one and hold on tight.”
I turned to them with a glare as they exchanged high-fives.
“You did not just say that,” I said under my breath.
“Ooh, did we anger the big brother?” they teased.
“Ken won't let you near Fate and Hope-”
“Hope is all alone with the new guy.” Toby smirked, “What do you really know about him? I mean he's new. Practically a stranger. Don't you agree that she's better off with one of us?”
“I'd rather die than have that.”
“Even if it means a sure slot on the team?” Toby smirked. “Give me your sister and I assure you, you'll be this year's team captain.”
“I'm not that desperate.” I spat, “Good luck winning regionals without me.”
“Or half the team,” Greg added.
“You can't leave, you have contracts.” Toby snaps, obviously not happy with how the tables had turned.
“One we'd be happy to void once the school hears about everything you said,” Hank says.
“Let's go guys,” I said walking up to my real friends.
“It doesn't mean you are out of trouble, you little piece of sh*t.” I hear Toby say, as he tossed the table aside and making way for him to ram to me.
I got knocked on the floor, surprised.
Toby was one of the best players we got, the only reason he got the captain position was because he was my senior.
I tried to get out of his grip while blocking his swinging punches on my side.
The other seniors blocked my friends while the girls were screaming at Toby to stop.
I bit my lower lip fighting off the pain, while I still tried to pull him off me.
But suddenly I felt him lift himself up and brought down a swing on my face.
The hit was so strong that I was seeing black and white for a few seconds.
Suddenly I was on my stomach, my arm twisted behind me.
“Let's see what you'll do with that good arm of yours,” he whispered as he twisted my arms and we all heard a snap before I was groaning and screaming in pain.
Then I was wet all over and as if it wasn't enough, I felt them roughly pick me up, even with my broken shoulder and drag me to the terrace.
The walk of shame.
I remembered when they did it to one of the old players after he was in a car accident and could barely walk for a week. They left him sitting on the ledge of the terrace without his crutches and wheelchair, everyone was laughing at him after the seniors shouted for the world to hear how pathetic and a waste he was on the team, and finally dropped the bomb that he was kicked out of the team.
If it wasn’t for the promise of the former team captain of watching over my sisters, I wouldn’t have joined the team. They dragged me on the edge and I hear them shouting to the people below.
“Is this the kind of captain you want your team to lead you to victory?” I hear Toby shout. “A drunkard with a hot head?”
I looked down and saw the people below staring at me, with pity, disgust, and with anger. I heard him scream more lies but I didn't care, I'm not giving him a chance to even stare at my sisters.
“And how he rules over you, telling people to stay away from his sister, when it's all because he's in love with them!” he sneered.
What the hell? I thought. That was just gross.
People below gasped.
“You liar-” I shouted and tried to punch him with my good arm but he moved out of the way and pushed me.
Everything happened so fast.
I remember being pushed, tumble back, and... the walk of shame. The ledge.
I forced to open my eyes and see Fate hovering over me, behind her, blurry as it may have been, I knew it was the terrace where I stood not too long ago.
Realizing what happened, it was like the world turned the volume up and I can hear Fate screaming my name.
“Chance! Chance wake up!” I hear Fate.
“Fate...” I whispered.
“Chance, c'mon, wake up... Gary's on his way.”
“Fate's what- Chance!”
I tried to turn my head to the voice of our little sister. I closed my eyes fighting the pain.
“Chance, what happened?” I heard her ask, with the tone of her voice, she was on the verge of crying. “Chance, wake up... big brother...”
“Shh... I'm ok...”
“Sh*t.” I hear Gary hiss beside me. “What happened?”
“I don't know!” Fate snapped, panicking. “Damn, I knew it, we shouldn't have come!”
“Shut up,” I said in a whisper.
“Chance...” I hear Hope release a relieved sigh. “Chance...”
“He good?” I managed to ask, not wanting to make the girls worry more.
She stifled a laugh, “How would I know, you dragged me and Fate here.” I felt a rumble in my chest causing me more pain, but I refused to show my sisters. “Chance!"
“I'm ok... I'll be ok...” I mumbled, half asleep by this time.
“I'm calling Aunt Jean.” I hear Fate sob as she dialed the phone.
“Tell her to go straight home,” Gary says.
“What? We need to take him to the hospital!” Hope snapped.
“No, he needs your mom.”
“What can a mom do?” Fate snapped, “She's a preschool teacher.”
“Believe me, the princess is more than a preschool teacher.”
“Princess?” my sisters asked.
Princess? I thought.
He sighed, “I should let her explain.”
I tried to open my eyes and caught a blurry vision of Gary looking up. “The moon is almost full, she'll be relieved of that.”
Then, I felt him put his arms under me.
“Gary, you can't-”
“He's stronger than you think,” Gary says. “And believe me, once I find out what happened here everyone who's involved will be more than dead.”
I can feel power and anger on his vice, but before I can glance at the effect of it on the people around us I blacked out.
