Diana's Pov
“What? Infertile…” I trembled, “What are you talking about? I'm… I'm not infertile.”
I glanced at Zara who was snickering at me. She extricated herself from Aldrich's arms and walked towards me, leaning down to whisper in my ears.
“Everyday, I fed you tea. That tea that your maid always brought to you, it was laced with a drug that made you infertile. Poor girl, she did not know that she was feeding her mistress poison.” Zara chuckled, stepping back with her hands covering her mouth.
“After sleeping with so many men, you found out that you were infertile and yet, you kept the truth away from clansmen! Diana, you shouldn't have done that!” Zara cried out, her eyes began to get watery.
“Ah…” I let out a soft cry, my hands went directly to my stomach, “Ah! Ah!” My screams got louder and louder. More people began to snicker. Everywhere, I could hear their voices, ridiculing me, mocking me.
“No. No, no, no, this can't be true! It can't be! Zara, I might still be dreaming right? Aldrich, Aldrich my love, this is all a joke isn't it? I've never been infertile and you know it. Aldrich come on…” I moved closer, trying to touch his arm but he slapped my hands away.
The brute force he used sent me flying back and crashing into the big five tier cake that had been made for us. My wedding dress got mixed up with cake and butter, my intricate hairdo splattered with red cake fondant.
A strangled cry escaped my lips, tears welled up in my eyes, pain and betrayal made twists and turns inside me.
“I trusted you, Zara. I trusted you all, I gave my title to you just to prove how much I loved you, but you stabbed me in the back.” My throat constricted.
“You were the desperate one here, Diana. It's not my fault you were actually so stupid.” Zara barked.
Zara was right, I was indeed foolish. A woman who had the things she wanted the most at her feet gave them out willingly, I really was the most foolish. But how could everything have gone wrong so quickly?
I couldn't bear to stay and hear the words of ridicule from my pack members, the Alpha mark had been transferred to Aldrich already and there was no way to get it back.
Trembling with each step, I clutched my gown and forced my legs to take me out of there. Out of the eyes of people who silently mocked and judged me. I bypassed my most trusted maid, she had a look of horror on her face. But I couldn't say anything, I had my own horror to deal with.
My legs were weak, they felt like hell. I didn't even know where I was running to, but I just ran. Ran into the woods, branches scraped my bare feet and nicked at my skin, but I couldn't feel it, the only pain I felt came from my heart.
I tripped over a rotten log and slammed my face into the dirt, my nose took the brunt of the fall and it spurted blood. It was broken. At that, I finally broke down. Everything was going wrong, ever since my father died, nothing went well for me!
I finally found the love of my life but he betrayed me and left me for my best friend! I had given up everything to him, I saved him, I nursed him back to health when he was sick! How could he repay me back like this?!
Lost in all my sorrow, I barely registered the laughter that came from a distance. It could have been anyone, but I was too exhausted to care. As the voices got closer, I instantly recognised them, it was Aldrich and Zara. Both of them were walking unhurriedly, weaving through the trees together.
“How…?” My voice stopped in my throat, and I swallowed them down.
“If it isn't our ‘luna’, you look so dirty with your dress stained, Diana, it's making me want to cry for you.” Zara taunted.
“What are you doing here? Haven't you done enough?!” I screamed, my voice echoing in the forest.
“Enough? Oh, Diana, we haven't even started anything yet. You see, we both wanted to give you a gift, a gift to commemorate the short life that you and Aldrich spent together but then I thought, how about we give it to you ourselves? So we came looking for you, aren't we good?” Zara squinted her eyes, a glint passed through her orbs, a glint I fully understood what it meant.
“W… what are you doing?!” I glanced at the knife that Zara held in her hand.
“Stop! Don't come any closer!” I begged, shifting back quickly, using my hands to crawl on the ground. Zara grinned and threw the knife, missing my face by an inch.
I gasped, stood up and began to run, their laughter echoed behind me and that's when I knew that it was a chase. I was the prey and they were the predators.
I ran through the forest, twisting and turning until I saw a clearing. I smiled happily and burst into the clearing only to see…
“A cliff.” I murmured, my eyes blank.
A few seconds later, Zara and Aldrich reached where I was. Aldrich was holding a long sword, the sword I had gifted from one of my father's treasures. He looked so happy when I gave it to him, his smile was so genuine, or was it? Was it all just my wishful thinking?
“Hahaha,” I laughed, tears trailing down my eyes like a waterfall, “Hahahaha! So… You want to end this, don't you? You followed me all the way here to kill me, you don't want anything else to stand in your way. Aldrich,” one last time, I turned towards Aldrich.
“Just answer me this. All this time, your smiles towards me, your actions, your love, were they all fake? None of it was real?”
Aldrich's expression was cold, devoid of all the warmth I once believed was there.
“Yes, every single moment was a lie. You were nothing more than a means to an end.” Aldrich said, his voice was as cold and sharp as the sword he held.
My heart shattered completely at his words. I had clung to a sliver of hope that maybe, there was really a time when he loved me just as I loved him. But it was just a cruel deception.
“You're a monster.” I screamed.
“Call me what you want, but this ends now!”
Zara's laughter rang out, she stepped forward and before I could react Aldrich lunged at me with the sword. The blade sliced through the air and I felt a searing pain in my abdomen. My breath hitched, I found myself stumbling backwards, my vision blurring.
“If I could survive… I would make sure… That I get my revenge against the both of you.”
The ground disappeared underneath my feet, I fell backwards, plummeting to the ground. Tears streamed from my eyes, the wind wiping and taking them to Aldrich's palm.
My last thoughts were not of love and loyalty but betrayal and pain. The impact came swiftly, pain exploding through my body and then everything went dark. I breathed my last.
