Chapter 18: The Truth Between Them

802 Words
Morning arrived slowly in Paris. A pale golden light slipped through Isabelle’s curtains, warming the quiet apartment. Normally mornings felt peaceful to her, but today her thoughts were restless. The dream from the night before refused to leave her mind. The river. Daniel. And that mysterious voice. Isabelle sat at the small kitchen table with a cup of coffee, staring at her phone. She had barely slept after waking up. Finally, a message appeared. Daniel: Can we meet today? I think we need to talk. Her heart beat faster. She typed back quickly. Isabelle: Yes. Where? His reply came almost immediately. Daniel: The café near the river. Around noon. Isabelle knew exactly which place he meant. The small café where they had met once before, not far from the quiet paths along the Seine. She looked out the window at the waking city. Something told her that today would change everything. --- By noon, the streets of Paris were full of life. Tourists wandered along the sidewalks, street musicians played cheerful melodies, and the warm scent of fresh bread drifted out from nearby bakeries. Isabelle arrived at the café first. She chose a table outside where she could see the river flowing gently nearby. A few minutes later, Daniel appeared. He looked more serious than usual. When he sat down across from her, she noticed the dark circles under his eyes. “You didn’t sleep either, did you?” Isabelle asked softly. Daniel gave a tired smile. “No. Not really.” For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Isabelle leaned forward slightly. “You know something,” she said quietly. Daniel looked at the table before finally nodding. “Yes. I do.” The air between them suddenly felt heavy. Daniel took a deep breath. “That voice we heard in the dream,” he began, “I think I know who it belongs to.” Isabelle’s stomach tightened. “Who?” Daniel hesitated before answering. “Camille.” Isabelle blinked in surprise. “Camille? The researcher?” Daniel nodded slowly. “She was part of the original study I told you about. Actually… she helped design a lot of it.” Isabelle felt a strange chill. “But how could she be inside our dreams?” “That’s the part I’m still trying to understand,” Daniel admitted. He pulled a small folder from his bag and placed it on the table. “These are some documents from the study,” he explained. Isabelle opened the folder carefully. Inside were printed pages filled with scientific notes and diagrams. Her eyes caught one sentence written near the top of a page. Experimental dream-link technology. She looked up at Daniel. “Dream-link?” she asked. Daniel nodded. “The study wasn’t just about emotions or psychology. They were testing whether two people’s dreams could be connected through brain-wave synchronization.” Isabelle stared at him. “That sounds like science fiction.” “That’s what I thought too,” Daniel said quietly. “But now… I’m not so sure.” He pointed to another page. “They ran small experiments years ago. Most of them failed.” “But ours didn’t?” Isabelle asked. Daniel shook his head slowly. “I don’t think it did.” Isabelle leaned back in her chair, trying to process everything. “So you’re saying someone might actually be influencing our dreams?” Daniel’s voice was calm, but serious. “Yes.” Isabelle thought of the voice from the dream again. You’re both stronger than we predicted. A cold feeling settled in her chest. “Why would Camille do that?” she asked. Daniel looked toward the river for a moment before answering. “I think she wants to prove the experiment worked.” Isabelle frowned. “Using us?” “Possibly.” The thought made Isabelle uncomfortable. She closed the folder slowly. “So what do we do?” Daniel looked back at her. For the first time that day, his expression softened. “We find out the truth.” Isabelle studied his face. Despite the strange situation, one thing was clear. Daniel wasn’t afraid. And somehow, that gave her courage too. --- Not far away, inside a quiet office building, Camille watched a new set of data appear on her computer screen. Two brainwave patterns glowed on the display. One labeled Daniel. The other Isabelle. The signals were stronger than ever. Camille smiled slightly. “Fascinating,” she murmured. She leaned closer to the screen. “They’re starting to understand.” But that didn’t worry her. In fact… It made the experiment even more interesting. Outside the window, the afternoon sunlight brightened the skyline of Paris. And somewhere in the city, two people unknowingly stood at the center of a discovery that could change everything.
