Chapter 20: The Experiment Revealed

786 Words
The laboratory fell into complete silence. Isabelle’s heart pounded as she and Daniel slowly turned to face Camille. The glow from the computer monitors cast soft blue light across the room, making everything feel tense and unreal. Camille stood calmly in the doorway, her expression almost amused. “Well,” she said gently, stepping into the room, “I suppose the mystery couldn’t stay hidden forever.” Daniel frowned. “You’ve been watching us,” he said. Camille shrugged lightly. “Of course I have. You’re both the most successful result this experiment has ever produced.” Isabelle felt a chill run through her. “Result?” she repeated. Camille walked over to one of the computer screens and tapped a few keys. The graphs on the monitor began to move, showing waves of activity. “These,” she said, pointing at the screen, “are your brainwave patterns while you sleep.” Isabelle looked closer. Two sets of waves moved across the display in perfect rhythm. Daniel crossed his arms. “You connected our dreams,” he said firmly. Camille smiled. “Not exactly.” She turned to face them. “The connection was already forming on its own.” Isabelle blinked. “What?” Camille leaned against the desk. “The original study was designed to test whether emotional resonance between two people could create synchronized dreaming,” she explained. “Most scientists believed it was impossible.” Daniel spoke quietly. “But it wasn’t.” Camille shook her head slowly. “No. It wasn’t.” She pointed again at the screen. “When you both participated in the early tests years ago, your brainwave signatures reacted unusually well to the equipment. But at the time, the connection wasn’t strong enough.” Isabelle tried to follow. “So what changed?” Camille smiled slightly. “You met.” The words hung in the air. Daniel glanced at Isabelle. Camille continued. “The moment you two started interacting in real life, the emotional signal between your brains became stronger. Much stronger than we predicted.” Isabelle felt both fascinated and uneasy. “So the dreams… they’re happening because of our emotions?” “In simple terms, yes,” Camille replied. Daniel’s voice became serious. “But you interfered with them.” Camille didn’t deny it. “I observed them,” she corrected. “And that voice in the dream?” Isabelle asked. Camille folded her arms. “That was me testing whether your minds could detect outside signals.” Daniel’s eyes widened. “You were actually speaking inside our dream?” Camille nodded. “And you both heard me perfectly.” She looked almost impressed. “That proves the dream-link technology works better than we ever imagined.” Isabelle shook her head slowly. “You’re treating our lives like a science project.” Camille’s expression became more thoughtful. “History is full of discoveries that began with experiments,” she said calmly. Daniel stepped forward. “But we didn’t agree to this.” Camille met his gaze. “You agreed years ago when you signed the research participation forms.” Daniel’s jaw tightened. “That was for basic sleep studies.” Camille smiled faintly. “Science evolves.” Isabelle felt anger rising. “You should have told us the truth.” Camille looked at her for a moment. “You’re right,” she admitted. “But if I had told you everything, the results might have changed.” Daniel sighed heavily. “So what happens now?” Camille glanced back at the glowing monitors. The brainwave patterns were still perfectly synchronized. “That,” she said quietly, “depends on you.” Isabelle frowned. “What do you mean?” Camille turned toward them again. “The connection between your minds is growing stronger every night,” she explained. “Soon, your dreams won’t just be shared.” Daniel looked confused. “What else could they become?” Camille’s voice dropped slightly. “They could become controllable.” Isabelle felt a cold shiver. “Controllable… by who?” Camille smiled mysteriously. “That’s exactly what I’m trying to discover.” The room felt colder suddenly. Daniel looked at Isabelle. For the first time since they started investigating, the situation felt truly dangerous. Their dreams weren’t just strange anymore. They were becoming something powerful. And someone was studying every moment of it. Outside the laboratory windows, the night lights of Paris shimmered in the distance, peaceful and unaware of the secret experiment unfolding inside. Isabelle slowly closed the research folder in her hands. She realized something important. Their story had started with romance. But now it had become something far more complicated. And far more unpredictable.
