The hospital was too white. Too bright.
Leo sat on the cold bed, clutching her stomach. The baby kicked. Hard. Like it knew something was wrong.
Across the room, Selena sat on another bed. Perfect hair. Perfect nails. Not a single bead of sweat.
Damien was pacing. Back and forth. His wolf was so close to the surface his eyes kept flashing gold.
“Test them. Both of them. Right now,” he snapped at the doctor.
“Sir,” the doctor adjusted his glasses. “We can only run one paternity test per day. The lab is backed up.”
“What?!” Damien slammed his fist on the counter. Glass cracked.
Leo flinched. “It’s okay,” she whispered. “Tomorrow is fine.”
Selena laughed. “See? The Omega is so understanding. So poor.” She rubbed her flat stomach. “My baby deserves answers today, Damien.”
“Don’t touch me.” Damien yanked his arm away. “The test is for Leo first.”
Selena’s smile dropped. “Excuse me?”
“I said—”
Leo stood up too fast. The room spun. Black spots.
“ Leo!” Damien caught her before she hit the floor.
She was light. Too light. “Baby... the baby...”
"Doctor!" Damien roared. "Her vitals! Now!"
30 minutes later.
Aria was on oxygen. IV in her arm.
"Stress and malnutrition," the doctor said quietly to Damien. "And she hasn't been eating. The pregnancy is at risk."
Damien's jaw ticked. "She will eat. She will rest. Or I'll burn this hospital down."
He turned to Selena. "You. Get out."
Selena didn't move. Instead she pulled out a folder. "The lab called. They did me a favor. Rushed my test."
She opened it. Held up the paper.
PATERNITY RESULT: 99.99% MATCH
FATHER: DAMIEN BLACKWOOD
Damien froze.
Leo’s eyes opened on the bed. She saw the paper.
Her heart cracked.
"Damien..." she whispered.
But the name on the top of the report was smudged. Blurred. Like someone spilled water on it on purpose.
Selena leaned down to Leo. Sweet voice. Dead eyes.
"Game over, diner girl."
