Chapter 73 A Public Rebuff

830 Words

There was no way James could talk his way out of this now. He had to give an explanation—either publicly call off the engagement and sever ties with the White family, or deny the rumors of having someone else and propose to Lori right then and there. Nearly everyone held their breath, waiting for James' response. His gaze flickered to Clara, who stood there ghostly pale, her slight frame trembling like a leaf in the wind. Finally, he turned to Robert with an apologetic smile. "Marriage is a serious matter. I've just taken the reins at Lancaster Group and want to focus entirely on my career. I'd prefer to wait before settling down." Lori went sheet-white, her eyes rimmed red with unshed tears. She never imagined James would publicly reject their union—right here, in front of everyone.
