14. Bitches
Third person’s POV
After accomplishing their first mission to find Selene, Gabriella and Daniel made it their second quest to help her get her memories back. They knew this would be a long process and it wouldn’t be as easy as it may sound. The couple knew who Diana really was and the temptation to tell her was big.
They also had to weigh every word they said so as to not slip anything accidentally. They sacrificed too much to prevent the doom of the world and didn't want to waste it.
At first Diana was understanding and patient. She had dreams showing memories but as soon as she woke up she would forget what she saw. As the weeks passed by and no real memory was recovered, Diana started to get frustrated. She felt it in her heart that it was vital to get her memories back and the fact that it wasn’t happening made her worried and the worry sometimes turned to anger and frustration.
She tried to trick Daniel and Gabriella into telling her something by asking them about their past, their lives. And she almost succeeded a few times but Gabriella sealed her lips on time.
This situation brought tension between the three of them and Diana started thinking about leaving on a lone journey hoping that it will help her clear her mind.
Gabriella was getting worried that Selene didn’t fully understand the consequences of revealing the truth about her identity before the right time and when she almost fell in Diana’s trap, she lost it. The women had a huge fight that ended in tears for both of them. None of the she-wolves were willing to look at the situation from the other’s point of view. After a night of them both crying Diana voiced her idea of leaving and Gabriella agreed that it might be a good idea.
Not that Gabby wanted her to leave, she cared deeply about Diana, but she was hurt by Diana’s words.
*flashback*
“You only keep me here to make sure the prophecy will be fulfilled the way you want it to. But the truth is that you hate me. You hate me because I am the reason you lost the love of your life. You lost your Luna title and now you’re stuck here living as a lone wolf. Stuck with one person who will never be as good as the one you want.
Daniel hates me because whatever I have done made him your second choice and he knows he will never be your number one. He lost his brother, too but all he does is tend to your wounds.
I get it. You had a bad life because of me but I don’t even know how I am the reason for this. And yet you refuse to tell me!”
“You are so ungrateful. You act like a teenager, like a b***h to the only people who showed you nothing but hospitality and friendship”
The argument between the women went on and on.
The emotions in Daniel’s eyes as Diana said those words told Gabriella that some of her words were true. Those words made her feel like a bad mate, but what’s worse - it made her see she was the worst friend to Danny. He didn’t try to argue Selene’s words and when Gabriella said she needed space and wanted to spend the night alone he just sighed and left.
That made Gabriella agree with Diana’s idea of leaving, but her heart felt heavy and in reality she hated herself for focusing on the fact that her words hurt her instead of realizing that she never denied hating Diane. Selene on the other hand, felt bad for what she had said and knew that she overreacted but both of their egos wouldn’t let them voice their real feelings.
“I guess that’s it then. Goodbye” Diana said and extended her hand for Gabriella to shake. Danny was nowhere to be found in the house, not that Gabriella went to look for him. She was too ashamed and felt like she didn’t deserve him. Gabriella shook her hand, not meeting Selene's eyes but as she was letting it go, something caught her attention.
“Look” Gabriella gasped and pointed to the tattoo with the prophecy. The words “care and friendship” were fading away. The she-wolves were shocked and didn’t know what to think about this.
“You need to stay," Gabriella said, still not meeting Diane's eyes.
“No, I don’t want to be a burden for you anymore. I caused you more than enough trouble. I am sure once my memories start coming back, the tattoo will be recovered.”
“No, I want you to stay because I really care about you as a friend. I am sorry that all I was talking about was the prophecy and complaining about my losses. I am sorry that I made you feel that it was the only thing I cared about. It is not” Gabriella said but this time her eyes were locked with Diane’s. Diane searched for the truth in Gabby’s eyes and saw that she was sincere.
“I am also sorry for what I said. I was wrong to mess up with your relationship and damage it. You were right, I was selfish and childish” Diane said, ashamed.
“I think I know what might help you with your memories, but first I need to talk to Danny,” Gabriella said. Dianne nodded and headed to her room.
Gabriella went upstairs to the bedroom she shared with Danny. She knew there was almost no chance to find him there but she needed to start her search from somewhere. She was right. He wasn’t there and there was no indication that he had been. She knew his smell well and tried to locate it. It wasn’t very strong which only meant that he stayed wherever he went last night and never went out.
It’s been almost 24 hours since the fight happened and she became worried.
Her heart raced as her mind was filled with thoughts of Danny being disappointed in her or worse - hating her. She knew she had been selfish and took too much time for her to see what she truly had before her. Sure, she loved Danny, she was in love with him but she never made an effort to show him how grateful she was to have him by her side. And the thought that it might be too late made Caly whine.
She caught on his scent and followed it to their office. She stood in front of the door trying to collect all of her courage to face him. She wasn’t sure if she should knock or just go in. He might send her away if she had knocked but she also didn’t want to invade his space. She remembered that she was the one who asked to be left alone so she decided to just go in. Gabriella took a deep breath in and gently opened the door and entered the office.
Daniel knew Gabriella was on the other side of the door as soon as she got there but he didn’t move from his seat. He felt helpless, his heart was heavy and beating painfully in his heart. Diane’s words made him realize that Gabriella didn’t only lose her fated mate and the love of her life but also her Luna title.
Danny smiled to himself. She would have been an amazing Luna. She was an orphan and her childhood wasn’t easy but she never gave up. She studied hard and worked harder, she was smart and kind and considerate, she deserved to be Luna but instead she was stuck here with him. Yes, they were together, they marked each other and he knew she loved him but was she in love with him?
Maybe she developed those feelings for him because she needed to fill the emptiness in her heart. He knew he would always be her second best but was he really? What if their relationship happened only because they were forced to be isolated from the world?
Gabriella entered the office but Daniel couldn’t look her in the eyes. She took a deep breath.
“Daniel,” she said softly, almost in a whisper. He leaned his head back and put his face in his palms. His eyes were filled with tears but he didn’t want her to see. Not because he was ashamed to show her his weakness but because he didn’t want her to feel sorry for him.
“I am sorry Gabby” he said defeated. Gabriella looked at him confused.
“Danny,...” she said. She took a step towards him but he stopped her.
“No, Gabby. You don't have to feel guilty about the way you feel. I knew what I was getting into when we started this relationship” Gabriella tried to say something but Danny continued “And I meant every word I said. I am OK with being your second best. I am OK with not being the one for you. But I was selfish and didn’t realize how isolated you might have felt being stuck here with only one person.” Gabby took a deep breath to collect her thoughts. She felt so guilty for making him feel this way. The one person who had her back all these years. She tried to speak again but Danny was so lost in his thoughts that he interrupted her again.
“I failed you, Gabby. I am so sorry.” The only reason Danny didn’t cry was because he felt so empty and cold inside that he didn’t think his body had the energy to produce tears. Roden was a whimpering mess in his head.
Gabriella took a few steps towards him and he didn’t seem to notice. She kneeled in front of him and took his hands in hers to uncover his face. He didn’t object nor looked at her.
“Look at me, Danny” she pleaded but he didn’t, so she squeezed his hands softly and that did the trick. But the emptiness she saw in his eyes broke her. Her tears started falling freely but she couldn’t let herself break down before she had said what she needed to say.
She stood up and sat on his lap straddling him so she could be on his eye level. She let go of his hands to cup his face and they fell limply on the sides of his body.
“Oh goddess, what have I done?” Gabriella cried. “Danny, please listen to me. You haven’t failed me. You had my back, all these years, you helped me heal and you put me first selflessly. You have been nothing but kind, caring and considerate to me. If I didn’t have you I would have died, Danny. If I lose you now I would die.
I never made an effort to tell you how much I appreciate you. I never thought of telling you how much you mean to me. I am so selfish that I took you for granted. I don’t deserve you” she said and she looked away. She was too ashamed to look the man in the eyes. Gabrielle let go of his face and added: “You are not my second best, Danny. You are another best. You are my present best and my future best. I never felt isolated with you. Your love helped me feel complete again. You are my family.” She just voiced the feelings that she just now realized.
Gabriella couldn’t take the pain anymore, she wanted to hide and cry her heart out. She lifted her body from Daniel’s in an attempt to stand up but his arms held her hips firmly and held her in place. He slowly moved one hand up her back and pulled her closer to his body and hugged her.
“Do you mean what you said?” he whispered and she nodded against his neck. He buried his nose in her neck too and inhaled deeply while tightening his arms around her body, bringing her closer.
“I can’t lose you, Gabby. You are my world.” He said, still inhaling her scent as if it was the source of his life
“I am not going anywhere, baby. I am yours - body, soul and heart.” She said lifting her head from his neck so she could look into his eyes, Daniel captured her lips with his in a hungry kiss. He needed to feel her. He needed her to love him, he needed to know she was his and Roden also needed the same. The wolf came forward in Daniel’s mind so he could feel his mate through his human’s form but he let Danny have full control, Roden was just enjoying the ‘ride’.
Their lovemaking was passionate and needy as they both poured their feelings into this heated session of passion.
