18. Betta duties

Gabriella’s POV

The morning of our first day of being betas was eventless. We had breakfast together and then left the pups with Zane’s nanny - Roberta. Me and Danny joined the others at the office so they can brief us of everything that’s been going on all these years. Even though we knew most of it since Danny kept in touch with Cary. 

We took a look at Nate’s businesses and he gave us access to his documents and bank accounts. It wasn’t long before Danny and I had some ideas of improving the income, we were the geeks after all. We made some plans and arranged an office for the both of us, next to the alpha’s one. 

Soon it was noon and we headed to the playground with some packed food to have lunch with the pups. The twins seemed to be doing alright although I noticed that Lorelei was mostly observing the other kids rather than playing with them. 

After lunch me and Danny were assigned to lead the afternoon training. We changed into our training attire and headed to the training grounds. Danny addressed the crowd to gain their attention and we started with the warm up.

After the warm up we announced it was time for sparring. They separated in pairs and me and Danny moved around to give pointers to the pack members to improve their techniques. 

I was observing a she-wolf sparring with a male wolf. She was very flexible and fast. Her moves were cat-like. I was so engulfed in watching her that I didn’t feel that someone approached me.

“So, the Alpha kicked you out of his bed and you ran to warm his brother’s?” someone said in my ear and I turned around.

“Ben” I hissed “What do you want?”

“What I always wanted. I want you to leave this pack and never come back. I was so happy to not see your face all these years” he spat

“Too bad, I am here to stay,” I answered calmly. “Now, please go back to sparring. Where is your partner?”

“Right here, mutt” I turned around and saw Rob

“We don’t take orders from you” Ben said

“Oh, but you will. I can command you but I have a better idea. How about we make a deal?” I said with a smirk. Rob was about to refuse but Ben interrupted him.

“What deal?”

“I will spar with you and when I win you will do double training for three months and I will do your schedule and training schemes.”

“What do we get when you lose? Because there is no way you will beat us.” Ben took the bait

“Are you going to spar with the both of us together?” Rob asked

“You can bring the rest of your gang from the orphanage if you are scared. I will leave the pack if I lose to you” As soon as I said that two more of my bullies joined them. The fifth one, I think his name was Trent, refused to join them saying he will not go against his betta. I guess he grew some brains.

“Accepted. Four males against one female. This won’t take long”

“Just like the old times” I said. “Let’s begin”

“What are you doing?” Danny growled in my head

“Defending my betta position and getting some sweet revenge for my past”

“I don’t like this”

“Just trust me” I said and winked at him to reduce some of his worries. He knew these goons aren’t a match for me but his possessiveness was kicking in again. I know he had the urge to protect me but he would support me in everything.

A small crowd gathered around us. The goons surrounded me and I focused on my senses. Caly came forward in my head sharing control with me. I felt someone shift behind me and their wolf lounged at me. I turned around at the last second, and hit the wolf’s windpipe making him whimper and shift immediately unable to breathe. He will heal fast, I knew how hard to hit. 

The other three ran towards me in their human form. They tried to kick and hit me but I blocked most of their attempts. The hits that they managed to land on me weren’t that strong. 

That went on for some time and I saw they were getting tired. I decided it was time to stop playing and instead of just defending myself, to start attacking them. Ben lounged at me trying to hit my face, I dodged and used his body as a lever to jump behind the gang. The momentum sent Ben to the ground but he recovered quickly. By the time he was ready for another attempt to hit me, I was successful in eliminating one of the guys by knocking him out.

It was only Rob and Ben left now. I focused on their body language and it was easy to predict their moves. I was left with Ben but I didn’t want him to pass out. He was already tired so I started my attacks.

Hit after hit, I was so fast he didn’t know how to handle it. My last kick knocked him on the ground and I landed on top of him and hit his chest. I pulled him up, he was barely standing on his feet.

“Submit” I said, no command in my voice

Ben refused. I kicked his knee and that made him fall on his knees in front of me.

“Submit” I said again. He refused. I lifted my fist ready to hit his nose and knock him out but his eyes glazed over, he was mindlinking. A moment later, Ben bared his neck in submission. and I let him go. The crowd cheered and some pack members came to compliment me on my techniques and asked for extra training.  

“Did you have to take so long? Roden was going insane in my head” Danny whined

“I had to make a point” I replied and kissed his lips. “I am sorry, mate” I whispered in his ear and Caly purred to calm Roden down.

The next days and weeks went smoothly and we fell easily in our routine. Danny and I started leading the training in the morning after breakfast. I started a meditation group which wasn’t mandatory but most she-wolves joined us gladly. Ben and his goons were forced to join our meditation as well as the other pack members who seemed to show signs of aggression. In the evening, after dinner I was leading Capoeira and Silat classes which also consisted mostly of she-wolves and my pups. Caroline started leading kung-fu.

Our foursome proved to be a great team and our pups were inseparable. Danny and I worked together in increasing finances and improving the business. Nate and Cary made us associates.

Selene’s condition is still the same. We noticed more letters from the prophecy revealing but nothing made sense yet. Her vitals were ok and her body was in great condition.

The elder who was leading the missions in the past came to us a couple of months after we joined back the pack and we filled him in about Selene’s condition and he wanted to see her. As soon as he went inside the room and his gaze landed on the Goddess, he shifted and his wolf laid next to her protectively whimpering softly and licking her face. It was obvious that his wolf was in control, it was very odd because the elders were known to have a great connection with their wolves. They never lost control over their wolves because they were always in sync like their both souls were merged.

This scene made my heart drop. The wolf’s sadness was evident and we decided to let him stay as much as he needed. The elder came back to our office in the evening after dinner. He was quiet for a while and we let him collect his thoughts before he spoke.

“My name is Malakai Elsher and I am 215 years old. I was born an Alpha and led my pack for 38 years without a Luna because my fated mate died 2 months after I met her and she was pregnant with our pup. I was lost in anger and depression and my wolf was going feral but Selene summoned us in her realm and trained us and helped us heal our hearts. 

We never felt whole again and we weren't able to take a chosen mate so I trained my nephew to take over the pack and after I retired I became an elder at the age of 40. The youngest in history. Long story short, I led the elders and when our representative from the supernatural council died I took his place.” He looked at us and we were all with our mouths open. Elders never reveal their faces, names, age or past. It’s the law that protects them from bribing, blackmail, etc.

And here stood before us Malakai Elsher, 215 years old, looking no older than 30, telling us his own story. He sighed and his head dropped in his hands.

“I know what I am doing by telling you this. It is against everything I have believed so far but I need you to understand… Selene… her mortal form… My wolf recognized her as our mate. Our second chance mate… but her soul feels like our first fated mate…” it was obvious he had a hard time processing what was going on.

The door opened and our pups came in. Lorelei jumped in my lap, Jasmin in her daddy’s and Zane went to his mom. Lorelei looked at Malakai and c****d her neck. He still hasn’t noticed the kids or if he did he didn’t react. Lorelei went towards him slowly and touched his hands.

He lifted his head and looked at my daughter’s pretty face. His face was wet from his tears, we didn’t realize he was crying silently.

“Don’t be sad, Malakai. She will not leave you this time. Khonsu needs to come visit her to help her gain all her memories and after the prophecy is revealed she will be yours. She felt you earlier and her glow is changing.” Lorelei said in her little voice

“Lory, how did you know that man’s name? Were you all listening to our conversation?” Danny asked and Lorelei frowned, her eyes filling with tears

“No, daddy. I would never eavesdrop. I promised you when you told me it was a bad thing. I don’t like doing bad things” she sobbed.

Danny stood up and hugged her. His heart broke every time he saw tears in our girls’ eyes.

“I’m sorry, baby girl. I just wanted to understand how you knew this man’s name. No one knows it and he just told us that.” Danny explained

“I know everyone’s names, daddy. I know their name and their needs when I see them. My wolf helps me.”

“Your wolf?” we all said in unison, she is too young to have her wolf

“Yes. I met her in the beautiful meadow when we played together. She can’t speak to me yet but she is with me. Her name is Moon.” Lorelei explained

“My wolf is Elatha, she helps me too.” Jasmine said

“And mine is Mawu. He told me he is very strong and I need to train hard so I will be ready when it is time to shift. We all met our wolves there and they stayed with us. We can’t talk to them but they help us sometimes” Zane explained

“And who is Khonsu?” I asked remembering Lory mentioned that name

“My wolf” Malakai answered, his face holding a warm smile towards Lory. “Thank you little wolf.”

Then he stood up and straightened his clothes.

“Your pups are very special. Don’t let anyone know they got their wolves already and try to hide their special gifts. But don’t suppress it. You need to train them so they can develop and reach their potential.” he told us.

“Alpha, if you will allow me I will be coming as often as I can to spend time with my mate.” Malakai turned towards Nathaniel

“Of course, elder Malakai. Anything you need” Nate answered and bowed as a sign of respect.

“No, alpha, no need to call me by my title unless I am in my elder’s robe. I am standing before all of you now as a wolf who waited for their mate forever. Now I found her and she is in a coma and our future is uncertain as she is a f*****g goddess and I am a mere mortal.” he sighed deeply. “Also I will be coming here as a common wolf, a friend of yours maybe if you allow me? Most alphas don’t experience interactions with elders more than twice in their life and having one coming here weekly will raise questions and suspicions.”

“Malakai, you have done a lot for us these years and we all would be proud to call you a friend. Not only as a cover up. You are welcome to come as often as you need. We will prepare the room next to Selene’s for you, the rooms share a bathroom so it will give you easy access to your mate’s room”

After that we said our goodbyes and went to bed exhausted. 

“Wow” was all Danny could say

“I know, right? I knew our pups were special, but I didn’t expect them to be that special. I wonder what Jasmine’s abilities are…”

“I am not surprised about our girls, they came from you after all. I had a feeling they had abilities. They always knew things.” Danny said and kissed the temple of my head

“Then what got you wowed?” I giggled at his cheeziness.

“Malakai’s story. The guy lived almost 200 years without his mate. I can’t imagine living more than 2 days without you. Not after I know what it is like to be with you.” he said seriously

“You won’t have to find out” I lifted my head and kissed his lips.
