A few months later, while Georgia ate lunch one day at her supervisor's apartment, her supervisor, a 26-year-old man named Barnaby Conwyn, noticed the queasy look on Georgia's face with a hint of concern.
Georgia got up from the dining table, and she ran to the sink, where she vomited up everything she ate.
" Are you OK, Georgia? Perhaps you should take a day off next week and see the doctor. I guess you're pregnant."
Barnaby approached Georgia with long elegant strides, and helped Georgia sit back at the dining table.
" Pregnant, Barnaby? Why would I be pregnant? "
A confused look was visible on Georgia's face.
" I'm not a mind reader. But let me guess. Have you laid with a man before? Perhaps last year? "
The frankness and the sharpness of Barnaby's reply surprised Georgia. But Georgia admitted that Barnaby was right. She still hadn't forgotten the memory of what happened a year ago, but the past is past. She will face whatever the future and the present will throw at her from now on with a will of steel and fierce resolve.
" Yes, Barnaby. I lay with Levi at a party thrown by one of my ex-fiance's friends to celebrate his birthday last year. "
Georgia let out a sigh, and admitted candidly with Barnaby.
The story spilled forth from Georgia once again, with Barnaby listening intently until Georgia was finished.
" That was a foolish thing you did, Georgia. You threw away a marriage and a permanent position as COO and graphic designer for the start-up your fiancé created because of a kiss from Levi and a moan of pleasure. "
" I know, Barnaby. I haven't forgotten the past. But it's no use crying over spilled milk. "
Georgia said with newfound resolve, with a sharp edge of steel punctuating every word she said.
The next day, she took a leave of absence, saying that she had to go to the hospital for a pregnancy test.
She immediately went to One Medical, Downtown LA for a checkup with a doctor.
The young doctor on duty gave Georgia a checkup. When the results of the test arrived after a few minutes of waiting, the doctor confirmed Barnaby's suspicions that Georgia was pregnant. The baby was a girl.
Just as Georgia was about to leave the hospital, her android smartphone rang.
" Hello, Georgia. Any news? "
" Hello, Barnaby. You were right. I'm pregnant, and the doctor also confirmed that it's a girl. "
Then Georgia ended the phone call, and made the most of her unpaid leave.
She hailed a taxi back to her apartment in South Central, Los Angeles.
I will do all I can to make sure my baby is well provided, and give her a bright future.
Georgia thought as she put on fresh clothes after bathing. She needed to buy baby clothes, diapers, anything her baby will need in advance, while still in the early stages of her pregnancy.
Right after she finished dressing up, she placed her wallet in her sling bag, unplugged her smartphone from the power socket, removed the charger of the smartphone, and placed her smartphone in her sling bag.
She hailed a taxi to the department store, where she busied herself buying a crib, diapers, baby toys, baby clothes, everything her baby would need. After she finished paying for her purchases, she returned to her apartment, and sorted out the things she bought.
Barnaby arrived after his shift at work ended, to help Georgia set up the crib and prepare the baby's room.
Working hand in hand, they finished setting up the baby’s room, took a picture of the beautifully decorated baby's room, and uploaded it to social media.
Within a matter of a few seconds after uploading the picture on Twitter, i********: and f*******:, their post got inundated with millions of likes, shares, and comments.
" Look at the positive comments, and the number of shares, Georgia. That's incredible. "
Barnaby exclaimed in admiration.
" Yes. it is. But look at the negative comments of my ex-fiance. He still hasn't moved on from what happened in the past. "
Georgia chimed in, her tone becoming sharp as a blade.
Barnaby read the negative comment in silence.
Is he the CEO of Matrix Systems, a famous startup known for innovating in New York? The past is past, and I'm right. Ferdinand Darcey should just focus more on his company and not on me. I cut off contact with him a long time ago.
Georgia thought as she continued to look at Ferdinand's profile on f*******:. Then she put down her phone and reflected on her own achievements with pride.
She was one of the top graphic artists in the company who could also multitask and help the company bag multi-billion deals from potential clients. As a result, she was one of those top employees who had the biggest bonuses, and her salary was far larger than that of her under-performing counterparts in Digital Tech.
A few more months later, when Georgia's labor grew near, she was already in the onsite birthing center of the hospital, with Barnaby on hand to check in on Georgia from time to time.
After what seemed to be an eternity of labor, Georgia finally beamed in happiness when her baby was finally born.
After the umbilical cord to her baby was cut, the doctor and her assistants presented Georgia with her newborn baby.
Barnaby was ushered inside the birthing site.
" Congratulations on your newborn baby, Georgia. "
Barnaby quipped as he took a photo of Georgia holding her baby on his android smartphone.
" Have you decided on what to name her yet, Georgia? "
Barnaby asked Georgia.
" Yes, Barnaby. Her name is Annabeth. "
A few days later, Georgia returned to her apartment along with her newborn baby.
She hired a middle-aged nanny named Araminta Slater to look after her when the baby was already 6 months of age, so she could focus on her work, and provide a comfortable life for herself and for her daughter.
