4 years later, Georgia returned home from work. Her once vibrant and flourishing career as a Senior Graphic Designer for DigitalTech ended when the company was sold to a new owner.
All the employees of the company got paid triple their usual salary, aside from their benefits and separation pay after being terminated, including Georgia Lockheart.
Now I need to find a way to make a living for myself, and for my daughter. That's it. I will go to New York, and take my chances there.
Georgia thought as she climbed up the stairs to the front door of her apartment.
She opened the front door of her apartment with her spare key, and was met by the sight of Annabeth excitedly running toward her in excitement.
Georgia bent down to hug Annabeth, ruffled her hair, then got up again and straightened herself up.
Georgia placed her shoulder bag on the sofa, and let Annabeth approach her again.
Georgia lifted Annabeth off her feet, and Annabeth her around with glee, Annabeth's childish laughter ringing in her ears.
Georgia placed Annabeth down on the ground again, then bent down and allowed Annabeth to hug her.
" I missed you, mom. "
Annabeth said, with a broad smile beaming on her face, as Annabeth hugged Georgia.
" I missed you too, daughter. "
Georgia hugged Annabeth back.
Georgia let go of Annabeth, ruffled Annabeth's hair, then watched as Annabeth excitedly went to the living room to watch some cartoons.
Annabeth's nanny, Araminta Slater, approached Georgia.
" Hello, miss Georgia.''
" Hello, Araminta. Thanks for taking good care of Annabeth. I regret to say this, but your time with me has come to an end. I just got terminated from my job as senior graphic designer for Digital Tech. I'm flying back to New York tomorrow, and I'll be taking Annabeth along with me. "
Thanks for looking after Annabeth while I was busy with work. Without your help, I wouldn't have found a way to provide for myself and for Annabeth.
Georgia gave Araminta her separation pay, plus a fair compensation bonus as a gesture of goodwill.
Araminta accepted her separation pay and bonus, then walked out of the apartment.
Georgia went up to the living room, where Annabeth was engrossed with watching cartoons. Georgia took the remote, and shut off the television to get Annabeth's attention.
Georgia sat down on the sofa beside Annabeth.
" How were your final exams today, Annabeth? "
" I passed with flying colors, mom. I got an S+. "
Annabeth took out her exam papers and proudly showed them to Georgia.
" That's very good, Annabeth. I have something to say to you. "
Georgia looked at the exam papers, noting Annabeth's excitement at the fact that Georgia approved of Annabeth's high marks.
" What is it, mom? "
Annabeth looked at Georgia with interest.
“ We're flying to New York tomorrow. Do you know what that means? “
" Does it mean I can finally see dad in New York? "
" Look, Annabeth, we will meet your dad soon when we reach New York, OK? Now run along and pack your things. We have a flight to catch tomorrow. After packing your things, come down to the dining room so you can have dinner with me. "
Annabeth obediently ran off to her bedroom to pack up her things.
What I told you, Annabeth, was a white lie to protect you. I know who your father is. We haven't communicated with each other for a long time. Levi was a long-time friend of mine through Ferdinand Darcey. I don't know how Levi will react when he finds out he got me with a child that fateful night at the party.
Georgia thought to herself, as she went straight to the dining room to prepare their simple yet filling dinner of meatloaf, mac and cheese, broiled asparagus shoots and broccoli floating in heated butter spiced with finely ground black pepper and washed down with sweet blueberry shake.
As Georgia was about to start eating dinner, Annabeth, looking freshly washed and dressed, entered the dining room, and sat down on the foldable dining chair.
" What do we have for dinner, mom? "
Annabeth, ever the smart but mouthy and sharp-tongued kid, looked at the delicious food placed before her on the dining table.
Georgia just grinned at Annabeth, and motioned for Annabeth to help herself and eat.
" It seems you made an extra effort to make dinner special today, mom. All of my favorites are on the dining table. "
Annabeth remarked while helping herself to hearty portions of the dishes placed on the table.
After they finished eating and drinking, the dishes were washed and stacked neatly, and Annabeth was put to bed. Georgia went to her own bedroom.
While she sat down on the bed, her glance fell on the numerous plaques of recognition awarded to her by the DigitalTech CEO for being one of the top graphic designers in the company.
Her mind flashed back to the recollections of her hard work to secure Annabeth's future, and provide her and Annabeth with a good and affordable apartment to live in.
They had good food on the table, a nice roof over their heads, a place they could call home, and lived modest but comfortable lives.
Annabeth even became one of the best students in her school, with a nanny to see to her needs and wants.
Georgia knew it was made possible because of her hard work, and dedication to her work as a graphic designer for Digital Tech.
Her rise to become one of the best Senior Graphic Designers for Digital Tech was a typical story of hours of dedication, tears and sweat spent on honing her skills further.
She knew right from the start that the road ahead would be tough, and many detractors in the company would seek to use her and involve her in their senseless and time-consuming infighting, politicking, and idle gossip.
She steered clear of them, and instead focused on her main goal to be included among the best of the best in the industry, in order to make her life, and the life of Annabeth in turn, comfortable.
As time passed by, her results paid off.
She glanced again at the plaques of recognition with pride. She will return to New York, with Annabeth in tow, and replicate the same success she got in Los Angeles.
