There are moments when silence save more than words ever could.
after that meeting, after his warning and my defiance, the quiet in Alexander Vance office didn't feel calm it felt like tension waiting to break.
He had walked out, leaving me with nothing but the echo of his voice and the faint smell of rain on the air.and yet, hours later, my thoughts were still tangled around the same question:what was I doing?.
I had come to veloria to rebuild not to get lost in the gravity of a man who lived like he had swallowed his own shadows .
And yet,I couldn't deny it the way he looked at me wasn't just sharp it was searching like he was trying to solve me and hating that he couldn't.
by the time I left the building the city was already deep in night veloria towers glowed like blades against the sky and the streets shimmered with rain light I walked without direction swallowed by the rhythm of traffic.
I told myself to let it go to forget the flicker in his eyes, the way his voice had dropped when he said careful.
but the truth was I didn't want to forget.
I wanted to understand.
when I finally reached home my phone was waiting with another message from the agency.
"excellent progress.mr Vance has requested you remain on his personal detail for upcoming negotiation.
I should have been proud but instead a cold shiver round down my spine because I knew what that meant more time in his orbit more proximity to the storm.
I sat the phone down and stared out at the city somewhere out there he was probably doing the same standing at some glass window looking down at the world like it was his to command.
And maybe it was
but for the first time I wondered if he even knew had lonely power could be.
the next morning, the office was quieter than usual the staff avoided eye contacts everyone could sense something unspoken moving beneath the surface. when I entered Alexander office he was already there jacket off, sleeves rolled up focus sharp as glass.
"morning", miss Rivera, he said eyes not leaving the screen.
"Good morning "
Did you review the merger files I sent last night?
yes I replied but I made a few adjustment to the forecast model you might want to
"show me "
I moved beside him, scrolling through the figures on the screen he leaned closer to see,his cologne faint but unmistakable clean, cool and expensive my pulse betrayed me.
he noticed, I could see it in the slight twitch of his jaw the flicker of awareness he tried to bury.
when I finished, except back needing distance.
he studied the data then said quietly, "you are good at this".
"I have to be".
"no he said ,I sending mine you choose to be".
the word landed heavier than I expected because he was right I did choose it every sleepless night every long hour every wall I built around myself all of it had been my choice my survival .
but hearing it from him first like exposure
the room was too small, the air two thick I turn to leave but his voice stopped me.
"miss Rivera"
I froze.
there is a fine line between control and fear he said you work it better than most. I met his gaze and which side are you on Mr Vance?
a pause then with the faintest trace of something almost like regret, he said,"the one that keeps people out".
he turned back to his desk conversation over or maybe just pause. but as I walked away I realize something has shifted again. it wasn't just attraction anymore it wasn't curiosity it was recognition.
two people who had both lend how to survive by building walls now standing on either side of the same line. as sooner or later one of us was going to cross it.
