Chapter 4: The Sovereign's Demand

1161 Words
Lyra Point Of View Darius left the chamber to prepare his commanders, leaving me alone with the quiet hum of the ancient runes carved into the ceiling. I sat at the edge of the bed, staring at my reflection in the dark, polished stone mirror across the room. The woman looking back at me was unrecognizable. The hollow, terrified look of a hunted Omega had receded, replaced by something fiercer, anchored by the humming silver thread in my chest. Moonborn. I stared at my right hand. I closed my eyes, reaching past the fading ache of the silver burns, searching deep within my soul for that ember I had felt in the forest. Nyx, I called out silently into the dark void inside me. Are you there? A sudden burst of heat bloomed beneath my ribs. It wasn't painful but exciting. My skin prickled with goosebumps as tiny, violet sparks of lightning danced across my knuckles, crackling softly like static fire in the dim room. My wolf was awake. She was small, battered, and starved, but she was alive. The heavy oak doors clicked open, making me close my hands together, switching off the purple sparks instantly. A young female servant entered, carrying a silver tray with a pitcher of hot water, clean bandages, and a dress made of rich blue reinforced with leather around the corset. "High Luna," the girl murmured, bowing her head deeply. "Please, don't call me that," I said quickly, pushing myself off the bed. "My name is Lyra." "The High Alpha's bond-mark rests on your neck, Lady Lyra," she said gently, setting the tray on a table. "In Nightvale, that makes you our Luna. I am Elana. Alpha Darius ordered me to help you dress and tend to your wounds before the confrontation at the gate." "Confrontation?" My heart skipped a beat. "Is Kael already at the walls?" "He brought fifty Enforcers and the Dominion Herald," Elana replied, her hands working efficiently to wrap fresh bandages over my burns. "They are demanding an audience at the iron portcullis. Alpha Darius is riding out to meet them now." Panic flared in my chest. I couldn't hide in this room while Darius fought my battles. Kael had framed me, broken me, and hunted me for sport. If there was going to be a reckoning at the gates, I needed to stand there and look my accuser in the eye. "Help me put on the leather," I commanded, my voice firming up. "I'm going to the gate." Darius Point Of View The heavy iron door of Nightvale's outer gate hissed as it raised three feet off the frost-covered ground, just enough for me and my war council to ride through on heavy armored warhorses. Fifty yards away, across the snow-dusted clearing of the border valley, sat Alpha Kael and his Blackthorn vanguard. Behind him stood a tall figure covered in imperial red robes..Marquis Vane's herald, bearing the golden seal of the High Dominion. Kael looked magnificent to an untrained eye; clad in polished silver plate armor, his golden hair catching the weak winter sun, his jaw set in rigid arrogance. But my wolf saw right through him. He was tense, his posture stiff, his eyes moving nervously around the surrounding mountain ridges where my archers were cloaked in shadow. I steadied in my stallion thirty paces from his line. Marcus rode at my right hand, her hand casually resting on the head of her sword. "Alpha Darius!" the Dominion Herald bellowed, stepping forward with a parchment scroll. "By decree of the Sovereign Court, we demand the immediate surrender of the runaway Omega, Lyra of Blackthorn! She is charged with grand treason and the theft of a sacred Dominion-chartered artifact!" I didn't even glance at the Herald. My silver eyes stayed locked on Kael. "You brought fifty men to my border, Kael," I said, my voice carrying easily across the silent valley. "Last time your warriors crossed this line, I sent their heads back in a sack. Have you forgotten so quickly?" Kael's jaw clenched, his golden eyes flashing with suppressed rage. "This isn't a territorial dispute, Darius! That girl is my property. She was marked to me, she betrayed my pack, and she stole the Moonstone! Hand her over, or the High Dominion will brand Nightvale a rogue territory!" "She is not your property," a voice echoed from behind my line. Kael froze. The heavy oak side-gate opened, and Lyra stepped out onto the snow. She wore the dark indigo leather of a Nightvale warrior, her dark hair bound back in a tight braid, her pale skin contrasting sharply against the dark fabric. She didn't cower. She walked straight past my warhorse, stopping right at my side, her dark eyes burning into her former fiancé. "Lyra..." Kael gasped, his eyes dropping to her neck. His face drained of all color. The raw, jagged mark of his broken bond was gone. Instead, the silver crescent of Nightvale burned clearly on her throat, pulsing in rhythm with my own heartbeat. "You... you mated with this monster?" Kael hissed, his voice laced with pure, toxic disbelief. "You wolfless rat! You threw yourself at a beast just to escape your execution?" "I didn't throw myself anywhere, Kael," Lyra said, her voice clear, cold, and echoing across the valley. "The Moon Goddess chose my true mate. And unlike you, he doesn't need to lie, frame an innocent woman, or hide behind silver chains to hold power." "Insolent stray!" Sylvan shouted from Kael's side, spurring her horse forward. "You stole the Moonstone from my chambers! Admit your crime before the Herald!" Lyra turned her gaze to Sylvan. A dangerous, eerie stillness settled over her. "I took nothing from you, Sylvan," Lyra said softly. She slowly raised her right hand, pulling off her leather glove. "You wanted to know why the Moonstone vanished from its case?" Lyra lifted her palm toward the sky. "It didn't vanish. Its core returned to its rightful bloodline." A deafening crackle of thunder split the clear winter sky. Before Kael or his Enforcers could draw their weapons, a blinding pillar of violet elemental fire erupted from Lyra's open palm, shooting fifty feet into the air. The sheer heat hit the Blackthorn ranks like a physical wall, instantly vaporizing the snow for twenty yards around her and sending Kael's warhorses screaming into a rear panic. The Herald fell backward into the dirt, staring at the violet flame in absolute terror. "Moonborn..." he whispered, his voice trembling. "The royal fire..." Lyra lowered her hand, the purple flames swirling around her fingers like living serpents before sinking back beneath her skin. She stepped toward Kael, her dark eyes glowing with liquid violet light. "I am no thief, Kael," she growled, her voice lacing with the roar of her awakened wolf. "And if you ever step onto my mate's land again... I won't just burn your chains. I will burn your pack to ash!"
