Never Have I Ever

*Monroe's POV* He grins at me again and then leads us past the pool to a spot on the grass where a bunch of lawn chairs sit in a circle. My eyes are somehow instantly drawn to Cade. He is already watching me and the look in his eyes sends an involuntary shiver down my spine. It should be illegal to look that good in a black t-shirt. I tear my eyes away and take a seat beside Xander and Charlie and Maddy take the two seats to my left. I look around the circle. The only people I recognize are Xander, Cade and the two called Jason and Brett from PE. There are 3 girls and 2 guys that I don’t know also in the circle.  Xander claps and asks, “Does everyone have a full drink?” Everyone nods and he says, “Perfect! We’re about to play a game called ‘Never Have I Ever.’ The rules are simple: we all take turns saying something we haven’t done, and anyone who has done that thing takes a drink. Everyone got it?” We all nod again and he says, “Great, I’ll start! Never have I ever given a blow job.” All the girls groan. That was a cheap shot. We all drink except Charlie.  “Alright, Monroe, you’re up,” Xander says with a smile. I look at him with a mischievous grin and say, “Never Have I ever received a blow job.” I can’t help but feel smug as all the guys take a drink and Xander says, “Alright I suppose I deserved that one.” Next up is Charlie. She thinks hard for a minute before saying, “Never have I ever lived in a state other than California.” I’m the only one that drinks and I look at her and jokingly say, “Wow, Charlie, shots fired! Are you trying to get me drunk?”  She only lets out a laugh in reply. Maddy says, “Never have I ever gotten a tattoo.” Xander, Cade, Jason, Brett and I all take a drink. I see Maddy give Charlie a conspiratorial grin and now I’m convinced they’re trying to get me drunk. We continue to go through the circle and most of the questions are very s****l. I have to drink for almost every single one. So I was a bit reckless when I was 16, sue me. I can’t help but notice the look that flashes through Cade’s eyes every time he sees me take a drink, even though he drinks for almost every single one too. After a couple rounds, our drinks are mostly empty and people are running out of things to say so Xander suggests we all get a refill and then come back out and play a different game. The 5 people I don’t know say they’re gonna go off and mingle, so that leaves the three of us and Xander’ group, which makes me a bit nervous for some reason.  We decide that it’ll be easier just to send two people in to get everyone’s drinks instead of trying to push 7 people through the crowd. I volunteer, and Xander volunteers Cade. Of course. We grab the empty cups and head inside in awkward silence. Once we reach the kitchen, we start to fill up the cups and Cade turns to me and says, “So, it seems you’ve got quite the adventurous history.” I glare at him and say, “Seems you do too.” He clenches his jaw and then shifts uncomfortably before sighing and saying, “Sorry. I don’t know why I said that.” He runs his fingers through his hair and I’m a bit taken aback by his honesty. “It’s okay,” I reply. He looks down at me and says, “You wanna do a shot with me before we go back?” I nod and he grabs the bottle of tequila. “This okay?” he asks. It’s not my first choice, but I won’t tell him that so I just nod. He pours the shots out and hands me one. He knocks his cup against mine and then we both shoot back the liquor. It takes a significant amount of effort, but I manage to keep my face neutral. I see him trying to hide the surprise in his eyes as a smile plays at the corners of his lips. He then says, “I’m impressed. Also, you look really good tonight.” My heart skips a beat at his words but he looks away before I can reply, tucking a bottle of vodka under his arm before grabbing the 4 solo cups he filled up. I grab my 3 and follow him outside.
