Episode 15 – The Almost Confession

1834 Words
The morning after the festival felt strangely quiet. ‎ ‎Too quiet. ‎ ‎Mia opened one eye slowly, staring at the ceiling. For once, nothing had fallen on her. No books. No cat. No random disaster. ‎ ‎“That’s suspicious,” she muttered. ‎ ‎Mr. Whiskers blinked at her from the corner of the bed. ‎ ‎“You feel it too, right?” Mia whispered. “Calm before the storm.” ‎ ‎Her phone buzzed. ‎ ‎She flinched. ‎ ‎Storm confirmed. ‎ ‎Carla’s name flashed across the screen. ‎ ‎“MIA!” Carla screamed through the phone. “Emergency meeting! Relationship crisis level ten!” ‎ ‎Mia sat up so fast she almost fell off the bed. ‎ ‎“What happened? Did I trip again? Did someone post the cupcake disaster video?” ‎ ‎“No!” Carla said dramatically. “Worse. Ethan and Daniel are both planning to confess.” ‎ ‎Silence. ‎ ‎Mia blinked. ‎ ‎“…What?” ‎ ‎“Yes,” Carla whispered. “Today.” ‎ ‎Mia’s brain shut down. ‎ ‎Her heart? Racing. ‎ ‎Her hands? Sweating. ‎ ‎Her soul? Leaving her body. ‎ ‎“No,” Mia said calmly. ‎ ‎“Yes.” ‎ ‎“No.” ‎ ‎“Yes.” ‎ ‎Mia fell back onto her pillow. ‎ ‎“I’m transferring schools.” ‎ ‎ ‎--- ‎ ‎Hallway Tension ‎ ‎Harmony High felt different that morning. ‎ ‎Students were buzzing. Whispering. ‎ ‎And when Mia stepped inside, it was like invisible cameras turned toward her. ‎ ‎She swallowed. ‎ ‎Ethan stood near her locker. ‎ ‎Daniel stood near the window. ‎ ‎Of course they did. ‎ ‎“Morning,” Ethan said softly. ‎ ‎“Morning,” Daniel said smoothly. ‎ ‎Mia froze between them like a malfunctioning robot. ‎ ‎“Hi,” she squeaked. ‎ ‎Carla stood behind her whispering, “This is it. This is the episode.” ‎ ‎Mia glared at her. ‎ ‎Ethan stepped closer. “Can we talk later?” ‎ ‎Daniel immediately crossed his arms. “I also need to talk.” ‎ ‎Mia blinked rapidly. ‎ ‎Two boys. ‎ ‎Two confessions. ‎ ‎One fragile heart. ‎ ‎“Can we… survive first period?” she asked weakly. ‎ ‎ ‎--- ‎ ‎First Period: Anxiety Level 100 ‎ ‎Mia tried to focus in math class. ‎ ‎She failed. ‎ ‎The teacher’s voice turned into background noise. ‎ ‎All she could think about was: ‎ ‎What if Ethan confesses? ‎ ‎What if Daniel confesses? ‎ ‎What if they both confess at the same time? ‎ ‎She imagined dramatic music. ‎ ‎She imagined fainting. ‎ ‎She imagined tripping into a desk. ‎ ‎Very possible. ‎ ‎Her pencil snapped in half. ‎ ‎“Great,” she muttered. ‎ ‎Ethan, sitting beside her, noticed immediately. ‎ ‎“You okay?” he whispered. ‎ ‎She nodded too fast. ‎ ‎Across the room, Daniel was watching. ‎ ‎Of course he was. ‎ ‎Mia dropped her eraser. ‎ ‎Ethan bent down to pick it up at the same time she did. ‎ ‎Their heads bumped. ‎ ‎“OW.” ‎ ‎They both laughed awkwardly. ‎ ‎Daniel’s jaw tightened slightly. ‎ ‎The tension in the room was thicker than the cafeteria pudding. ‎ ‎ ‎--- ‎ ‎Lunch: The Battlefield ‎ ‎Mia walked into the cafeteria like it was a war zone. ‎ ‎Carla saluted her. ‎ ‎“Soldier. Be brave.” ‎ ‎“I don’t want to be brave,” Mia whispered. ‎ ‎Ethan approached first. ‎ ‎“Can we talk after school? At the park?” ‎ ‎Her heart skipped. ‎ ‎“Okay,” she said softly. ‎ ‎Daniel appeared seconds later. ‎ ‎“Actually, Mia, I was hoping to speak with you after school. Privately.” ‎ ‎The air froze. ‎ ‎Ethan and Daniel looked at each other. ‎ ‎Not friendly. ‎ ‎Not playful. ‎ ‎Competitive. ‎ ‎Mia felt like a trophy in a tournament she never signed up for. ‎ ‎Carla whispered, “This is better than television.” ‎ ‎“Stop enjoying this,” Mia hissed. ‎ ‎Daniel smirked slightly. “You choose the time.” ‎ ‎Ethan didn’t smile. “Yeah. You choose.” ‎ ‎Two gazes. ‎ ‎Focused on her. ‎ ‎Mia grabbed her juice box. ‎ ‎It slipped. ‎ ‎Juice exploded everywhere. ‎ ‎Silence. ‎ ‎Then— ‎ ‎Carla burst out laughing. ‎ ‎Ethan grabbed napkins quickly. ‎ ‎Daniel handed her tissues. ‎ ‎Mia wanted to evaporate. ‎ ‎“Why,” she whispered to the universe, “am I like this?” ‎ ‎ ‎--- ‎ ‎After School: Decision Time ‎ ‎The final bell rang. ‎ ‎Her heartbeat felt louder than the hallway noise. ‎ ‎Carla squeezed her shoulders. “Who first?” ‎ ‎Mia inhaled deeply. ‎ ‎“Ethan.” ‎ ‎Carla gasped dramatically. ‎ ‎“Go,” she said. “I’ll monitor Daniel.” ‎ ‎“Monitor?” ‎ ‎“Yes. Emotionally.” ‎ ‎Mia didn’t ask. ‎ ‎She walked toward the park. ‎ ‎Each step felt heavy. ‎ ‎Ethan was already there, sitting on a bench under the big oak tree. ‎ ‎He stood when he saw her. ‎ ‎“You came,” he said softly. ‎ ‎She nodded. ‎ ‎They stood in silence for a moment. ‎ ‎Birds chirped. ‎ ‎Wind moved gently through the leaves. ‎ ‎It was… peaceful. ‎ ‎For once. ‎ ‎“I’ll just say it,” Ethan began, running a hand through his hair. ‎ ‎Mia’s heart pounded violently. ‎ ‎“I’ve liked you for a long time,” he said. ‎ ‎The world stopped. ‎ ‎No juice explosions. ‎ ‎No falling. ‎ ‎No chaos. ‎ ‎Just his voice. ‎ ‎“You’re clumsy,” he continued with a small smile. “You’re chaotic. You trip over air. You drop everything.” ‎ ‎She blinked. ‎ ‎“But you’re real,” he said softly. “You’re honest. You laugh at yourself. And you make every day interesting.” ‎ ‎Her throat tightened. ‎ ‎“I like you, Mia.” ‎ ‎Silence. ‎ ‎Wind. ‎ ‎Heartbeat. ‎ ‎Her brain short-circuited. ‎ ‎“Oh,” she whispered intelligently. ‎ ‎He chuckled. ‎ ‎“You don’t have to answer now.” ‎ ‎Relief flooded her body. ‎ ‎“I just needed you to know.” ‎ ‎She nodded slowly. ‎ ‎Before she could respond— ‎ ‎Footsteps. ‎ ‎Daniel. ‎ ‎Of course. ‎ ‎He stopped when he saw them. ‎ ‎His expression shifted. ‎ ‎But he didn’t leave. ‎ ‎“I guess it’s my turn,” he said quietly. ‎ ‎Mia’s anxiety returned at full power. ‎ ‎Ethan stepped aside but stayed. ‎ ‎Daniel walked closer. ‎ ‎He wasn’t smirking now. ‎ ‎He wasn’t teasing. ‎ ‎He looked serious. ‎ ‎“I don’t like losing,” Daniel began honestly. “You know that.” ‎ ‎Mia nodded. ‎ ‎“But this isn’t about winning,” he said. “You’re different around me. You argue back. You don’t fall for my charm.” ‎ ‎She crossed her arms slightly. “Is that a compliment?” ‎ ‎“Yes,” he said. ‎ ‎That surprised her. ‎ ‎“I like you,” Daniel continued. “Not because you’re easy. But because you’re not.” ‎ ‎Her chest felt tight. ‎ ‎Two confessions. ‎ ‎Back to back. ‎ ‎Same park. ‎ ‎Same sunset. ‎ ‎Same overwhelmed girl. ‎ ‎Silence filled the space between the three of them. ‎ ‎Mia looked at Ethan. ‎ ‎Then Daniel. ‎ ‎Then the ground. ‎ ‎Her mind was spinning. ‎ ‎“I… I don’t know,” she admitted honestly. ‎ ‎Neither boy spoke. ‎ ‎“I care about both of you,” she continued softly. “But I need time.” ‎ ‎Ethan nodded immediately. ‎ ‎Daniel exhaled slowly. ‎ ‎“That’s fair,” he said. ‎ ‎The tension shifted. ‎ ‎Not gone. ‎ ‎But calmer. ‎ ‎ ‎--- ‎ ‎The Almost Disaster ‎ ‎As Mia turned to leave— ‎ ‎Her foot caught on a tree root. ‎ ‎Of course. ‎ ‎She fell forward— ‎ ‎And both boys grabbed her at the same time. ‎ ‎One holding her arm. ‎ ‎The other her waist. ‎ ‎They froze. ‎ ‎So did she. ‎ ‎This was not helping. ‎ ‎She laughed nervously. ‎ ‎“I can’t even have a serious moment without falling.” ‎ ‎Ethan smiled. ‎ ‎Daniel shook his head slightly, amused. ‎ ‎“You’re impossible,” he said quietly. ‎ ‎“Tell me something I don’t know,” she replied. ‎ ‎They released her slowly. ‎ ‎The air felt lighter. ‎ ‎But complicated. ‎ ‎ ‎--- ‎ ‎Night Thoughts ‎ ‎That night, Mia lay in bed staring at the ceiling. ‎ ‎Two confessions. ‎ ‎Two different kinds of feelings. ‎ ‎Ethan felt safe. ‎ ‎Daniel felt intense. ‎ ‎Her phone buzzed. ‎ ‎Ethan: Take your time. I meant what I said. ‎ ‎Daniel: I’m not giving up. ‎ ‎Her heart did another dramatic flip. ‎ ‎Carla texted: YOU ARE THE MAIN CHARACTER. ‎ ‎Mia covered her face with a pillow. ‎ ‎She wasn’t ready to choose. ‎ ‎She wasn’t ready to hurt anyone. ‎ ‎But for the first time— ‎ ‎The chaos didn’t feel embarrassing. ‎ ‎It felt important. ‎ ‎Real. ‎ ‎Messy. ‎ ‎Complicated. ‎ ‎Like her heart was growing. ‎ ‎She closed her eyes slowly. ‎ ‎“Tomorrow,” she whispered. ‎ ‎Because tomorrow would bring more tension. ‎ ‎More teasing. ‎ ‎More feelings. ‎ ‎And probably more falling. ‎ ‎But maybe— ‎ ‎Just maybe— ‎ ‎She was ready for it. ‎
